Kal walked briskly through the hallways back toward the front door, wanting to get out of this place as soon as possible. She felt mixed emotions. Anger, confusion, a sense of betrayal, guilt... she had indeed caused a scene, and as usual, she hadn't thought before she acted, and now they all probably thought her a spoiled brat. But how was she supposed to react, with news sprung on her like that? Still, her father's words rang through her mind, and she let a growl escape as she tried to shake them off.
It wasn't that she had a problem with the idea itself. If she thought about it from a peacemaking point of view, it probably would bring the two species closer or at the very least stop all the fighting. But why hadn't anyone asked her what she wanted? What if she didn't want to be married?
As she emerged outside, a breeze hit her face and she let out a breath. Perhaps she could talk with her father and they could work something else out. Although... he was pretty stubborn when he wanted to be.
"Kal!" Kai's voice broke through her thoughts and she turned to see them pushing through the entrance. Her eyes narrowed.
"Did Father send you to get me?" she asked, irritated. "Because if so-"
Kai interrupted her. "No, I came to find you myself." They sighed wearily and walked over to their carriage still waiting, motioning for Kal to join them.
"Did you know?" Kal asked as they climbed in. She settled down near the back of the carriage and Kai sat down next to her, resting their head on her shoulder. After a moment of silence, Kai responded with, "Yes, I did. I would have told you but dad said not to."
Kal stared at her hands. "Why does he tell you everything and leaves me out? I mean, if I'm the one being betrothed, shouldn't I know beforehand?"
Kai's eyes darkened. "He doesn't tell me everything," they muttered, so low Kal almost couldn't hear. In a louder voice, they added, "He was afraid you'd refuse to come if you knew."
Kal opened her mouth to protest but closed it after realizing she probably would have. She would have hid, so they couldn't find her, or something. Still, it made her wonder what else he was keeping from her. Normally she wouldn't care. But now, especially seeing as she would suddenly have to learn to be responsible, she felt completely put off.
Kai listened to their sister take breaths in and out. They were silent, allowing her a few moments to gather her thoughts. After a minute or two, they straightened up and leaned against the seat, turning their eyes to her.
"Do you want to go back?" they asked. Kal kept her gaze on her hands, not answering. Kai put a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Kal," they said.
Kal shook her head and sighed, moving her gaze to study Kai's face. "Fine," she murmured. "Fine. I'll go along with this. I already knew I wouldn't be able to live my own life forever."
She stood up and moved past them to exit the carriage. Kai watched her go with a resigned expression. She was going to accept it, just like that? Kai would have thought she would resist more. They were already prepared to offer some counter ideas in case Jurdan agreed to call it off.
Pushing their hair our of their face, they got up and followed their sister out of the carriage and back into the building. Kal walked stiffly, and when Kai glanced at her face, they saw a definite forced smile. As they reached the door to the meeting room, Kal paused, seeming suddenly unsure. In an impulse, Kai wrapped their arms around her in a hug, surprising her and themself. It was rare for them to give hugs, and in fact the last one Kal had received from them was nearly nine years ago. She leaned into their embrace for a moment before Kai let go and offered a dim smile, then pushed open the door once more.
(sorry that ran a bit long xD)
