It's a silly thing to be worried about, Kirill knows. Of course Kiprey wouldn't start hating him overnight. But the young tom's growing desire for independence worried Kirill. He wouldn't let Kirill groom his fur anymore, and would always shoo him away if his friends were near. Kirill had raised Kiprey himself, joining the clan was... challenging. For Kirill, anyways. Kiprey was assigned a mentor and Kirill was assigned warrior duties, and suddenly they had less time together. They even slept in different dens!

Kirill really had begun to wonder if Kiprey had outgrown him when the little tom came scampering up to him one day, fresh from a hunting patrol. He had a massive duck held in his jaws, and slowed none as he raced to Kirill and thunked his head into his brother's chest.

"Look at this!" Kiprey had beamed. "Idalia said it's the biggest duck she's ever seen!"

"It's the biggest one I've seen too." Kirill still remembers the way his chest ached from Kiprey's over-excited headbutt. He had tried so hard not to wheeze as he praised the little tom. "You should take it to the fresh kill pile."

Kiprey shook his head. "I want to share it with you! Please? It's been forever!"

Kirill blinked. "Would not you want to share it with your friends? It could feed all of you."

Kirpey shook his head again. "Nope! Sit down. Tell me all about being warrior! Is it..."

Kiprey had talked his ear off the entire time they ate, only pausing to listen to him with rapt attention. Kiprey's friends called him away just before they were finished, and though Kiprey had run at their call, he came back moments later to bump his head against Kirill's.

"Promise we can talk again tomorrow?"

Kirill smiled. "I promise."

Maybe this was a good thing. Kiprey was able to grow in the clan, really find himself. And maybe, just maybe, Kirill would be able to as well .

Nobody could know.

A secret no other cat could learn. If this got out Syrinx could be cast out from the Kingdom, her home.

Syrinx had befriended a dragon. Befriended one of the massive monsters. For the sake of her safety nobody could know. It was forbidden to even interact with the creatures, let alone befriend one.

Why had she even done it? Syrinx had known the consequences long before, yet, she had done it. It was a secret that haunted her day to day life, knowing that if they royals found out she would be banished. The dragon had welcomed her, though, its wings spread wide. She wasn't sure why, but the creature had protected her during a dark night when she had gotten lost.

She had been foolish and young, unaware of the mistake she was making by allowing this dragon to shelter her. Syrinx could still remember how it looked, a striking ruby red. Its eyes had been the size of her face, teeth the length of her leg. There were days where she wondered how the beast was doing, if it was still alive.

It wasn't like she would be able to learn anyways, if a single cat found out that was it for her. Despite how much she yearned to learn, Syrinx knew the risk wasn't worth it.

Nobody could know.

She always adored adding a whisk of nature to her clothes, from the ones she wore to the ones she sold. Whimsical, ethereal, elegant, Liya had always been popular with her outfits.

From vests to dresses, Liya wore and created everything. Despite the delicate appearance she was known for, her style was always functional.

For all of her ethereal and whimsical aesthetic, she adored running and feeling the wind. Not that many cats would get to know that, for the focus was on her clothes.

He'd pressed his face into her fur with a purr of thanks and vanished into the night, never to be seen again. She'd returned home without a word and the next day he had not bothered to correct anyone when they jumped to far more sinister conclusions. It was safer for his brother if the Clan believed him dead and Owlfoot was more than happy to enable their family to believe that.

As an apprentice she gained some independence, but never managed to break her habit of talking to herself. Much to her mother's chagrin, Owlpaw showed incredible fighting aptitude and took to fighting like a fish to water. She loved it and the more she learned the more that love grew.

I got in a fight with a biiiig beast - nearly tall as the lowest branch on the 'Tree with dark beady eyes and jaws so big they could've finished you in one bite. Yeah. Massive. Barely escaped with my life. And -

Oh, wait. A rogue trying to sneak into camp? When'd I tell you that? Well why'd you ask if you already had an answer?

Well most cats don't ask twice and I can't exactly keep track of everything I've told everyone, heh, that'd be impossible.

Why? Because making up stories is fun. Trust me kid no one asks those kind of questions just to hear an answer like 'Oh well an owl tried to nab me as a kit and I was lucky enough it didn't drop me far enough to do any real damage.' Nah that's not fun or interesting! People want a story! So I give 'em what they want. Sprinkle in a little peril, add a dash of daring, and you get 'em looking at you with those big sparkly eyes like you're the coolest creature they've ever seen and for just a moment you can see they believe in heroes and legends. Although the fang on her necklace may be tiny... it's quite deadly. Well, not anymore, as she boasts.

They were on a regular hunting patrol when she came across a baby rattlesnake that strayed from its nest.

She dropped her fresh kill out of surprise, frozen in utter shock. However, they remembered the stories from the elders and the warnings from the medicine cat to never cross a rattlesnake -- especially a baby. In fact, the babies haven't yet learned to control the amount of venom they produce with each bite.

At the thought of this notion, Stardust watched the rattlesnake carefully. Finally noticing the cat in front of it, the baby reared its head up, fangs glistening in the rising early morning sun.

The cat sprung into action before the snake could strike. She leapt over the baby, her back paw narrowly missing a fang, and they landed squarely on top, their front paws smashing the snake's head into the ground. The tail rattled furiously, finally finding its naturally evolved voice, but it was too late.

With a mixture of claws and teeth, Stardust swiftly dispatched the baby rattlesnake. Though shaky and nervous, she gazed at her kill with immense pride. No one else in the Syndicate had killed a baby before without a scratch on them! As a token of her adventure, she carefully removed the fang from the baby rattlesnake...

Well, actually, they asked the medicine cat to do it for her -- but semantics, right?

It wasn't war that split her clan. At least, not yet. Asya's world has been divided; it feels like her paws are on two sides of the world, pulled at all sides by feuding loved ones. And Asya... she barely looks at Spruce anymore. She didn't mean to hurt her. (50 Words)

Larch's pendant is not a fang or claw, but a thorn. However, it is no ordinary thorn. Small, thin, and shining with a golden luster, this thorn was plucked from the very body of a tree spirit. This thorn was a gift to his family long ago for an act of trust and kindness; the forest where Larch grew up was lush and vibrant thanks to the verdant aura of the tree spirit, however it was not always so. When Larch's grandfather first discovered the forest, it had just suffered a terrible wildfire, leaving the spirit weak and depressed.

Larch's grandfather talked with the spirit at length. The spirit knew its power would return and the forest would regrow, but the creatures within it could not. These creatures whom the spirit had grown to love would starve and leave, or had died already in the fire. What was the point? Why grow if ruin could come so totally and suddenly?

Larch's grandfather was not so disheartened. Being mortal, he understood more of death than the tree spirit, and knew that life was meant to be lived in spite of it. He had seen many friends and family members spend so much of their precious short life crushed by grief, and couldn't bare to see an immortal spend their long one stuck in such a way.

So, he moved into the forest.

He would pester the spirit endlessly, either telling it about his day or asking it to play with him. He would tell the spirit of each new sapling he found, every patch of herbs, every family of mice. When more cats began to trickle into the forest, Larch started a family of his own, and this time the spirit had the energy to ask to meet them. Larch showed the spirit the joy of life - festivals, births, peaceful moments spent in the sun or under the stars - and showed it how even his merry group thrived in a place scourged by death. Larch looked upon immortal, unknowable grief and offered himself as a shoulder to cry on.

When the forest was green anew and Larch's grandfather beginning to gray, the spirit offered him the thorn. It had neglected its duties for long enough, it explained. Larch's grandfather would never see it again, but it would never forget his and his family's kindness. The thorn would mark them as friends to spirits, and even those that left the tree spirit's domain would be protected so long as a descendant of Larch's grandfather wore it.

Larch's mother wore it before him. And now, as the gnashing iron teeth of man's monsters bring death to what was once immortal, the precious symbol of friendship hangs around Larch's neck as he leads his family away from the forest they refused to abandon so long ago. (472 words)
