Honey's hoard

Postby ylesia » Thu Aug 17, 2023 4:48 am

Honey's hoard

It was a warm day of summer and Honey was quietly sleeping on the couch. She woke up hearing someone softly speaking outside. She ran to the window and looked: the neighbor's kids were playing with a ball and said ball accidentally fell in her garden. She followed with her eyes the ball. It was red. A red shape of perfection.
She observed the kids going back to their house and, when there was nothing left to see, she laid again on the couch. As soon as she fell asleep she began to dream. There were a lot of balls, of all sizes and colors. Honey was in the middle of them and was jumping, barking, running. But all dreams eventually comes to an end. Honey woke up as someone petted her. It was her owner. And there were no balls in the room. She jumped down the coach and ran to the door. Her owner opened the door for her and Honey ran in the garden. When she was sure the woman wasn't following her, she head to a corner of the garden, where a big bush was growing with no gardener control. She crawled under it. In the dark, she could spot three spherical shapes. Her balls. Now, she needed to add the fourth one to her hoard: the beautiful red ball. She got out of the bush and started thinking about a plan.
Between her garden and the neighbor's one there was a simple fence and she already dug a hole to get under it. One of the balls in her hoard came from there. Honey approached the fence and peeked to the other side. No humans, one ball. She went to her hole and crawled till the other garden. Trying to keep her body as close as possible to the ground she walked toward the red ball abandoned in the garden. She stopped when she heard humans approaching and hid in a near bush. One of the kids opened the door and headed to the ball. He grabbed it and went back into the house.
Honey stayed still. That kid stole her ball! She didn't like children, not at all. Honey went back to her garden through the hole and laid dow in the garden.
A few minutes later her owner opened the door. Honey ran to her, crying.
«Honey! What's all that dirt? What happened, sweetie?» she petted her, trying to remove some leaves and dirt from her long fur.
Honey kept on crying and her owner let her in the house, ordering her to wait in front of the door. When she came back she was holding a brush and ... a new tennis ball!
«Don't loose this one, too, ok?«
Honey stopped crying, grabbed the ball and laid down, happy and satisfied, while her owner brushed her long, golden fur.

Honey's first snow

Postby ylesia » Sat Aug 19, 2023 4:56 am

Honey's first snow

Honey was trying to sleep on the back seats of the car while her owner was driving and singing that high noisy music the she always listened to. The music stopped only when the car stopped. Honey looked outside the window of the car, but she couldn't recognize the place. Everything was white and humans were wearing warm coats. Her owner opened the back door and put her leash on her. Honey jumped down and the moment later jumped back in the car, whining. Her owner petted her, encouraging her to get down. She was laughing, but Honey couldn't be more scared. That thing, was cold and ... wet. Honey look down and putting all her courage together, she jumped down. This time, she didn't move and smelled the thing. It was like water, but cold. She tried a little taste ... yeah, water. It was safe. Honey began to walk around. Now that she knew it was just some sort of cold water, she was beginning to understand the fun of it. She wasn't cold, her long fur was warm enough and even if her paws were a little colder than what she would have desired, it was worth it: there were a lot of things they could do with snow!
Her owner threw some snow on her nose. Honey sneezed and jumped playfully on her. They kept on playing till Honey, tired, laid down. After a couple of minutes, her owner made her stand up again and they continued walking in the snow.
Noises were strange. It was like they were coming from a farthest distance. Smells were weird as well. Everything was covered in the smell of that cold water they were immersed in.
After a couple of hours of exploration, they were back to the car, both tired and wet.
«We both deserve a warm bath now, Honey» her owner said.
Honey pricked up her hears. Did she hear bath? Now she liked the snow even better!

Re: Honey and Rae go hiking

Honey and Rae go hiking

Taking on a hike a dog with a long fur after a day of rain is never a good idea. Can you imagine what it means to take two dogs with a long fur? Well, they will be covered in mud right after stepping out of the car.
That day I was taking care of another dog, Rae. Rae, like Honey, is a beautiful shepherd with long lucent fur. The two of them are great friends and apparently they had decided to destroy my house, so I took them both out on a hike. As I was saying, as soon as they touched ground, they were already muddy dogs. Of course they were also excited, and an excited dog have to jump on its owner. Anyway, we took the trail. The girls had really a lot of fun. They sniffed, played and barked at the birds, all this without caring about the human that was trying to hold their leashes.
When I was tired, we sat in the shade of a tree. They both reclaimed their daily dose of petting and I was more than happy to accommodate them. When they were done, we drank some water and kept walking. Suddenly, they stopped, pointing something in the bushes. A low growl began to vibrate through the air. The only thing Honey could growl to are cats. She hates cats. Probably she also hates a lot of other animals, but she hasn't met them yet. A few seconds later, indeed, an orange cat came out of the bush and sprinted away from the dogs. I didn't expect Honey and Rae to chase it and as they started running I fell in the mud and dropped the leashes. Luckily, both Honey and Rae always answer to an angry shout of recall and slowly came back, ears down and tail between the legs.
I didn't want to go home yet, so, covered all three of us in mud from head to toe, we continued our leisurely walk. Finally, we arrived where I wanted to get: a beautiful waterfall. I expected the dogs to be exhausted, but they both love water and I guess all that water must have looked like some sort of canine paradise. I let them in the water, taking some mud off myself while playing with the dogs. When they came out of the water they were visibly tired. I couldn't believe my eyes. We slowly walked back to the car, the dogs by my feet, with no cats to drive them mad.
Once home, I cleaned them out of the mud and gave a toy each while they laid down to sleep. Finally, I could relax.

Honey's best friend

Postby ylesia » Wed Aug 23, 2023 11:40 pm

Honey's best friend

The temperature is extreme and Honey is laying down under the shades of a huge oak while her owner is reading a book. Neither of them has the slightest intention of getting up from there. Next to Honey's nose there is a seal plushie. It's her favorite toy and she loves to carry it on walks. Honey is not a great chewer and the plushie had to be fixed just once. That day was traumatic for her. She was playing with her new and already beloved seal, when she broke it with her teeth. Her owner took it away from her, saying that maybe it wasn't a great idea. Honey began to cry like never before and her owner decided to give the little seal another chance. She patched it up and added some ribbons to make it easier for Honey to grab it without breaking it into pieces. Since that day, Honey has always been really gentle with the plushie and it was never patched again.
With a huge effort Honey raises up, takes the plushie from the ribbon and sits again closer to her owner, leaving the little plushie seal on her legs. Her owner takes the little plushie.
«Thank you, Honey» she says, petting her.
Honey lays her head on her owner's legs. That's exactly what she wanted. She knows that being cute is the best way to have attentions. At least, "good" attentions.
After a while, the human stands up and, taking the book with one hand and Honey's leash and plushie on the other, starts walking back home. They are waiting for the traffic light to turn green when another dogs arrives next to them. Honey and the dog sniff each other, but the other dog is more attracted by the little seal. Honey starts growling and the two humans separate them before the situation escalates. All the rest of their way home, Honey walks with her nose on the plushie and as soon as they are arrives, grabs it and takes it in her kennel. Probably she won't risk carrying it around again.

A scary encounter

A scary encounter
ft. Honey

I was hiking in a wood with my owner. We were having a great time, the air was fresh and there were a lot of interesting smells everywhere. Suddenly I sniffed something really strange. At that time I didn't know what it was, but it was really exciting. I began to pull my owner in that direction, but she resisted. I will never understand why humans are so little curious. Anyway, since I couldn't go there, I stopped. I mean, that was the only reasonable thing to do, wasn't it? I sat there, pointing the direction from where the smell came while my owner tried to pull me. She is not really strong and for me it was an easy game. I must confess that I felt a little guilty when she started yelling at me, but I had to know what the smell was.
Finally, I won. It couldn't have gone differently, actually. She began to slowly walk in that direction, keeping me really close to her. That was acceptable. As we were getting close I could feel my ears pricked up and my tail stiffened. The smell was stronger. My owner stopped.

«Okey, Honey, this is cute, but not for you. Let's get back to the trail» she said, pulling me back.

What? We were there, but I couldn't get closer? That was not acceptable at all. I tried to go there, while my owner was trying to keep me. She was stronger than I thought, but finally I could get close enough to see the thing. It was ... a ball and it looked really fluffy! I wanted it and stretched out my snout. My owner was telling me something like "Get away from the hedgehog!" but I didn't understand. Finally, I was completely laid down and gently touched the ball with the nose. I will never forget that moment. I jumped back, crying, taking my poor, kind, sweet owner with me. I didn't stop till we were on the trail. That ball hurt me! That was an evil ball!

My owner examined my nose. I was still desperately crying.

«There's nothing here, Honey» she said, petting me «Luckily, you barely touched it.»

Barely touched it! I was feeling pain! I ... no, there was no pain. Yet, that ball wanted to kill me. That was a good reason to cry, and that's what I did for the next hours.

The end of a journey... or maybe not?

Postby ylesia » Tue Aug 29, 2023 11:23 pm

The end of a journey ... or maybe not?
ft. Honey

I and Honey were almost on the the top of the mountain. It had been a difficult hike, but it was fun as well. That day, the trail was easy and sky was clear, just a few soft clouds were running above our heads, way faster than us. Honey was happier than usual, probably she sensed that we were about to reach the top. We were walking along a beautiful path, surrounded only by nature. Suddenly, we saw an eagle flying above us. It was beautiful and Honey sat, howling at it. I think she would like a pair of wings. Who wouldn't? When the eagle was out of our visual we kept on walking.

It took me a good minute to realize that we did it. The mountain was all under our feet and above us there was just that beautiful blue sky. I sat, and Honey laid down next to me. She was tired and so was I, but looking around us I knew it had been worth it. There was a magnificent view. Below us we could see the valley and part of the long trail that had taken us there. I said "we", but actually Honey was sleeping and she didn't see anything. Anyway, we rested there two hours, probably more. Then, it was time to go back home. Getting to the top had been a beautiful journey, but as we got up there we had to go down as well. I woke up Honey. She stared at me with a face that could only mean "What do you want from me, again?"

Nereus' shell

Postby ylesia » Sat Jan 25, 2025 10:47 pm

Nereus' shell
ft. Nereus

It was a wonderful sunny day and the beach was as beautiful as ever. The sound of ocean waves crashing on the shoreline sounded like poetry to Nereus' ears. He was trotting along enjoying watching the footprints left in the sand disappear washed away by the sea when something shimmering in the water caught his attention. He entered the sea and sank his head under the water. He could stay submerged for hours because of his gills, and he could see very well. The underwater world was wonderful. If he could he would have gladly left land and lived in the sea, but all his friends and his herd could not follow him. He did not want to live forever alone, like an outcast.

The shiny thing that had caught his eye was a seashell. He grabbed it with his mouth, trying not to drink too much water, and returned to the air. He dropped it on the sand to examine it better. It was wonderful! It was a mother-of-pearl shell, the size of his own hoof. It would have been a wonderful addition to his collection!

He was about to return home with his precious trophy when a squawk from the sea caught his attention. It was Morpheus, his dolphin friend, and along with him were many others. Morpheus began to jump out of the water to call him to play. How to resist a swim with dolphins! Nereus left the shell on the sand and jumped into the sea. They played for hours until the sun began to set and Nereus realized it was time to go home. But he had not forgotten about the shell. He went to get it back, but... it had disappeared! Yet he was sure he had left it right there!

Nereus began to fidget. Who could have stolen it from him? Someone from the herd perhaps? He was about to resign himself when he saw something moving in the sand. He moved closer to investigate. Crabs! Three crabs were moving in single line, and the first one was holding his very shell in its claws! Nereus stomped his hooves hard within inches of the crabs. That shell was his! The crab holding the mother-of-pearl dropped it and the three thieves scurried away in fright. Nereus, satisfied, took back his treasure and with a winning stride set out for home.

Personality

Nereus is sunny and sociable. He loves the company of friends, having fun and telling jokes. He loves the sea and everything that belongs there while he dislikes living in the woods. His jovial personality, however, makes him an easy target for those who want to take advantage of him since he instead tends to trust anyone who approaches him with a smile.

Why is he adapted to live in the ocean?

When Nereus was young he was like all the other fables in the herd, without gills or crests. Unlike the others, however, Nereus loved the sea and went there every day, spending entire days. One day he began to swim away from the shore. By the time he realized he was very tired, however, he was too far from shore to turn back. He began to sink. He was no longer breathing. He had almost lost consciousness when his body recovered. His eyes opened and he saw around him with a clarity he had never experienced. And he was breathing! He resurfaced and swam to the shore. It was then that he noticed the change in his body. How had this happened? He did not know, but he was happy about it, very happy.

The Black Poison - I

Postby ylesia » Thu Feb 13, 2025 10:32 pm

The Black Poison
Part I

ft. Nereus

The sea was flat under the gray sky. There was no noise, even the waves crashing on the shoreline seemed to respect the religious silence of stillness after the storm. It had been a terrible storm with very strong winds that had shaken the trees in the forest, causing many of them to fall. Nereus and his herd had sheltered in their houses made of huge hollowed-out logs a stone's throw from the beach and waited for the storm to pass.

Nereus remained staring at the gray sea, filling his nostrils with the salty smell he loved so much. Until a sound broke the silence and something leapt out of the water not too far from the shore. It was Morpheus, his best friend underwater. The dolphin leaped out again but did not seem as happy and playful as usual. There was a certain urgency, some awe. Nereus entered the water and began to swim toward the open sea, diving in. Down there there was no sign of the storm that had just passed, everything was as calm and wonderful as ever. The seaweed swayed slowly pushed by the current and the fishes swam peacefully. It was another world.

Morpheus appeared in his field of vision. He was definitely agitated and invited Nereus to cling to him with a touch on his back. Nereus brought his front hooves around the dolphin's neck, which immediately began to swim like lightning. Soon three more dolphins appeared with long seaweeds in their mouths, which Nereus grasped with his teeth and wrapped around his body, and in a moment a kind of sea quadriga had formed, darting very fast. That was how they took him around the seas: Nereus did not have a fin that allowed him to swim as fast as the dolphins, and they were never patient enough to wait for him.

At one point they stopped letting go of the seaweed and dispersed, leaving Nereus with a clear field of vision. If he had been in the air he would have screamed, but only air bubbles came out of his mouth. His gills began to pulsate faster as Nereus began to swim in the opposite direction. In front of him were the dolphins, who invited him with unkind taps of their snouts to approach the huge creature in front of him. It was really huge, the bigger thing he had ever seen. Its eye was as big as Nereus and it was fixed on him. However, the creature didn't seem aggressive. It was laying on the floor of the ocean motionless. His gaze looked like a cry for help. He approached slowly, cautiously. The creature blinked its huge eyelid and tried to move its head toward him, but failed. It was then that Nereus realized what was happening in front of him: the creature was dying and the dolphins had brought him there in the hope that he could help. But how could he, a young fable who knew nothing of the world, help a giant of the sea so much larger and more powerful than himself? The sea monster blinked again, and Nereus felt himself being pushed toward him. It was the dolphins. By now he was inches from the snout of the beast, which lifted its lip showing huge sharp teeth. Nereus swallowed then found himself in direct contact with the creature. His vision clouded over, and an entirely new scene, never seen before, appeared before him.

He is swimming, fast in the open sea. His mighty body hits the water with vigour and his fins moves his body in the direction he wants. It is a beautiful feeling, he is the master of the ocean and all the creatures know that and respect him. He is the Leviathan, the biggest and most powerful creature that has ever sailed the seas, land and sky. No one, not even the mighty dragons of the North can compete with him.

Then this vision abruptly stopped and another began. This time the emotions that struck Nereus were completely different.

The water is dark, almost black, and you cannot not see far. Swimming is tiring, as if the water has turned to jelly. Why has he gone so far? Is his ego so big that he thought he was immortal? He has to get out of there, back to the warm waters of the bay. But he struggles to move and each breath costs him immense effort. He has also lost his sense of direction, and suddenly, when he realizes he doesn't know which way to swim to get home, he has a panic attack. His breathing becomes labored. What is happening to him? He is the Leviathan, the most powerful creature in the world... or is him? All confidence vanishes and his eyelids are about to drop heavy on his eyes when a memory hits him like a strong current. He remembers the colourful fish that swam around him in marvellous choreography, the dolphins, always joyful, tickling him, and the sea birds that rested on his back to take a break form their acrobatic flights in the middle of the ocean. He has to go home. A sparkle rekindles in his eyes, he chooses a direction and begins to swim. He moves slowly, but he moves. His gaze fixed ahead. After a while he begins to feel the water becoming less viscous and familiar shapes begin to reappear in front of him: the seaweed, the rocks. He continues to swim, putting whatever strength he has left into his muscles. He only swims, not thinking. At some point he notices that swimming is easier, that he is moving faster. What little awareness he is left allows him to see that so many sea creatures have gathered around him that he can see nothing else. They have wrapped tough seaweed around his body and are pulling him along. It is the last thing he sees then he succumbes to exhaustion and everything goes black.

Nereus came to his senses and looked the Leviathan in the eye. That black water must have poisoned him and now he was dying. He was about to turn away when another vision began.

Urgency. Heal. Help. Hills seen from above as if flying. A grove of elm trees. A black fable with golden tattoos that glowed. A hut with dried herbs hanging everywhere. Heal. Help.

The vision vanished. Did the Leviathan want him to go to the mainland, find that fable and bring him the cure? The eyelid drooped and lifted again, as if in assent. Then it closed and did not open again. The effort in communicating with Nereus must have exhausted the sea king's strength. Nereus turned away and the dolphins towed him back to shore. When he was on the beach he turned around. The dolphins jumped out of the water inviting him to walk. He had a mission. He did not think he would be able to complete it, but he had no other choice. Squawks caught his attention: young fables from his herd were playing chase at the edge of the woods. They were his friends and he would have liked to join them, say goodbye to them before leaving. But he knew that if he did so he would lack courage. Without a second thought he set off in the opposite direction, walking along the beach. There was a determination in his eyes that he didn't know he possessed.

Introduction

This Compendium is by no means a definite and complete guide of all the herbs that have officinal properties. What we tried to achieve in these pages is compiling a list of the most common and useful plants that any healer in Draeridia could use. There might be other plants with the same properties but we believe that the herbs cited in this Compendium are enough to satisfy any necessity. All data collected is the result of an in-depth study of the effect of said herbs on fables and other animals. We tried our best to apply the scientific method to our research and to achieve reliable results.
Since some of the most common herbs can be found in multiple areas across Draeridia we decided to categorise the herbs for the systems they affect instead of their region of origin. It should also be noted that we didn't try to cultivate most of the herbs present in this volume and a stock of them is conserved dried after appropriate treatment. However some of the properties of the plants can be lost during the drying process. If this is the case the reader will find a note about that which will include suggestions for a different conservation of the herb where applicable.
A final disclaimer is due: we described the physical appearance of the herbs at the best of our capabilities but there might be variation of the species unknown to the author. We recommend to test the effect of herbs of uncertain identification before administering it to the patient.

Yellow Betty.
Image

This plant can be found only in the southern area of the Swampland region where you will notice that it is the dominant flower, covering large plots of the marshy land. During spring it has recognisable big yellow flowers of fleshy consistency. The stems are just a few inches hight and at first sight the weight of the flowers seems to be too much for them, bending them and letting the flowers' corolla touch the wet ground. However, after observation, we realised that this is a reproductive strategy: the flower is not pollinated by flying insects but instead by worms that abound in the wet region. On the base of the stem there are small leaves, as fleshy as the flower crown. The root system expand on the upper layers of the ground and doesn't reach considerable profundity.
The useful part of this plant for what concerns officinal properties is, incredibly, the stem. Even though the big yellow flowers conserve some of the chemicals of the stem we found out that they are not as efficient. Stem can be dried without any problems and conserved for future use.
They have strong digestive properties and can be consumed in many different ways: natural, as an infusion or chopped and mixed with other food. They have a strong unpleasant taste so it is advisable to mix them with something tastier. We tried different mixes and no reduction of their digestive properties was found.
This herb should be used in moderation: one or two stems are enough to cure even the more severe congestion. Higher dosage could cause abdominal pain and severe dizziness with possible fainting.

...

Igiafrass.
This herb can be found on the bench of the Foaming River where it intersects the eucalyptus forest. It has the shape of long, narrow cylinders and grows only in very wet soils. During summer there are some small white inflorescences. Despite the watery environment where it grows, igiafrass is quite dry and doesn't contain a lot of water inside.
It is really useful to prepare an ointment to apply on open wounds. It will prevent infections and will considerably reduce healing time. The ointment should be prepared by mashing the herb in a bowel of water until it will be soft enough to be smashed with a heavy stone. You should apply it on the wound as it is. This herb cannot be dried without it loosing its healing properties. To preserve it we recommend to prepare the ointment and to preserve it in a sufficiently damp container. This can be achieved by periodically adding water to it. It is possible to preserve the ointment for a couple of months if kept in adequate conditions.
There are no known contraindications to the use of this herb.

Note of the author: we wish to thanks Umina from the eucalyptus forest for the data collected on this herb and for periodically providing us with a stock of igiafrass ointment.

Conclusions

The careful reader will have noticed that we didn't analyse herbs from The Arid Desert. The reasons behind our choice are multiple. First, we believe we have collected enough herbs to satisfy all needs. Second, we are well aware of the dangers of that region and we feel that what we could possibly find there wouldn't be worth the risk. This is especially understandable if you think about the climate of that region: there is mostly sand and the only growing things are some dry roots. We know that these roots have very good nutritional properties but there is no evidence of their possible officinal properties. Third, even if we could find something interesting very few healers would venture in that land and thus our discoveries would be useful just to very few fables.
If you have any concern or you would like to discuss any of the topics of this book don't hesitate to contact me at the Hills, in the region between the Blue River and the Foaming River.

This concludes the Compendium.
