Prompt: My mom's side of the family are immigrants from Colombia and absolutely love doing anything during Christmas. Going to my grandparent's house during the winter was probably my favorite way to celebrate it growing up. On Christmas Eve, they would stay up until midnight so that we all got to go into Christmas day together. We would spend the night having a little party and snack platters. At midnight, we open everyone's gifts to each other, and call whoever couldn't be there to say merry christmas to them. My grandma always cooks something super yummy- this was usually when she would put in the time to make tamales and paella. I haven't been able to go for Christmas in a few years because of my work schedule and covid, but still always stay up until midnight and at least call her to say merry Christmas.

Baking gingerbread cookies has always been a tradition thanks to my mother! It's not a super family-exclusive holiday tradition, but the way we make them sure is! I would say we use a family recipe but the reality is we use no recipe at all. She lost the original written recipe over a decade ago and has always gone about it since by combining the spices needed in just the right estimated portions like she's mixing a potion. I guess part of the fun is the way the cookies turn out different every year! This year, the flavor turned out a little bland, so I baked chocolate chips into the second batch. Let me just say, chocolate chip gingerbread cookies are amazing.
