That's called chromatography and just remember to use water based markers if you dip it in water (If you use alcohol based markers, such as permanent markers, you need to dip them in alcohol to see the effect) ^.^
You can use other colors too, most markers are comprised of multiple dyes so it's super cool to see the different colors emerge :D
It's a super fun experiment anybody can do at home with very little planning. Also a very kid friendly experiment with fun colors and no dangers involved, highly recommend!
But anyway, nerdy science fun aside:
