I don't quite understand how I fall on the spectrum yet but all I do know is that all my life I've struggled so heavily with tone. ESPECIALLY online. It's caused me to become so upset over thinking someone is mad or upset at me when really it wasn't the case and I misread the situation. Me and my best friend started to use tone tags to see if it'd help and I now use them nearly every day. It helps to clarify so much and its been so helpful !
Sometimes I do fear that people will use them to mislead me, but at the end of the day, people who use them to purposefully mislead people (imo) are just bullies, in my head it isn't much different to picking on someone.

Reading this thread has been super interesting :D it's been interesting to read up on everyone's opinions and feelings towards the use of them!! I'll be sure to stalk this thread more to read more about peoples experiences >:3/gen

tysm for your input, i'm really happy to hear that tone tags work so well for some people and its been really interesting hearing everyones different thoughts, i agree!!
tbh sometimes i've regretted making this post because i was worried it was making people upset, so its honestly nice to hear that you find the thread interesting !

//

i guess one question sticks in my mind now that i've read thoughts from the various people on this thread, how do you get into using tone tags? i know that sounds a little silly maybe, but i guess what i mean is. when do you decide to use a tone tag? most people don't use tags at the end of every sentence or anything, so i guess i'm struggling to figure out when an appropriate time to use them is? sometimes i think, maybe i just don't have enough conversations, so it doesnt come up XD
thoughts would be appreciated !

and again, tysm to everyone who has come and shared their experience using tone tags on this thread ! <33

I dont like tone tags personally. I am autistic and have always struggled with tone but they just feel infantilizing to me. if i need clarification ill ask for it, I don't need to be told "hi how are you" has a positive connotation, because when would that ever be negative

I use a couple, mostly /j and /hj for joking and half joking so I can communicate when I'm saying something in a humorous tone. I find more obscure tone tags a bit too confusing tho

I don't usually use tone tags unless someone has specified that they would like them used, since I know they aren't helpful for everyone, but I personally appreciate them when the content of the message is ambiguous or can be read in more than one tone. Not everyone has the same sense of humor/understanding of tone, and if something can be read as hurtful, even if its unintentional, it can be very upsetting for me and turn a happy mood into a low one in a split second. I've noticed this especially in forum games, where there's no longer conversation to reference for context, and the messages are very short and fast, so a comment that was intended as humorous can come off as rude without anyone actually meaning to upset someone (also, when it comes to mental illness/personality disorders, just knowing that the intention to hurt isn't there is extremely helpful for me). I see tone tags more as a replacement for the cues I would normally read from someone's tone of voice or facial expression, and they aren't honestly very different from emojis in the purpose they serve when it comes to online conversations.

I do not think all sentences need tone tags. The ones that do would be sarcasm or jokes, especially if the jokes could be taken as insults. Stuff like that.

However, it will never hurts to include them. If it seems useless to you, then it's not for you.

I have to add as well, please do not use tone tags as a joke. The amount of times I've seen this is way too much

I definitely agree on the “needing to know intent” bit, and it’s hard (for me personally) to be certain of intent a lot of times when it comes to certain jokes/etc.

I have found myself using these more lately!! I think I used to use them not-so-much because I didn't speak so much online, but I do find myself using them more now because it's easier than overexplaining my points and the *way* I intend something (I tend to overexplain even irl when ppl can see my face and body language so). I'm also autistic and I feel like it can be helpful when I'd normally feel nervous that other would misunderstand me online

I definitely don't use them all the time, but I try to if I'm worried someone would think I'm saying something to be rude/mean. if someone else expressed that they wouldn't want me to use them when I'm chatting w them I'd respect it, though, but it would probably lead to me overexplaining how I mean something to be intended more than saying what I'm actually trying to say.

also somehow, for me personally, using kaomoji sometimes like fills in for this? or at least helps me establish that I'm being lighthearted or dramatic for fun. like I'm not an emoji person, but kaomoji my beloved. obv tone indicators are more specific and if I need them I will use them instead, but I just think they're neat

didn't mean to gravedig I was just thinking about this a lot (。· v ·。)

I'm autistic and know I can be very blunt, and this has really helped me communicate more efficiently via text. I'm actually really liking them and I use them regularly.

Here's the ones I use regularly!
/ns - not sarcastic
/gen - genuine
/sar - sarcastic
/nc - non-committal
/srs - serious
/jk - joking
/ref - reference
/lyr - lyrics

I like them and I use them a lot but the people who don't use them correctly just makes me confused, which is a lot of the time..
