he ironborn uprising, though. as his father
and elder brothers had perished in the fig
hting, it fell on arion, the only survivor of
the direct karstark line, to inherit karhold
as its lord. all of this, he would have been
fine with, even the heavy losses of his ow
n family, had he ena westerling by his sid
e as he'd always wished. alas, it seems th
at, too, was doomed to only ever be a dr
eam.

little more than a year ago arion was at his
peak, surrounded by his loved ones in karho
ld and ever thinking of his beloved in the w
esterlands, who he was to marry soon. for
one as high on cloud nine as him, there was
really only one way to go: down. he just ca
n't wrap his head around it: he did his duty
when the ironborn rebelled without hesitat
ion, and yet what did he get for fighting on
the so-called side of justice? nothing but an
empty keep and a fancy new title. since the
n, he's become serious and sarcastic, with a
morbid sense of humor. he tends to behave
like a chameleon, simply parroting how he
expects others want him to act - for exam
ple, acting loyal to the north when he does
not give a fig about their call for independe
nce. there's a deep-rooted anger in his he
art, one that cannot be quenched by anythi
ng. most noticeably, he has given up on his
faith, turning his back on the old gods as t
hey have clearly turned their backs on him.
let the others be angry that rhaello burned
the godswood, he doesn't care. he also doe
sn't care who sits the iron throne, but supp
orting rhaello seems to be the surest way to
seeing fire and blood upon the land. for a m
an who no longer cares. for anything, that d
oesn't really sound all that bad, does it?

Cosette is what la noblesse call le nouveau riche - rather than being born into luxury
her family's wealth accumulated over the years. For most of her life, Cosette reside
d at the heart of Paris, comfortable in her family's abode in the cleaner part of the
city, juxtaposed to the quays of La Seine herself. Her father is an artisan, a talente
d jeweler whose works attracted even la bourgeoisie. Since Cosette was his firstb
orn, she was taught basic arithmetic and bookkeeping skills to help around the st
ore, as well as how to read and write, but she never got a formal education other
wise - something that, while typical of lower class women, embarrasses her never
theless. She also has a younger brother, Thaddeus, who was less interested in tak
ing over the family business and eventually became a gendarme instead. Due to his
unrivaled skills in the craft, her father eventually amassed a respectable fortune.
His jewelry has even earned the attention of the Purcells themselves, who are am
ong his wealthiest customers.

As someone who wasn't born into wealth, unlike no doubt some of the party attend
ees, Cosette is used to having to work hard to make a living, and as a result she ha
rbors a secret, pent-up resentment against la noblesse - those who were lucky enou
gh to be born into the right family. While she would never dare to say such things al
oud, she is of the mind that most who are wealthy are sheltered and self-absorbed.
Despite that, she plans to make the best impression possible at the party, since it's
the first opportunity she's ever really been given to ingratiate herself among them.
In a way, you could definitely argue that she is a social climber and an opportunist;
more of a pragmatist than a romantic, she would be perfectly content to marry in
to a wealthy family given the opportunity, and she has no unrealistic expectations
of meeting the 'one' and falling hopelessly in love, thank you very much. Despite h
er flaws, she is determined and willful, above all wanting what is best for her fami
ly. While she doesn't pride herself in her bookishness, she possesses a sense of str
eet-smarts and is a tad manipulative, something which she admits freely. Overall,
she conveys herself as classy, proud, and confident, though the truth is she alrea
dy feels like an outsider looking in. Despite the bravado she tries to convey, it's c
ompletely fake; she has a severe case of imposter's syndrome, fearing that every
one will be able to see right through her facade. Even so, she would never let on
that she feels that way except to her closest companions!

Leif is the only son, the only child even, of a distinguished, wealthy family from Mas
sachusetts, and the Devitts have always had a prominent, upstanding role in the sm
all city he grew up in, donating large sums of money to public projects and funding
Harvard University, the alma mater of many of Leif's relatives (in no small part tha
nks to their reputation and donations; nepotism at its finest). His parents had trou
ble conceiving for some time and he was regarded as their miracle baby, and beca
use he was an only child, he grew up being spoiled and doted on by everyone, born
with a silver spoon in hand and never wanting for anything - though it also meant h
e missed out on rich social interactions that he could have had with siblings. His fa
mily is old money, descending from England before the Revolutionary War, but in re
cent times they have maintained their wealth largely in the same way that the Pur
cells have, by owning numerous companies that have flourished in booming industri
es. Despite that, Leif has never had an interest in taking over the family business.
He would much rather continue to enjoy his life as it is now, free of responsibility.
Unsurprisingly, he attended Harvard for his collegiate years, indulging in parties a
nd sports during his time there and overall becoming close friends with many of hi
s peers; one such friend is Charles Purcell, and they've kept in contact since gradu
ation. It perhaps comes as no surprise, then, that he was invited to the party, give
n his ongoing friendship with Charles, and he is excited to make a scene there!

From the outset, Leif tends to give off the impression of being a carefree, overly
familiar, smooth-talking cad. He goes through life with a very devil-may-care atti
tude, to the chagrin of his parents, and it's not a lie to say that he is irresponsible
and lackadaisical. One need look no further than to his own family business, for e
ven though he is the only scion of the Devitts, he has never once displayed any int
erest or ambition in bettering their prospects. Because he was overindulged grow
ing up, he often does whatever he wants without first considering the consequenc
es of his actions. Truly, he doesn't mean to seem so thoughtless or immature, it's j
ust that he's never really had to take a step back to observe how he affects others.
Having learned the phrase "carpe diem" from his professors at Harvard, he's pretty
much adopted that as his new life philosophy (though his parents hate it) and gen
uinely does not want to live life with any regrets. Despite his many flaws, Leif is
friendly, talkative, and a faithful friend once you actually get to know him. He is
naturally compassionate and empathetic toward others, and always tries to inclu
de everyone. Despite his wealth and family, he doesn't look down on those worse
off than himself, and he is always willing to lend a helping hand to those who ne
ed it. Of note, he loves to flirt with the ladies, but he always genuinely means
his compliments and doesn't have any ulterior motives when he does so; he simpl
y feels validated when he manages to brighten someone's day, you could say he
gets a sense of self-satisfaction out of it, and that's why he always compliments
others. Overall, though he's sheltered, he's trying his best in his own way.

succeed his father and take the iron throne one day, with all the
pomp and circumstance that came with being prince of dragonst
one. though he never became a dragonrider (having never bond
ed with the last dragon), he was a warrior prince nevertheless,
which his father encouraged. following his father's death of illne
ss, daegon took the iron throne and married lady alaena, daught
er of his old friend, the lord of the tides, aethan velaryon. their
s was a good marriage by most standards, & she gave him 3 child
ren - aegnar, rhaegon, & vaeserys (+ open to more!), aegnar mak
ing daegon especially proud as a dragonrider, claiming the last dr
agon vortigern for himself. during the early years of his reign, da
egon earned a reputation through his military accomplishments,
putting down small rebellions and chasing pirates away from wes
terosi shores (with the help of the greyjoy & velaryon fleets), bu
t he never seemed satisfied - as many courtiers put it, peacetim
e bored him. eventually, daegon turned his attention to destroyi
ng the hill tribes of the vale, seeing them as unnecessary & unci
vilized. he was never successful in this, and these skirmishes ult
imately led to the deaths of his sons & heirs (also leaving vortig
ern riderless until the dragon's death), which the queen consort
blamed him for to the end of her days. nowadays, many attribu
te daegon's growing anger to the deaths of his family, as he con
tinues to stew over his losses - whether due to a wounded ego
or genuine grief, no one can say for sure.

daegon was always characterized by his warrior's disposition, focusing more
on knighthood ideals of valor and courage in battle than politics and diplom
acy, which he tried to instill into his sons (to the disapproval of his queen).
yet, as ill-fitting as he seems for royalty, daegon has a natural charisma, de
manding and commanding respect wherever he goes, and he works hard for
his goals with a resilient determination that is unmatched. during his early
reign, daegon genuinely meant well and did what he thought was best for t
he realm, and he tried to be a good husband and father, fostering a good re
lationship with his wife and his eldest sons. still, once daegon gets an idea
in his head, he is nigh impossible to convince into changing his mind, owin
g to his incredible obstinacy, & one of his greatest flaws is his never-endin
g ambition and desire for more power (as if that was even possible) - it's no
secret that he would try to invade essos if he thought he could get away w/
it! in this way, daegon is never satisfied with himself, which is one of the ex
act reasons he courted war. while he is certainly accountable for the early
deaths of his sons (queen alaena always warning him they took after him t
oo much and were too young for battle), daegon himself refuses to admit
his faults, instead choosing to stew over his losses like a wounded animal,
his heart becoming more and more frozen with each death. nowadays, th
e prince of the past is gone, his dreams of glory and conquest forgotten i
n favor of an uncanny desire for vengeance (on who and what? nobody re
ally knows), and in his place is a dragon king with a fierce, vicious, and vo
latile temperament that scares most of his court away, leading him to be
unapproachable to all. daegon is even distant to what remains of his fam
ily, all the while ironically (or unironically) respecting the memories of hi
s lost loved ones.

kamui has spent years as an Enforcer and it shows in his cold, c
alculating, ruthless, and ultimately independent personality. th
ough his lone wolf mentality alienates others completely, kamui
could care less - he has always been an isolated person and the
people he has met thus far have never given him cause to trust
anyone but himself. besides which, his occupation demands he
be able to think and act for himself in high-stress situations, so
he is used to working alone and he sees emotions as a sign of w
eakness, thus he always wears a pleasantly fake smile on his fa
ce which never meets his eyes, always maintaining his composu
re even in tense situations. an almost complete foil to his serva
nt, the perfect picture of chivalry, kamui is perfectly willing to
disregard the wellbeing & feelings of others in his pursuit of his
goals. albeit callous, his success rate in his missions speaks for i
tself. indeed, kamui strongly believes in what he calls brutal eff
iciency. like a spoiled child, he has been protected from impuni
ty thus far by the Mage's Association, so he cares little for any a
nd all consequences of his actions. in return, he offers the Asso
ciaton his complete loyalty... as far as they know. in reality, ka
mui is mostly walking down the path he sees in front of him, a
nd the Mage's Association is such an integral part of his life tha
t he does not know where he would go or who he would be wit
hout them, even if he suspects their role in the demises of his
parents (who he hardly remembers for one thing, for another h
e couldn't act against the Mage's Association anyway, though th
e thought they lied by omission to him certainly rankles). howe
ver, this is not a two-way street by any means, and kamui is pe
rfectly aware of that, hence he realizes the importance of winn
ing this war - his life is on the line here, and losing is not an opt
ion he can afford. as for what he would wish for if he actually e
merged victorious and obtained the grail? he couldn't tell you.

specs: mystic eyes of death perception, rainbow designation. so r
are that many consider this mere folklore, kamui's eyes, granted s
o because of his familiarity with 'death', give him the ability to per
cieve death by seeing what mages call lines of death which are nor
mally invisible. like the fates who control life and death by cutting
lifestrings, cutting these points of death severs its entity's existenc
e instantly - a painless end. suiting its rainbow designation, the hig
hest noble color which can be granted, these eyes cannot be stopp
ed even by blinding the user's vision permanently or temporarily, th
ey would still be able to see these lines of death. the eyes are limit
ed only by their scope - those lines which kamui cannot cut, he can
not sever - and, of course, mystic eye killers.
servant: saber (true name: arthur pendragon).
saber's known weaknesses: dragonslayers, mordred. by the holy g
rail war's nature, it is unlikely for mordred, a saber-class servant, t
o be summoned alongside arthur, another saber, so this is moot.
equipment: avalon, sheath of excalibur, granting its bearer, in th
is case kamui, protection from all wounds. its power derives from
saber's magical energy, so kamui must be within a certain proximi
tyof his servant, but his wounds heal on their own as long as he is
the vessel of avalon, making it virtually impossible to defeat him
in close combat.

unlike many of the recurring participants in the holy grail wars, kamui doe
sn't hail from a noble family - in fact, there is nothing particular about his
pedigree at all, and he normally would never have gotten to this point as a
magus if not for the event that sparked both his greatest gift and his curse,
the mystic eyes of death perception. see, for whatever reason, kamui's pa
rents had gotten themselves marked by the Mage's Association. to this day,
kamui has yet to discover why his parents drew the ire of the Association -
his recollection of his early childhood, especially his family, is all a distant
memory now which he has no use for - whether one of them had a Sealing
Designation or defected from the Association, but regardless the family wa
s targeted by freelancers and bounty hunters which they evaded over the y
ears, until they didn't. the night kamui lost his parents, he nearly lost his o
wn life as well, and kamui lapsed into a coma for months afterwards, linge
ring between life and death. there are very clear reasons why the Mage's A
ssociation designated the mystic eyes of death perception as one of the fe
w types of mystic eyes worth the rainbow color: the scope of its ability, to
act as an arbiter that controls life at its user's whims, land its immense rar
ity, to the point it is considered folk legend in most circles. after all, the a
cquisition of these mystic eyes is earned through "experiencing death", in
no better words, and surviving it. when kamui did so and awoke from his c
oma, he found himself seeing the world in a new light. literally.
when news of the peculiar magus's unknown eye affliction arrived at the M
age's Association, they were quick to act and recruited kamui, who had no
place to go, into their rankings. under their guardianship, kamui was raise
d alongside other mages, many of which originated from noble families an
d none which he got along with since he was, in their eyes, the country bu
mpkin. it was through the Association that kamui learned what his eyes we
re and the power they held, and he soon rose in ranking to become one of
the Mage's Association's top Enforcers and mage hunters, ruthlessly bringin
g divine punishment to rogue mages - after all, if you were not with the M
age's Association, then you were against them - while they cleaned up afte
r him. Now, as a literal mage hunter and one of the top associates of the o
rganization, it is perhaps no surprise that Kamui was chosen as its represe
ntative for the upcoming holy grail war, and it was through his contacts th
at he obtained Avalon as his summon catalyst which all but guaranteed he
would summon a powerful servant of arthurian origin... only to end up wi
th the king of knights himself! a worthy ally, and one kamui fully intends
to utilize to his advantage. the war may seem dangerous to some, but to
kamui it's all part of the same game he's been playing for years, just with
higher stakes, and he fully intends to claim his victory.

as far as candidates go for the holy grail war, leliana is woefully un
derprepared. while most prominent magus families prepare and tr
ain their children all their life for such an event, leliana only recei
ved her family's magic crest and started training her magical abilit
ies four years ago, after the death of her sister. having lived w/o t
he support and love of her parents for most of her life, leliana is ja
ded, introverted, and quiet. even at school, she always kept to he
rself and studied alone. nevertheless, she has a strong understandi
ng of what it means to be an iselma, and the immense pressure fro
m her parents means that, to her, failure is not an option. she will
win the holy grail war and perhaps then, she will finally win the lo
ve and respect she wanted as a child. tactically-minded and books
mart, but these traits don't always translate to perfect skills on a
battlefield, and the truth is she doesn't have much experience fig
hting or even being around other mages. she has never really kno
wn love, certainly not from her parents nor from her sister. all in
all, she is a girl who has been forced to take on the mantle of ad
ulthood too early by her parents. perhaps it is thankful she has t
he greatest teacher of all time, scáthach, as her servant, then.

unlike kamui's eyes, hers are hereditary, inherited from her blood
line. they grant her the ability to perceive possibilities of the fut
ure. normally dormant, she can activate it at will. stronger than i
ts counterpart predictive precognition, in that this determinative
precognition allows her to choose which of the possible futures wi
ll come to pass. once chosen, that future is completely fixed. the
re are two documented weaknesses to this: first, there is nothing
that can be done if there is only one possibility available. also, o
nce the future has been chosen, it starts to be given form - and t
his form can be cut or interfered by those who can see it, althou
gh few can do so. this includes those w/ the mystic eyes of death
perception, who can see death lines on any inanimate object.

part of the iselma family, a well-known magus bloodline and branch family of
the valualeta family, which is considered one of the three great noble familie
s of the clock tower. leliana's ancestors are generally known to be scholars an
d professors of the clock tower, as well as powerful magi. they are also notor
ious for their endless pursuit of beauty. each generation of the iselma family
has created a "princess of gold and silver" which embodies the success of the
ir research thus far. although the iselmas are closely attached to the clock to
wer, itself an offshoot organization of the mage's association, they are intent
on winning the holy grail for themselves, to further their pursuit of beauty, &
this makes them the adversary of itou kamui, the mage's association's chosen
representative in the upcoming holy grail war.
leliana was not originally the heir to her family's fortunes, nor would she hav
e been their original choice for the holy grail war. she had a sister, two years
her senior, the original princess of silver and gold, who was better at everyth
ing: more perfect, more magical circuits, more sophisticated, more sociable,
and most of all - more beautiful. traditionally, only the oldest or the child w/
more magical circuits is groomed as successor. in leliana's case, she was neith
er, but her family had the powerful valualetas backing them so rather than be
sent away or adopted into another magus family (as the tokiomis did with the
ir two daughters, rin tohsaka and sakura matou), leliana was instead sent to b
oarding school for most of her life, forced to pretend that magic was not a pa
rt of her identity, her potential unrealized by her uncaring parents. imagine h
er surprise when, as a young teenager, she was pulled from boarding school a
nd enrolled in the clock tower for classes by her parents. they kept the truth
from her for a time, but it didn't take long to figure out what happened: her
sister had, tragically, been killed in an incident involving another student. no
w, suddenly, the iselma family's hopes and dreams have been thrust onto leli
ana's shoulders - the spare has finally found a purpose. once, she thinks, she
and her sister were close, but that was before the politics of being born into
a magus family kept them apart. only one child can inherit the iselma magic
crest, and that child must be worthy of it. in another life they could have be
en best friends, but not this one.
