drought basilisks

Postby tawnycatz » Mon Aug 12, 2024 5:40 pm

(is this a reference?)

An incredibly common species on Kannuar, and a primary food source. Drought basilisks are ambush predators that live in every desert region on the planet, and come in any variety of colors, so long as it matches the sand they grew up in. They bury themselves in the sand and wait for food to walk close before attacking. Thankfully, they aren't very dangerous to travelers. Also they taste spicy because they eat poison, so they are definitely dangerous to eat if you don't have a tolerance for it (if you, say, aren't a Kannuar-ian. Kannuarist? Kannuarian? Kannuaran?)

While colors vary, most are rather plain in terms of coloration. They look like generic tan sand, with no markings, though there are rare reports of some with a possible spotting pattern (this has never been verified).

There are four notable color variants found only in a few specific regions.

Kassur, with its pale sand, has drought basilisks that are nearly white.
Kolnavh, being mostly old, dark volcanic rock, has a black landscape. As such, the drought basilisks there are the only ones with dark coloration. Technically dark brown, though they appear black.
Karrym drought basilisks have a distinctive gold hue. As many drought basilisks can take on similar colors to it, the Karrym variant is of note due to (and can be identified by) its orange-hued fin webbing and surprisingly bright yellow eyes. This variant is commonly mistaken for sun basilisks.
Kurruas drought basilisks have a reddish-brown undertone rarely seen in the drought species. These are also sometimes mistaken for sun basilisks due to their unusual coloration.
