What Helps/Helped You Overcome Hardships?

Postby acura, » Sat May 06, 2023 9:11 pm

Whether you were struggling with mental health issues, school, or something that felt almost impossible to overcome, at what point did it all just fall into place and get better? What did you do that made those times easier? When did it get better for you? What made it better for you? How are you doing now?

I think it would be lovely to share stories of overcoming hardships and how we overcame them; I'd love people to feel as if their courage to overcome their struggles is acknowledged. I think sharing stories of what helped us overcome hardships is a great way to connect with one another through interests, passions or goals and help each other indirectly.

Feel free to be as indepth or as general as you'd like just remember to please:

Keep the discussions/stories child friendly! Please stay kind to each other as well; this is an absolutely judgement free discussion zone. Remember to keep in mind CS rules in general.

for me, i tend to hyperfixate on a goal or hobby; it usually helps me find motivation to push through and makes me stay disciplined. my signature and avatar are great examples of this lol. a couple months back i was feeling crap; life kinda threw stuff at me and i didnt know what to do. during this period, i was (and still am) trying to get my full license (permit/provisional i think its called?), because of everything that was going on, i felt as if getting my license was unreachable and impossible for me due to my driving anxiety (kinda still do tbh lol). got upset and wanted to giveup cause it felt impossible to achieve, but i reminded myself (and still do) of the goal i wanted to achieve; getting my license so i can get a JDM car, specifically a honda accord cl9. and at the time i was talking with someone that liked cars and motorcycles and i kinda decided 'why not', i began looking more at cars, motorcycles and found a new passion/hobby that i found comfort in during the past couple months of hardships. a few months later, in the present now, im going for my final drive to get my license in july and things are looking alright again.

i always have phases where i hyperfixate on certain things and currently its cars/motorcycles that have really helped me get pass the past few months of struggle. even now im still kinda struggling, but i really hope that in a few more months, ill have achieved my goal of a cl9 and able to overcome all the crap ive been trying to overcome. but cars and motorcycles have been my absolute saviours these past few months. helped me keep pushing each day to one day be able to get my dream car + one day learn to ride a motorcycle. though most of my hobbies are an example of this. i just have a habit of jumping to various hobbies / interests for comfort during hardships lol

My childhood was rough. I don't believe this site allows us to talk about what I went through, but I will say there were days I didn't think I would be alive due to my home environment, not mentality. It was knowing I was extremely loved by my Nana and Papa, also knowing life is better than what I was going through that helped me the most. That hardship in my life lasted for 6 years.

The toughest thing I've ever struggled with and still am struggling with is the passing of my Nana. I personally haven't found much help to the grief I have. I do go see a professional, but I just try to find things she loved and enjoyed. We got a hummingbird feeder recently for the back yard. When I look out the window from my PC I can sometimes see one or 2 there. Hummingbirds were my Nana's favorite bird and animal. I like to think she is next to me watching. :)

I also make sure to find Lilacs every season to put them throughout the house. Just doing small things I use to do with her does help. Not holding things in helps a bunch. Don't hold things it. It truly makes it worse.

acura, I really relate to leaning on hyperfixations during hard times - having something interesting and fun to focus on while you tough it out can really make such a big difference! I think it's so cool that you're into cars and motorcycles. Crossing my fingers for you vis a vis the license!!

Domivee, I've been there, and I hope your pain will lessen in time, as mine has. The steps you've taken to process your grief and feel close to your Nana sound like very good ideas. In my experience, a loss like that never really stops hurting completely, but it will feel less overwhelming as time passes. Wishing you the absolute best. <3

Personally, I've struggled with chronic illness for many years now, and my partner has been helping me overcome many challenges related to it. It was my birthday recently and I was sad that I couldn't travel to visit my family like I normally do on my birthday, so instead my partner took me to a local amusement park that I really love, and we had such a wonderful time together. I was so happy and busy having fun, I didn't even notice any of my usual symptoms while we were there. I was totally busted the following days, but it was 100% worth it. Even though I didn't get to celebrate the way I normally like to do, it still ended up being one of my happiest birthday memories yet!

Just having someone there who loves me and wants to see me happy makes all the problems in my life feel smaller. I see all the things they do, big and small, to help me navigate life on a higher difficulty setting, and it's honestly so heartwarming. Forever thankful for having met them. It sounds so sappy, but love (in any form) really will change your life ;w;

im sorry that you had a rough childhood; i cant imagine challenges you went through when you were younger. im grateful that you had your nana and papa during those times and that you knew they love and care for you. grief is a long process, so take all the time in the world. i think its beautiful that you do things in honour of her through doing things she liked. i hope you continue to take care of yourself; take things one day at a time <3
