I get that the staff is trying to use 'Common' and 'Rare' as their keywords and don't want to stray too far from that, but something like 'Abundant' or 'Mythical' sounds much cleaner and more coherent than using abbreviations/internet speak.

Not to be rude, but I disagree. Those more whimsical names are too vague, and kind of boring imo. And there are already so many games using the word “mythical.”

Not rude, just a difference in opinion! I actually used Mythical specifically because it's a typical shorthand for 'Rare and hard to obtain' in kids games like Pokemon, which would keep the term from being too confusing for younger users. Though I don't know how we could get much more boring/dry than 'Common/Uncommon/Rare'.

Which is fine, but if they're going to update the rarity system it doesn't hurt to take a look at whether something could be added to the site by changing it up.

While I don't appreciate when people take God's name in vain; which predates the internet, I wouldn't mind seeing this implemented. However, based on how the votes are going, I would think that this is a change that will not come to pass. The acronym is something that became less of a curse word and more of just something that people say, much like LOL or BRB. The etymology of oh my god, is something that I think is interesting for research purposes, but not much else. As it stands, I'm pretty sure it won't change and that CS will keep it on their website. It is offensive, it disrespects God's name, but if you're a follower of Jesus, you know that a non-believer won't understand why that is important. So, I'm sorry, but I highly doubt it will make any changes. We don't have issues, we're not stupid or weird, it just doesn't mesh with our religion. Just like Halloween, or Christmas without Jesus, there are somethings that we cannot change and don't have to be a part of.

I'm really usure if it was ever confirmed if the saying OMG on this site actually means "oh my god", but either way you can simply choose to see it as "oh my gosh" or "oh my goodness"? (please someone correct me if im wrong because I dont have the time to research right now)
This very much is an issue with the minority of people who are in fact advocating for this change, it is an issue with how you perceive the phrasing as it can be ambiguous if you choose to see it that way. I feel theres just a very simple fix of just substituting the word :(
yet again not being rude, simply stating where I am coming from and my opinion on a solution to the issue.

i don't think abundant and mythical are great descriptors for rarity. i like the use of omgsc and omgsr since they emphasize where they fit on the rarity scale. i wouldn't like the idea of terms on the site changing to seem more "clean." a lot of things on this site are a product of it's time during the lul so random days, i love it!

assuming omg refers strictly only to 'god'- it's been pointed out, but the use of god's name in vain is very distanced from the modern use & etymology of the expression. 'omg' is an exclamation that's used in products (including kid's) on the shelves, ie; stickers exclaiming 'omg', t-shirts, etc.

the group of people for whom this concern is meant... are not really affected by the use of the word. it is not used nor has it ever really been used in a way to insult or demean monotheistic beliefs, it is not a slur. to me it just seems blown out of proportion; while an interesting thought, it seems tangential.

Re: Change OMG Name

Postby TheUnknown » Mon Aug 21, 2023 8:13 am

just going to add in a little thing thats on my mind:
I come from a christian background but I myself am no longer christian. I've always been told to "not use the Lord's name in vain". So using "OMG" on this site is fine (at least to me) because we're not using His name in vain or anger or anything of the sort. We are, if you read OMG as oh my god, just saying his name aloud to emphasize the effect of how many pets there are of this kind (OMGSC) or how very little there are (OMGSR).

No idea if I explained that well or not, but, like the site isn't taking his name in vain so why be upset?

** also is it me or is the poll confusing and all the answers seem to point to: yes we should change it?

As a believer of god, and please know this is to me personally, I truly don’t see why it’s bad if someone says oh my god. If you feel like it’s offensive, then sure, don’t use it yourself, but you can’t control others speak <3

This is really interesting to me, I have never heard to this be offensive to any kind of religion ;o; but what do I know haha

No support, sorry. I understand that some religions are offended by "taking the Lord's name in vain", but the internet slang "omg" has since been pretty far removed from religion in general. I'm also confused why "oh my goodness" is offensive? I thought that was the replacement for "oh my god" so people aren't saying it "in vain", but you're saying that's no good either?
There are plenty of things some people don't like or are offended by, and if staff bent to everyone's will, we wouldn't have CS anymore. Some people are afraid of some of the pets on the site (spiders, rats, etc.), does that mean they should remove all of those pets? Some people are offended by Halloween because it goes against their religious beliefs, does that mean we shouldn't have Halloween events anymore? I also don't think this could really be compared to not being allowed to say something that offends or insults old people, or any other specific group of people, because it's not being directed at anyone or anything, it's just a rarity term, that's all.

oh please dont understand me wrong! :D it was meant for the people who REALLY get offended about that, because for me its like, if they get offended about the omgsr name...then they need to get offended about someone saying oh my god too xD yk?
