Wings hurried through the trees. The wood was thin, older growth which was all too familiar to the small creature. He was a small brown bat, and his panic grew with each passing moment. “Verve!” He yelled frantically. “Please you must help!”
His cries echoed through the empty forest, his anxiety growing with each passing moment that nobody was going to hear his cries for help. He suddenly stopped in his tracks, behind the large oak 100ft ahead was a bright glow. A familiar comfort waved over him. “Verve! You must help!”
This time he had awoken the creature successfully. Behind the large oak was a creature with a glowing tail. The forest creatures referred to it as a beacon of light, or the forest savior.
“What’s wrong little brown bat?” Verve questioned. “Why are you so upset tonight?”
He stretched and yawned, as if he had been sleeping a great while.
The little brown bat was still frantically upset. “You don’t understand! They are back and they’re destroying the wood! They’re going to kill the forest!”
Verve sighed. He had warded them off for years now, and they keep getting creative with their approach. Each year, he would do something different. Feed into local lore, present an endangered specimen to ensure the lands preservation, tormenting the humans themselves. But somehow they continue to persist. “Let me go to them, how far north are they?” “At least a few miles!!”
Verve ran toward the humans at an astonishing speed, but he did so strategically and swiftly.
Sure enough they had many trucks, and worked through the night filling their beds with old growth pine. “How will I spook them
this time..” he turned to his glowing tail, with its angry hidden face.
While they rested verve retrieved a stick. They were murmuring now, and quieting down for the night, so verve moved quickly before they fell asleep. He beat the stick on the side of one of the pines.
A loud crack echoed throughout the woods and a man sat straight up. “What was that?” He asked.
“Shut up, and rest.” Said the others.
He did it once more, and another sat up. Panic spread across their faces.
“It’s probably just that stupid creature we read about in the paper. Oooooooo it’s going to get you!” One teased. “I’ve heard itstwelve foot tall and has monstrous fangs!!” Another picked.
Their camp began to glow, and all three turned their heads. In the woods, in the trees was a giant floating star with an angry glow. Using his powers of light he lit the woods up as if it was day.
“Go away!!” He yelled in a deep foreboding voice. They screamed and cried, leaving everything behind. “Go and git! Don’t ever come into my woods again! I’ll curse your land, and I’ll curse your home. I’ll curse your wife and your kids to!”
...
It wasn’t long before little brown bat approached the giant oak again. “They’ve put up signs and wire! They’ve barricaded the road and destroyed the camps! How did you save us?” Verve shrugged. Just spooked them again! Nothing too big. But I’d do anything to keep you safe, little brown bat.” He smiled and thanked him once more before flying away.
Verve closed his eyes, and pulled his tail against his body before slowly falling back to sleep.
