Meanwhile, their siblings have a grand time tossing it about in the air until just as sudden Birch Pelt turns back onto a cat and crashes into their older sister. For the next half hour Birch Pelt teaches them a lesson about messing with him, worm or not.

“Snap! Snap, come here fast! Howl has become a worm!” Frost wailed frantically as Snap entered back into camp.

“He became…a worm?” Snap flattened her ears back, “How? Cats don’t become worms.”

“I don’t know! I was telling him of our patrols yesterday and when I turned he became a worm!” Frost is on the verge of tears, which is not uncommon and thus ignored by the rest of the cats in camp. She will wear herself out eventually.

Snap carefully sniffed the worm in question, “So small….even as a worm he is short.” Snap sighed and gently scooped the worm into her paw. “I will watch him. Perhaps he will become a cat again with patience.”

The worm wriggled in her grasp, “No, Howl, you must stay. Worms are easy to loose.” She leavened her gaze on the worm, “You have until the moon comes to become a cat, or I will have to leave you in the dirt. Make choices, Howl.”

“No! What if he is eaten! He is the leader!” Frost cried.

Snap flicked her ears, “They can’t lead as a worm. They will like dirt more. Worms don’t know much, they’ll forget us soon. We must be prepared for this, Frost, or the Grass will become disorderly. He is my love, but we must survive without him.”

Frost sobs in a much too dramatic manner. On the other side of camp, Howl wonders what she is yelling about now. He walked away for maybe five minutes. Why was Snap speaking to her paw? Was she holding a…worm? Why…?

The Wanderers would probably think whoever was turned into a worm had disappeared, they would work hard day and night trying to find their missing clanmate. Of course, one of the kits would witness it and know what happened, and none of the adults would believe them so they'd just keep their worm friend safe from harm in the hopes that StarClan would grant them paws again!
