I'm a player from 2014 that ended up losing my account in 2022 due to an email change and figured I could get into the game again last year. I've been pretty inactive aside from events or making art for cs currency but I've still been lurking a lot of places. If I remember correctly, there was a similar thread a few years back like this one and despite it getting so much traction, there wasn't much done as a result. I believe that's what started the mid month updates, but we didn't even get that this month and last month it was more.. late that mid of the month.

I could talk about this site for a long long time but I'll try to sum it up. I'm incredibly disappointed that Tess and Nick are, at this point, ignoring the site. They refuse to make quality of life updates but also won't pass the ownership to someone else. I've seen the excuse "there's only one coder" many many times and yet iirc, Tess and Nick have said they refuse to hire more coders, even volunteers. I mean, as far as I saw, the only admin or higer response on this thread was from Seasonal, and that comment didn't even address the post's topic, just clearing up some side questions. It's really concerning that even the admins, the ones probably the closest to Tess and Nick, have nothing to say. At this point, I'm just left wondering if Tess and Nick are leaving the site to die on purpose or not. I understand that this was a smaller project that Tess started way back when but if they want to move on then surely they should give the site over to someone else more capable, right? Or at least just say they don't want to keep updating it?

Even reading the first post makes me incredibly sad because it just seems so unfair. Over a decade for a simple qol change. Tess and Nick have an entire community loyal to CS and they can't even give us quality of life updates. I feel like the pound update was nice but it's one of the many many many many suggestions that people have supported over the years so it almost makes me feel worse, knowing that these updates could happen and they just haven't been.

I agree with a lot of what you've said here. The current moderation/artist team seems very passionate and I really appreciate all that they do to keep CS running behind the scenes. They are the ones who show up in these threads and try to listen to the community but are ultimately unable to do anything. Pretty much anything outside of forum moderation are changes only Tess and Nick can implement and they are either too busy with their own lives or simply not interested in actively running CS anymore. It does seem like Nick is a bit more engaged and has been doing some great updates recently, but these things are really a decade+ overdue...

the cynical part of me thinks it will stay this way until CS stops passively making income, in which it will then be shut down ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

your points on tess & nick are also something i've thought of as well. to me it seems like they just leave the site as is with minimal effort to still bring in income. i think if they weren't making money, the site would have been closed or sold as it's very old.

at this point i don't even know who would buy cs if they sell it, nor what it would cost. i have not put money into the site since 2015 and i would encourage others to do the same. it's not like anyone else is really getting paid besides tess or nick...and it's not like you're paying for the site to get better or have updates.

i don't like to think that way but with the way the site's been running all these years i'm starting to believe it more and more.

this post puts my thoughts into words so much better than i ever could.
it genuinely baffles me how old some suggestions are and - while i understand not everything can be implemented - there is little to no acknowledgment from staff of these very old, very clearly supported suggestions.

if tess and nick want to continue to reap whatever rewards they receive from ad and c$ revenue while still being AWOL then that to me isn't really an issue - they made the site. but it should NOT be that difficult to at the very least find a capable coder who will work for free in their downtime - their refusal to find one is astounding to me. this site has countless users, if you want someone who is passionate enough to work for free - since clearly people are passionate enough for that, given the admin positions are all volunteer - then you can definitely find an already existing user to do some work. the blatant refusal to search for another coder just does not help tess and nick's cases of seemingly letting the site go to the wayside until it is no longer financially viable.

so i support. genuinely, get cs up to the 21st century. there are people here who love this site enough to help with that.

I wonder if boycotting the CS store would help at all. Would they notice a sudden dip in income and actually come back to fix things? I genuinely wonder if that’s the main/only motive nowadays, especially because aside from the recent pound and rarity update, a lot of updates have been quiet fixes to cultural issues (which I’m glad they fixed!!) But it just seems like they approve of things that could impact site traction on a more political level because those have real life consequences. Idk about you guys but I don’t personally feel like the approval of those updates is done in good faith, it feels like they just pop in to do just enough of the serious problems so we quiet down, then ignore the rest because they don’t care anymore. At least that’s how it feels. Maybe Nick and Tess have too much IRL going on to handle, which is totally justified!! But at least say that? Say something?? I feel like we’ve all been abandoned and are rebuilding what we can of society on our own with what little we have 😅

HOWEVER, I could be completely ignorant to how some of these updates work!! The most recent update was a change to item names and designs. Do admin outside of Nick and Tess have access to and authority to change those? If not, I reiterate my point… But otherwise PLEASE correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions! I don’t wanna spread any false negativity…

from what i understand within a few other suggestions that mods have posted to, small edits like that are something that admins like simon are able to approve and implement without insight/help from nick or tess - because they have the ability to change things like that themselves. (i'm like 80% sure of that though so if i'm wrong staff can correct me.) i will say though i believe the changes to cultural items are in good faith - they do take into consideration what those from said cultures think of the item(s), and seem to act accordingly. i don't think there really could be much bad faith in that if they're taking the criticism from folks within these cultures. i just wish they would speak to people from different cultures BEFORE making cultural items, instead of after. i mean, cs literally has an international board. utilize it. but i digress, that isn't what this thread is about. (perhaps a suggestion could be made about that issue as well, if it doesn't already exist.)

as for boycotting: while i personally think it's something that could work, i would think it'd be shut down by mods pretty quickly if it were organized here or end up having warnings put up around site if it were organized offline - since something like that could probably get out of hand fast. if it were something that could realistically be organized, especially because i would think most people buying c$ are in the older teen/adult age range, it would probably at least catch someone's attention. so who knows - if mods would be alright with cs users organizing something like that within reason, it could very well be worth a try.

Ohhhh Okay thank you so much for explaining that to me!! I feel so much better about it now and can agree then with what you said. It’s hard to know what is and isn’t controlled by who so I just assumed it all had to go through and be approved by Tess and Nick first so it just felt weird, but knowing that’s probably one of the few things admin can do makes me feel a lot better about things!

Also you make a good point, I could see that being a problem. I had seen someone somewhere else mention something like that and I keep thinking about it because it just makes me sad that it feels like the site is being left to dwindle away. I love it here so much, which is why I get a little heated sometimes talking about it 😅

Re: Suggestion: About suggestions and general CS QoL

Postby Clayflower. » Sat Sep 21, 2024 6:12 pm

i agree with a "boycott" but would maybe call it like a peaceful protest!

i don't think it would violate any rules as long as it's kept respectful; and i think it's something that would maybe help get some answers as no staff have really commented on the points that have been brought up. only cleared some bits of misinformation.

i've voiced my opinion that people should not be putting money into c$ sales whatsoever as it has not improved the site, only maintained it. and while i've loved cs for years, i've grown up with it but the site has yet to do so as well. if there's a chance at an impactful response from the decrease of c$ sales i am all for it. having a thread with a respectful, clear, and concise message with some links to suggestions like these as to why a peaceful protest is happening sounds like a good way to help promote this change :] it's something i would link in my signature for sure.

edit to add: i saw a FANTASTIC suggestion (so sorry cannot remember your user but ily) that said to skip next year's summer event and instead give staff & owners time to update the site. i would LOVE having this agenda pushed or more people support/think about it in general!
