I’ve been considering ideas for a third character. I might make them a teacher? I just like seeing what characters everyone else has added so I can make someone interesting!

Also, if people would like to talk about character friendships, I’d love to discuss that! Especially for Theo, as the 2nd and 3rd Year students would know each other at least a bit. I think it would be fun to get some ideas down.

@supremenerd42 If you'd like to make a teacher, that would be great!
I'm hoping to get at least two or three more teachers and two or three more students to round out the cast of characters nicely before we start.

@Spiritstar3 - got it, I'll add your characters to the list when I'm back on my laptop.

Mildred Fong - Winter Student

Postby selasphorys » Fri Jan 03, 2025 4:07 pm

Mildred Fong | 68 | Female | 1st Year Winter Student
Pronouns: she/her
Sexuality: Heterosexual (happily married)
Appearance:
At just 4’ 9” (and a half, don’t forget that), Mildred is a tiny woman. She wasn’t much taller in her prime. She has a honey-colored complexion with warm brown eyes. Her salt-and-pepper hair is pinned into a short, feathery bob. Mildred has a round face and build, with a crinkly smile and many years of laugh lines. She has come to accept the wrinkles and white hair as products of time. Though she’s a little old lady, Mildred still has a sprightly energy to her steps. She attributes this to her morning walks and Tai Chi, as well as the social dancing lessons she took with her husband on weekends. While not in uniform, she wears a rumpled, purple cardigan embroidered with phoenixes of gold and silver thread. She insists on putting on brightly-colored crocheted mittens, scarf, and hat while practicing cryokinesis, muttering something about catching a cold.

Personality:
Mildred is a cheerful lady, treating each day with a can-do attitude. She tries to find wonder in the little things, holding onto little bits of light in otherwise dull days. She makes the best of things. A nurturing soul, she will take anyone under her wing. She cares for others but tends to neglect herself. Mildred loves to keep herself busy, helping out when needed and butting in when not. She’s always ready to offer advice and wry remarks. As a student, Mildred is meticulous and industrious. She generally follows rules, tradition, and authority. She often gets lost in the details when she devotes herself to her studies. Her status as a non-traditional student makes her timid in class. Mildred struggles to keep up with the others, but she refuses to seek help. She would rather put on a brave face, studying alone under the light of the moon.

Bio:
As long as she could remember, Mildred centered her life around family. She showed her love through duty. Though she was fascinated with the moon and magic as a child, she listened to her parents’ wishes to study something more practical. Mildred went to university, became an accountant, and soon started a family of her own. As she raised three kids, she forgot all about her childish dreams. Rushing home from work, getting food on the table, helping with school projects— she fell into routine. Mildred hardly knew who she was anymore. But even then, there was something wistful in the back of her mind. A pull toward the window and the open sky beyond. In the cover of the night, Mildred slipped out a beginner’s book on magical theory. She would steal a few hours of study a week, with only the moon for company as she sat alone at the kitchen table. This nightly study sparked her first interest in lunar magic.

After the kids left the nest on paths of their own, she finally felt ready to do something more. She was running out of time. With retirement came the chance to live a dream. She dove into her studies, sent out applications to every magic school she even had a chance at. Out of a sea of rejections came an invitation from Featherwick. Her first attempt was met with failure as she floundered in the Trials. The second year, after much preparation, she finally made it. She lulled a cicada to sleep in the Dome, steeled herself to cross the Bridge. An old granny with a bad knee would never make it past the Chase, but she survived with a clever bit of trickery. She cast an illusion of a person about to reach the boarding area, and as the last stragglers gave up, she walked through the illusion and took the final space. If tackling an old lady was fair, this would surely be allowed, right?

Mildred came to Featherwick to realize a dream from long ago, to reach out her hand and grasp the stars that were once out of reach. She doesn’t have high expectations of becoming a master spellcaster. She can’t even see herself as comparable to the bright-eyed young students who had studied magical theory their whole lives. All she wants is to one day crochet a blanket that will chase away bad dreams and insomnia for all who use it. The blanket would always smell of home, whatever that meant to you. An illusion, yes, but a kind one.

Other:
- of Cantonese descent
- speaks fluent Cantonese and Mandarin
- enjoys knitting, crochet, and embroidery
- struggles with cryokinesis and transmutation

Peregrine Corliss - Potions Tutor

Postby selasphorys » Fri Jan 03, 2025 4:10 pm

Peregrine Corliss | 32 | Male | Tutor of Potions
Pronouns: he/him
Sexuality: Bisexual
Appearance:
Peregrine stands at 5’ 11”. Though narrowly built, his slender limbs are deceptively strong from years of adventure. He has a pale complexion, with light freckles scattered over his tall nose. His dark auburn hair is cut short and smoothed with a neat side part. Like the falcon he was named for, his dark brown eyes watch the world with a sharp, intelligent gaze. But more often than not, a warm smile graces his face and lightens the seriousness of his appearance. Peregrine’s arrival is signaled by the soft scents of tea and spice that follow him like a trail. Covered in tiny pockets, his chestnut vest holds a hundred vials with various potions and antidotes. He keeps these within reach at all times in case of an emergency. Under the vest he wears a simple white dress shirt and caramel slacks. Outside of the classroom, he dresses smartly with a gray wool coat over his other clothes.

Personality:
Peregrine has a gentle, subdued presence. Softspoken, he prefers to express himself through actions rather than words. But he can be very clear and direct, particularly when he has a goal. Peregrine has a deep fascination for obscure beverages and rare ingredients. Those who know him well know his steady resolve, a quiet determination that sees him through to the end. A devoted teacher, his students are his whole world. He watches over them with a focused, attentive gaze, protecting them from fumes and explosions with magical barriers. With an eye for the overlooked, Perry finds himself drawn toward the uncertain and unfortunate. He won’t hesitate to reach out to those who need a friend. His strongest quality is his loyalty to his loved ones. He will go to any lengths to keep them safe, throw himself in any harm’s way.

Bio:
Peregrine comes from a long line of potion-makers. His mother had a little cafe by the seaside– Ambrosia's Elixirs— where you could find the best potions (and tea and coffee) in town. Perry grew up helping around the shop, greeting visitors and learning to cook with his mum. He would travel the world with his dad searching for quality ingredients for her to brew her special teas with. Perry found himself drawn less toward cooking ingredients and more toward medicinal ones. Once he came of age, he studied potion-making and spell casting with his mother before researching curative alchemy on his own. He applied to Featherwick and passed the trials, joining the summer track. Peregrine became a master of temperature control for brewing highly specific potions.

After graduation, he spent many years as a hospital potion-maker. But something drew him back to Featherwick. As much as he enjoyed creating new cures, he found greater fulfillment in training new potion-makers and watching them grow confident in their work. Peregrine is now on his third year as Potions tutor at Featherwick. He’s still new and figuring out his teaching style, often bouncing between overly serious and overly fun modes of teaching. His office is always open for students to come in for help. He offers a wide assortment of refreshments to anyone who enters, made fresh with his cafe training.

Other:
- of British descent
- has an old cat named Princess Cobweb, who currently lives with his sister. dotes on her, will show pictures to anyone who asks

I'm so excited to be a part of this!

I'd love to talk about relations for my characters.
Mildred is a 1st year Winter student. She would be happy to befriend any of the other first-years, and be a grandmother figure for anyone who needs it.
Peregrine is the Potions Tutor. He would hold office hours for any students who have a particular interest in Potions or who need extra help with Potions. He is open for any kind of relationship with the other faculty members.

@Consulting_Angel
I could see Peregrine and Astoria having tea together and trading pastry recipes! They could maybe be friends? Peregrine would have looked up to Astoria as a teaching mentor while he adjusted to his new position. Does the greenhouse or garden have a dedicated area for growing potion ingredients? They might have to discuss that together periodically. Peregrine would always want to bring in medicinal plants from faraway regions, plants that might be difficult to maintain.

I also had some quick world building questions. How are spells generally cast? Do they involve an incantation and a hand gesture? Is there a specific term for a potion-maker, like an alchemist or potioneer? Is there also regular chemistry outside of potions? How much is magic seen in daily life for people without sorcery jobs? How modern is the technology in this world?

@Spiritstar3
Mildred might see Genn as a sort of mentor in the Winter track? They're both older students (though Mildred is much older), so she might have questions for him about his experiences with starting university a little later in life. She also had a lot of trouble with ice magic, but since he is a third year who excels in it, he could maybe help her with learning it?

She could definitely be a grandmother figure towards the two siblings I made, if you’d want. And my other girl.

I’m absolutely okay with that. He likes to help others, so he’d help her.

@selasphorys - First, I love that idea with Astoria and Peregrine being friends and perhaps Astoria being something of a mentor towards him while he settled into his new role.
I would say yes, that both the greenhouse and the gardens would have sections for potion ingredients - possibly both sections cordoned off (by magical means, of course) to students, particularly if some are especially dangerous or otherwise rare/expensive.

- Spells are generally cast via incantation and sometimes a hand gesture. Some spells are more complicated or require certain ingredients (hence Ritual Magic classes) or involve drawing runes, usually on specific materials, and then an incantation (hence Runic Magic classes). Basically, spells can be cast via a variety of means. Many Spellcasters find it easier or prefer one method over others.
- I hadn't thought of specific terms for potion-makers. Potioneer possibly makes more sense than Alchemist though.
- Regular Chemistry would not be a particular class at Featherwick, but is taught as part of regular curriculum in schools and non-magic colleges/universities. Perhaps regular chemistry concepts are part of what's covered during Potions classes, though, to ensure students have a refreshed understanding of it?
- Magic in daily life is not particularly common, but it's not unheard of. For example, hospitals have both non-magic and Spellcaster staff, though do have different departments for patients, depending if their reason for being at the hospital was a result of magic or not. Magic is not necessarily a cure-all, so science and technology is still a big part of research and life - particularly as there are far more people that don't use magic than there are that do, since it is a very difficult thing to learn.
- Technology in this world is as up to date as it is for us.

Re: Spellcasters - Discussion & Forms

Name: Lucien "Luc" Lefevre | 24 | Male | 2nd Year Spring Student
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: Homosexual
Appearance: Luc is a tall, lean individual with naturally tousled light brown hair, often looking effortlessly stylish, as if he just rolled out of bed and into a fashion magazine. His green eyes are striking, and his sun-kissed skin contrasts beautifully with his lighter clothing, usually a mix of pastel colors and floral patterns. His Spring uniform looks relaxed yet carefully put together, with a few personal touches—a necklace, a wristband—subtle reminders of his personal style.

Personality: Luc is outgoing, charismatic, and seemingly carefree, with a natural flair for making friends. He thrives in social settings. However, while he may seem easygoing and confident, Luc is actually very perceptive and deeply thoughtful. He can sense when people are struggling or hiding something, and he’s quick to offer a smile or a compliment. He has a gentle way of coaxing people out of their shells, without ever pushing them too far.

Luc speaks with a charming French accent, often slipping into French when he’s excited or frustrated, which can be both endearing and confusing to those around him. Despite his open nature, Luc keeps a part of himself hidden, though not out of any sense of shame—he simply believes some things are meant to remain personal.

Bio: Luc was born and raised in France, in a small village just outside of Paris. His family is rich in history, and he comes from a long line of spellcasters, particularly skilled in charms and enchantments.

Though Luc speaks openly about his background and loves to share stories from his travels, he’s a bit more reserved about his personal life. His relationship with his family is somewhat strained, with his parents pressuring him to follow certain paths that he’s not sure he wants. He hides this conflict behind his easygoing demeanor.

Other: Luc often drops French phrases into his speech, especially when speaking to someone he feels close to or comfortable with. His French is incredibly fluid, and he doesn’t always notice when people don’t understand. Some of his favorite expressions include “C’est la vie!” (That’s life!) and “Tu es très spécial pour moi.” (You’re very special to me). His warm demeanor and open nature mean he tends to have a lot of friends.
