i agree that needing attention is normal human behaviour. humans are social animals. it shouldn't be pathologized all the time. the reason why some people are so desperately and extremely seeking it is that they were deprived of it earlier in their lives.

i couldn't get through the lord of the rings books as a kid. i read the hobbit, but could not finish the first lotr book because it was so uninteresting

Disagree, those books are great. I read all of them in 5th or 6th grade. Maybe you struggled with the pacing, but like the whole premise of the story is so incredibly interesting I don't know how you could find them boring...
