I don't think that knowing the thresholds would necessarily "satisfy" the wider user base on rarity levels but what it would do is provide some key information for those who put together guides and archives on understanding pet value.

building comprehensive guides on pet rarity and rarity history is something that several dedicated players onsite do and have done over the course of CS's existence as a website. and that sort of thing takes a ton of effort, time, and research (research meaning searching up old forum posts and piecing together what we know from those vs what we've been aware of over the timeline of CS.)

for those who are diligent guide-makers, knowing the thresholds on rarity calculation would remove some extra guessing from the process of structuring new help for less experienced traders.


Yes, for an overall view of all categories I agree it would be useful. My comment was specifically about wanting to know the OMGSR rarity threshold to compare different OMGSRs with each other.

I see your point, and am not trying to say I want several more categories or more confusion, my only worry about this is that it helps separate a ton of other categories but makes this one seem even more confusing, in my opinion. I see it being much, much easier for even newer users to get their hands on some newly changed OMG so rares (e.g. toxic bun), while others that appear to be much more rare are lumped into the same rarity category (e.g. cerb). I just worry people will be even more frustrated at not finding someone to swap 1:1 of the same rarity when the change was supposed to help that sort of mindset and spread things out more evenly. I agree it did for a large number of pets, I just worry there's almost too much disparity in the highest category which could lead to even more confusion for players. if that makes sense?

I guess it's not really a question though, as I think people will still base many higher values off of user made lists and/or references of other completed trades. I do hope the new change helps make trading easier for lower rarity pets though, as it did help spread them out much more which I do appreciate.

Overall I think I'm really happy with the update. It's extremely gratifying to see more variance in normal litters of more recent years, as I look through the archives and remember how hard certain outcomes were to find despite ending up with the uncommon tag, and now having extremely uncommon or rare tags! On the other hand, there are so many OMGSRs now that it does feel like some of the values of rarer pets got more obscured in the shift. But it will be interesting to see if that will be the final nail in the coffin for the ever-confusing non/sorb/MA system, or if the system will just evolve.

I get your worry, but this has always been a problem with the super high value pets trade imo. Value is subjective, and not tied to rarity all that much. Especially in the higher tiers, demand counts much more. This new redistribution actually showed the unfairness of the previous system.

I mean, look at the very first trade posted in the "VR and OMGSR Successful Trades Thread": trades/viewtrade.php?id=81127243&userid=939791&signature=m95kknkgm_bD9uPjm5L46Q

Raven dog's (perceived) value is based solely on demand, not on rarity (because it isn't actually all that rare).

It's really interesting to see these trades posted, because they illustrate just how convoluted trading these top tier pets actually is. I mean: trades/viewtrade.php?id=83148884&userid=776890&signature=1iQLrDkD6PIew0U-13sC1Q 6 OMGSRs for 1 OMGSR doesn't seem fair, but that's what it's perceived value demands.

Swapping any random VR and OMGSR 1:1 even in the past has never been a thing, probably never will be. The rarity label is just one factor that makes up a pet's value.

I'm having a lot of fun with this new rarity system! It feels like I have so many more valuable pets because my brain is so used to interpreting the darkish red as very rare, even though I know that's not the case any more :D.

I especially like that we got so many options for the new rarity bars, so that people can pick the styles they prefer. Thanks staff for this lovely update! I'm mildly terrified excited to see what this new granularity does to trading lmao

cant imagine the trading community is too happy about this one but me on the other hand. this is such a cool update i loved looking thru all my pets to see what changed. overall rarity updates in general are a lot of fun for me but this one particularly was super fun. definitely giving me motivation to finally re-organize all my groups finally lol

I really don’t think anyone here meant “please release the exact number of pets in circulation.” I think a lot of us realize this isn’t a question staff is willing to answer and have been able to accept that.

what I believe we’re hoping to have answered is what the ratio of pets is that determines rarity. like if 1 pet per 1000 active users means omgsr, or 1 pet per 500 active users means extremely rare, etc.

that’s something that would help immensely with understanding new rarity distribution without say exactly how many of these pets are out there. is that something that staff is willing to release?

I see, sorry for the misunderstanding! I can't answer for definite as I don't have any insider knowledge. I would imagine that if there were plans to release that information it would have been with this update, but I can't speak to what admins do/don't have planned. Sorry!

this this this. as a casual player who doesn't have time to study the lore of nons/sorbs/MAs, it feels safe to say that this post absolutely nailed it! i hope the new rarity system means people can trade based on actual rarities, not an unofficial list that only some people know about. i've been here since 2011 and got my first/only OMGSR in this update, which is my only goal on CS; it has been pretty much impossible due to the list, but with the rarity reshuffle, getting more than one feels much more attainable (as of course the one i got is one i don't want, rip).

also i just have to say that i really love the rarity names and colors staff ended up going with, and the choice of rarity bars is a great way of including everyone!
