Spinning this off from a discussion in
another thread.
I feel like, an easily programmable way to make rarity more useful as a metric of value without giving away exact pet counts would be to assign pets along a spectrum rather than putting them into strict values. This wouldn't change pets having rarity labels or the rarity label they're currently in, but the color of their rarity tag would more closely reflect their rarity by allowing us to see smaller differences in rarity.
This is somewhat based on the way a game called osu! calculates and assigns difficulty:

This seems like it'd be more work calculation-wise but I don't think it would be if it's restricted to updating on the same schedule rarity currently updates? And the only other issue I can think of is that the images currently used don't work like that but I think you could make transparent versions of the rarity bars and let the color be filled in on-site.

Even for non colorblind people, gradients can be hard to see unless the color differences were pretty drastic and noticeable. An orange to red gradient between rare and very rare, for example, would be really hard to notice.
Which is why I think just adding new rarity tiers would be better, because that's more universal. ;;w;
You can mark it by stars or other forms.
I like this topic suggestion idea, too.
conarcoin wrote:This is a valid concern, and I do wonder if there'd be a way to numerically display the point in the range without displaying the pet count, maybe toggleable in settings alongside the current "display rarity image" setting so instead of like, a orangeish-red rare tag it'd display as like, Rare (5.6) or whatever number? (I just picked a random number as an example)
I worry that adding new rarity tiers in strict values woudn't help much with regards to date trading issues and the like (Dunno if that makes sense)

This writeup, while very lengthy and complex, shows that there are many ways to accommodate colorblind people when visualizing data!
Concept by ruptures:ruptures wrote:this is a really good idea people could hoard a pet with the exact rarity color they like/decimal they like eg. 44.4 or 11.1, i made a chart of how it could work

and decimals right after the rarity like
★★★★★★ Common 60.7

Support, this is a really cool idea!
I'm an artist.

When I order art, please message me when I ask you too! I do NOT always recheck forums as I am a busy person. There's a chance I won't have payment, I only keep payment when I know that a commission was accepted.

I do support this, but I think it would be difficult for colorblind users! ;;

Oh!! I love the idea of rarity stars, actually! That's super simple and probably an easier fix than re-doing all the tiers! ;w;

*nodding* Colors were just my initial idea because it's what I'd seen before and seemed the most simple to program, but I think the same effect could definitely be achieved in other ways c:

i agree w this. i think its a neat idea, but i also think it would add a lot of debate among users abt what color they actually are and it may be overwhelming for some.
we definitely need to figure out a better way to break down the rarities though for sure.
