Long story short, Earp used to be with the Reckless Riders. They weren't really lawful, but they didn't commit awful crimes or anything, just stuff like thievery. One member of the group was wanted, and the reward for turning him in was something Earp wanted, so he snitched. The group obviously didn't like that, but Earp fled and ended up in the town we're all visiting. He became the sheriff, the Reckless Riders found him, he fled, and then we caught him.

I was just thinking about how sad it was we hadn’t gotten any guinea pigs this year, and I went to check the archives for guinea pigs and it said this was a guinea pig?? I thought for sure that it was a Syrian hamster T-T
HOW is it a guinea pig!?

I'm not sure I like how that story was told. Dodge claims that they never hurt anyone, but even if they only stole stuff, it's not a victimless crime. they could be a reason for many people to fall into poverty even. it's very "reckless" to say such a thing, but I'm more concerned that the narration let it slip without any comment. people will learn that stealing is fine, because they do not physically harm anyone.

I mean, the story never actually says that they steal or anything like that. Dodge just said that he can't confirm that the riders have never broken a law.

To quote it directly:

"All of us are estranged from our families, for one reason or another. Some of them are lookin' for us, accusin' us of crimes we didn't commit to get our names and faces on wanted posters in towns across the West. Not that we ain't never committed a crime by the letter of the law, but we don't hurt no one. It's hard livin' out here, and we take care of our own."

Of course it's coming from an unreliable narrator so you can't necessarily take him at his word lol, but I think that's the point. This is a western, vigilante justice and a lack of proper law enforcement is a common theme

In love with this year's event - the detailed storyline with dodge? SO GOOD. I tip my hat to the author; I adore all of the cliches and traditional western-isms that have been spun into it!

also totally in heaven with all of the coyote pets.

this summer vacation is striking me right in my childhood western-loving heart!!

You're correct, it is on the Syrian hamster lines, this is just a mistake! I've let the archivist know ^^ you can report any archives mistakes you see here :)

just because it is a common theme, it doesn't mean we, as modern people, shouldn't critique it. all I would like is narration pointing out that all crimes hurt someone (for example in a line like "you thought blah blah blah about what Dodge said"). instead we'll be lost in a "good criminal" stereotype and it's harmful.
