i doubt that a bunch of people just dreamed that this happened and think that it's real, so i decided to come here and ask!

so the question, if anyone is able to answer:
are all pets of the same rarity equal, or at least use the same calculation or ratio or whatever, regardless of the year? aka. is it true that a 2024 rare is close in numbers to a 2010 rare?

thank you for your time!

On the technical level, with the math and everything done every month, the short answer is yes. A rare is a rare and an OMGSR is an OMGSR. Pets in inactive accounts are not taken into consideration with the math, so someone who hasnt been on in say, 8 years with a hoard of 200 ER pets isnt going to be counted in what that pets actual rarity is (if that makes any sense).

However, the long answer is that rarity is a completely different number than value. What do I mean by this? Well, rarity is calculated using math. A bunch of statistics in a spread sheet basically (it isnt actually, but its an apt analogy). Value is a user created system. This is basically the non and ma system that currently exists. These pets, which although have the same rarity as any other, have a different user assigned value because of x reason. It could be the design, the artist who made the pet, or any number of other reasons.

So say you have a Purple Sleipnir. Thats currently an Extremely Rare pet based on rarity math. Say you also have the 2010 New Years dog, which is also an Extremely Rare based on rarity math. These two pets are theoretically the same when you just look at rarity. But, when you factor in the other variable of Value, they are very very different pets with very very different worth's. Now this worth may vary player to player, but it is no longer just a statistic.

tldr: yes and no. There are two variables: Rarity and Value. The math when it all is taken into account turns from Rarity=Worth into Rarity+Value=Worth. Let me know if you'd like clarification on any of this id be happy to dive more into it!
(Also, its so so very important to stress this fact: Rarity is what staff control. This is how many of a certain outcome will grow when adopted. Value is a purely user made phenomenon. Staff have no say whatsoever in it.)

Very interesting.... So as an example if the total players in a month is 20,000 and 500 of that pet are born in that month that pet should be some type of rare and if 20,000 of a pet were born several years ago and 500 are still in circulation it would be the same type of rare? Is it truly a straight math equation based upon current number of active players and current number of active pets? Thanks! So by this thinking a current rare could be worth more than an older rare based upon the percentage of new players that take a break from playing versus the percentage of longer term players that take a break from playing?
Special Thanks to Teskeria - Who got my collection started with an awesome gift of pets.

Rarities have certain thresholds, and when a pet crosses that threshold, either on the high end or low end, that is when we see a rarity change. Two pets with the same rarity label could be sitting on completely opposite ends of that label. We can assume that pets with the same rarity label are similar in value, but they are not exactly the same in value.

We have no way of knowing whether a 2010 rare is rarer than a 2024 rare if we're strictly talking about how many copies of each pet exist, because we don't know what end of the rarity label that 2024 pet fell on when it was released. In my opinion (as a long-time player, not as a staff member), you would have to wait and see which pet turns VR (or EU) first to actually know which one was truly rarer. Speaking purely mathematically doesn't take into consideration value or demand, though, which are factors that are driven by the community.

To anyone:
Can old URs still be released during dec 18th?

I just got to thinking about it as I was thinking about maybe auctioning stuff at some point, which eventually led to if it was possible to get a copy of the UR I already got.

Yes, URs get rereleased - the only pets we don't rerelease are store pets. ^^

To anyone:
What do you think is the most rare pet in the game? I'm not sure if there is an exact answer or if it is more subjective due to demand~

Hmm well knowing what I know about pets, I'd have to say probably one of the store pets from 2009. Back then, the userbase was so small, and people probably didnt buy a ton of them. Due to the fact that store pets cannot be re-released on dec 18th, their rarity can really only go up due to users either quitting or forgetting the site, or people deleting the pet. Though this is my own personal opinion, as I don't have the numbers to back it up lol
