I absolutely adorreee this month's rats. I don't usually like the rats but I do love how soft their lil noses look with a flat bridge <3

I’ve found that the new line edits have a more “realistic” silhouette of a rat compared to the original, which has a more cartoony affect in my opinion.

Personally, the cartoony look about the original lineart is why I'm very partial to it.
The previous month and this month's mentions of the original lineart kinda got me wanting to speak about it more.

I love the silly little faces of the normal rats.
Not much of a fan of realistic designs since its (honestly) a bit jarring when there's other cartoonishly-proportioned and expressive pets like CS's dogs or chickens (my opinion, obv).

I also kinda liken the exaggerated features of the rats' face to characters of older animation.

Question: do we still have Rats, Horses, Draft horses or normal chameleon on the Day-0 stage?
All mine grew already (I know at least one of my drafts looks the same but grew on a different day)

This. I know I’ve already blown up the thread a lot asking people not to trash the original rat lineart just because of how much they enjoy these newer edits, but it’s good to see someone else who understands why it’s important and defends it. They are all cute in their own ways, but when I see people being blatantly hateful because they don’t like the original lineart’s exaggerated features, it reminds me of how people with certain features are treated worse by society in real life for not fitting into others’ beauty standards. I grew up watching old animation like Nimh and TGMD and also enjoy the cartoonish style that seems to match the rest of the site, but they also help young outcasts feel included and represented. I’m sure reading in every other post how little people like the original rat lineart, or seeing “I hate rats” in other’s trade rules, can be truly disheartening! I think it’s necessary for anyone comparing the two to consider this is one artists take on a classic pet, and not a replacement for the original, or an excuse to be negative about another artist’s work or the pets’ features.

I feel the same way. I find their small, beady eyes and sillier faces to be pretty appealing. They stand out well against a ton of other species that all have these rather similar-looking, bigger eyes alongside conventionally cuter aspects and proportions. If everything was "cute + big eyes" then they'd all just blend in together and feel a little boring IMO, so I'm happy that the rat lineart is unique in its own ways. Though it is a little unfortunate that the rate dislike is so strong that possibly half or more of the trade rules I read include something along the lines of "I hate them, do not trade them to me". I hope none of this comes across as me saying I hate the edits we've been getting lately, because I do like them. I just prefer the OG lines.

I'm used to unintentionally being part of that group that likes something unpopular, I'll admit. Seems as though quite a few of the 'weirder' things that aren't all that conventionally cute/pretty/cool end up appealing to me a lot (as a whole, not just on CS). It's just a little funny, I see so much talk on linearts like horses being widely disliked for being "too realistic", but these rat edits are liked for being realistic. The power of fluff and big, cutesy eyes... haha. (Not being negative or anything here, just a fun observation.)

It's common for people to say "this thing is ugly and/or horrible" when in reality they simply mean "it's not to my tastes". Pedantic, I know... (General life and internet thing, not an attempted dig at CS users.)

I'm used to unintentionally being part of that group that likes something unpopular, I'll admit. Personally, I don't get the dislike for equines at all. They are one of my favourite species here on CS and in real life.
On the other hand, I am among those few who dislike the CS dogs xD
And the "ugly because I don't like it"-thing annoys me as well.
