WHAT IS A DINO KITTEN ?
Prior to the extinction of the Great Dinosaurs, Dino Kittens were primarily prayed upon by larger predatory creatures. Due to their small size and nimble abilities though, they somehow managed to narrowly escape extinction themselves.
For hundreds of years, no one saw or heard from these little animals. That is, until very recently.
A scientist by the name of Dr. Dennis McGuffin was stationed at the base of a volcano in Peru, living in a remote part of the rainforest there with a few colleagues and his cat Juniper. During a terrific storm one night, Dr. McGuffin heard the wails of a cat, just outside the door. Oh my, did I forget to let Juni in? He wondered to himself. Hastening to the door he flung it open expecting to see a ball of sopping wet orange sitting on the stoop. Instead, he met eyes with something he had never had a hope of seeing in person. Two large blue eyes peered at him. In a flash of lightning a back arched in fear showed pointy scales sticking straight out from the spine. Dumbfounded, Dr. McGuffin stood in disbelief. The torrents poured in the door, creating a lake of water on the floor. Another bolt of lightning flashed, and it was gone.
For the next 2 years of his life, Dr. Dennis McGuffin and his colleagues scoured the forest in search of what many people believed to be a hallucination. Eventually the government pulled its funding, and the crew was forced to pack up their belongings and head back to their homes. A few days before his boat was scheduled to leave the mainland, a violent storm struck. Dr. McGuffin was caught miles from shelter with only a small tent which didn't stand a chance against the raging gales of wind and rain. Soaking wet and freezing, Dr. McGuffin wrapped himself in the ripped pieces of what used to be his tent, and drifted into a restless sleep.
When he awoke, the storm had passed but had left devastation in its wake. Trees were snapped and lay broken on the forest floor. Leaves and branches littered all around. He stood, cold and dripping but grateful he had somehow not been crushed in the night.
Just then, a sound came from behind him. Dr. McGuffin whipped around, and to his amazement, there stood two familiar blue eyes peering at him from atop a felled tree. The creature tilted his head, tiptoeing nearer to the Dr. Suddenly realizing he probably wouldn't make it out of here alive anyway, Dennis stretched out his hand and closed his eyes. Fully anticipating being bitten or attacked, the next moments he would tell and retell for the rest of his days.
In his outstretched hand, he felt something soft, and warm. A buzzing seemed to be omitting from it -- he opened his eyes to find the head of the creature resting in his hand. The buzzing was a deep bubbling purr coming from inside the creature's chest. Much like a natural cat, but resonating much louder and fuller. The fur was similar too, to a house cat but seemed to have a water resistant coating over it, making droplets of moisture form and fall away.
Dr. Dennis was found by a rescue team 2 weeks later. He had made and filled 6 makeshift books with information regarding how these creatures lived, what they ate, where they slept, the different breeds he had seen, and everything in between. While he was reluctant to leave the paradise he had stumbled upon and looked for his whole life, he knew the world needed to know.
The creatures were named Catulus Dinosaurum, which translates to Dinosaur Kittens. After another 10 years, a sanctuary was built in honor of the man who discovered them. Sadly Dr. McGuffin passed away just days before its official grand opening.
Today, Dr. McGuffin's daughter, Dr. Ede Slate runs the sanctuary, and continues her father's work in Peru.

ADOPTION
Since the discovery of Dino Kittens, the need for researchers and skilled care-givers has increased tremendously. Due to this newly found need for well made and carefully attended habitats, the McGuffin Slate Institute has created and fine tuned an adoption process which allows for Dino Kittens to be sent to safe and comfortable habitats.
Where To Begin
While there is a bit of a process to go through, Dino Kittens are still so fun to adopt and there is no limit to how many you can own! If you are interested in bringing your own DK home but aren't sure how to begin, keep reading through this detailed guide to find all the information you need!
On the Main Page you will find the adoption pages for any Dino Kittens that are in need of a habitat. When a DK is looking for a home, they will have "ADOPT ME" written on their reference page. While this typically means that this adopt is open for applications, its always a good idea to check the end date as well as the last page to make sure it hasn't closed and is still available.
There are many different types of processes for adopting a DK, and they will vary with every one. Here are just a few examples!
Naming contest - The artist will pick the name that suits the dino the best. Be sure to keep within any boundaries set by the artist!
Personality contest - You write out a personality that you think fits, and the artist will pick their favorite. Sometimes, there will be small restrictions such as using a certain word, or keeping within a specific theme.
Image or Gif contest - The artist will give guidelines and you will pick an image or a gif that fits into those guidelines.
FCFS or "First Come First Serve" - The adopt will be awarded to the user who posts a correctly filled out form first. Editing your form before the artist announces the winner will result in your being disqualified, and the adopt will go to the next correct form!
Filling Out an Adoption Form
Every adopt will have a basic form, with extra things like a personality section or image section added depending on the competition type. The basic "skeleton form" will look something like this, and will always have these things.
Username - Your username goes here!
Name - Whatever name you choose for the Dino you are trying to win. Make sure to follow any naming guidelines the artist might have set!
Gender - You are welcome to choose whatever gender you would like for your Dino Kitten!

READOPTION
When a caregiver is no longer able or willing to provide a habitat for their Dino Kitten, they must go through the readoption process. This process was set in place by Dr. Slate in order to protect the species.
Where To Begin
In order to readopt your Dino Kitten, you need to be aware that this is a permanent process and cannot be reversed. So you must be absolutely sure before beginning!
There are 3 ways a readoption can be done; gifting, trading, and user-held readoption.
Readoption Process
Gifting - This is a great way to readopt your Dino Kitten! If you choose to gift to another user, both you and the new owner must post on the original adoption page confirming the gift. Once that's done, the *new* owner must PM the archivist with a link to the Dino Kitten and it's ID #, so that it can be changed in the archive. Here is an example that can be copied and used; (new owner's profile link must be provided to prevent confusion)
- Code: Select all
This Dino Kitten has been gifted to username.
Trading - Dino Kittens can also be traded to other caregivers and researchers. In this method, you can trade a Dino Kitten for the following; a. Another Dino Kitten, b. Art (not other characters), c. Species items. Trading is done through the Discord, in the Trading Tent. You can find all of the more detailed information there! Once a new owner has been selected, both users must follow the protocol listed under "Gifting" in this section.
User-held Readoption - In this method of readoption, a caregiver or researcher is allowed to run a simple adoption competition in order to find a good fit for their Dino Kitten.
Allowed competition types include but not limited to; a. Free raffle, b. Personality contest, c. Naming contest, etc.
Disallowed competition types include; a. Paid raffles, b. Auctions, c. Trades.
Once a new owner has been selected, both users must follow the protocol listed under "Gifting" in this section.

BREEDING & HATCHING
This field guide is incomplete! Hang tight while we continue our research.Much like their Dinosaur counterparts, DKs are hatched from clutches of eggs. Dino Kittens typically lay and hatch a single egg at a time, but they have been known to hatch two in some cases.
NOTES- Only 2 Dino Kittens of the same subspecies may breed together
- Gender does not matter
- 1 kit per litter is standard, twins are rolled for at the time of breeding. (very low chance)
- Eggs must "incubate" for 1 week before the kit is hatched. The kit will then have 1 additional week before being able to breed itself.
HABITAT BUILDING
CAVES & TREEHOUSES
There are two primary spaces in which you may find a Dino Kitten living comfortably. Caves, which are typically dark and cozy, with moss beds nestled between rocks. And Treehouses, cool and sunny, often catching the breeze whisking through the trees.
Due to most Dino Kittens now living in captivity, its vital that they are given a familiar place that is as close to their natural habitat as possible. They usually have no preference on the two types of homes, so use your best judgement to determine what will work for your Dinos.
Where to Start
When you get your first Dino Kitten, it's vital that you set up a habitat as soon as possible! Your first step is going to be choosing wether they will live in a Cave or a Treehouse. *This decision does not effect how your Dino Kittens are used within the species. It is simply to help you start the development of your herd!*
If you already have a place where you like to keep all of your characters you are more than welcome to use that, or some people even make whole websites dedicated to sorting out their characters! All you need to do is make sure that all of the required information is there, so there are no issues later on. At the bottom of this post you will find a skeletal form that you are free to use, whether you choose to add coding or not. It has all of the basic info and is easy to copy and paste wherever you need it to be.
Naming Your Habitat
The very first step of creating a Dino Kitten habitat, is picking out a name that is unique to you and your kitties! Always take a look through the habitat directory, so that you don't accidentally have the same name as someone else. If you need help generating a name, I would highly suggest going to your fellow researchers and asking for help. There are some creative minds out there!
Habitat Requirements
This is where you will find the ever important information that is required for every Dino Kitten in order for you to have an approved habitat for your Dino Kittens. All of these items are included in the skeleton form below, with some general explanations here.
Name (The name you chose when you got your DK)
Gender (The gender you chose when you got your DK)
Adoption Page (Link to the actual adoption/creation page, even if it was a breeding!)
Mother (Only if it was a breeding)
Father (Only if it was a breeding)
Slots (All DKs have 4 breeding slots)(An actual list must be shown, to make sure each slot is listed accurately.)
What's Next?
So you've finished creating your comfy habitiat. Now what? Well, now you need to utilize the Registered Habitat Archive! By having your habitat put into the archive, it helps other users be able to locate you if they have a breeding slot from one of your Kittens, or just want to take a look around. To get your habitat put into the archive, all you have to do is copy the form located on the thread, and send it to the archivist!
Registered Habitat Archive
Archivist: NONE
If any changes occur after your habitat is archived (i.e; username change, habitat name change, change of thread or location) you will simply need to utilize the #habitat-updates channel in the Discord and an archivist will take it from there!
Skeleton Template
This template includes all of the basic information that is required in a habitat in order to be officially registered. You are more than welcome to add on whatever you see fit, from pronouns to personality, to history and everything in between!
*The mother and father section is only required in the case of a Dino Kitten being from a breeding.
*You are not required to show an image of the Dino Kitten, but it is usually found helpful to artists and other users.
