In the moon since Gidget had joined the Midnight Lights she had gained a healthy amount of weight and her and Haretail's relationship had blossomed. The energetic tom helped her skittish heart remain calm and reined in. The two had been sent out on patrol together by Ospreystar, and Haretail kept his long tabby tail wrapped around Gidget's, helping her stay focused on him rather than the daunting alleys.

The two had been so caught up in chatter that Haretail nearly ran into the pale grey tom as he loomed over the younger duo. Gidget skittered backwards in an attempt to use Haretail's body to hide herself while the tom simply smiled up at him, "Oh hi! Sorry about that, we were just patrolling." he purred, "Oh wait, we're patrolling."

Ospreystar's words echoed in Haretail's mind then, "Never let intruders onto our territory! You must fight them off unless they express a desire to join us. Even then - you have to be strong and show that we're worth joining!"

Haretail's claws slid out, "What are you doing on our territory!?" the tom demanded. He managed to hold the pose for a few long seconds but soon broke into a chuckle, "Wow, that feels weird to do. But honestly, who are you?" he questioned, claws sliding back in.

The grey tom let out a sigh, shaking his head, "You're pretty bad at being scary." he murmured, "My name is Smaug."

"Oh, well, what're you doin' out here?" Haretail meowed, wrapping his tail again around Gidget's shoulders as the scared molly pressed herself into the tom's haunches.

Smaug shrugged, "I'unno." The larger tom tilted his head then as he judged the other cats before him, "What is a patrol?"

Haretail purred, more than happy to explain, "Oh, our leader, Ospreystar, sends us out to make sure no intruders come and break into our clan! We're members of The Midnight Lights!" he proudly proclaimed, making the title of the lights sound like an ominous, elusive group, "There's only three of us right now - me, Haretail," he put a paw on his chest proudly, "My friend here, Gidget and our leader, Ospreystar! Wanna join us?!"

"Uh..." Smaug look at the two in confusion, "...sure?" He had been looking for an excuse to leave his twolegs...

Ospreystar had been enjoying the sunlight from the old warehouse's roof. She was sprawled out, long legs crossed daintily, eyes closed, and her head tipped up toward the sun. The gentle patter of pawsteps made her open her eyes a little - no one would come here unless directed to by Rabbitstar. Mousestar was still ignoring the molly after she supposedly "lost his respect" or whatever. She smirked at the thought, glancing at the source of the pawsteps. An orange tom was approaching her.

Ospreystar sat up then, waiting for the tom to pipe up and luckily, he did so the moment she had sat up, "Hi there," the tom dipped his head respectfully, "My name is Honeyripple. I was sent here by Rabbitstar to assist you as your deputy."

The leader of the midnight lights took her time gauging the tom and his physical structure. He seemed well together enough, "Alright, Honeyripple... Welcome home."

Haretail and Gidget led Smaug to the old warehouse, taking their time to explain certain traditions. Haretail was the only one to speak the whole time as Gidget couldn't seem to get her fur to lay flat the entire trek back.

When they got back, they used a broken window to leap inside and onto the cool bottom floor. At the opposite side of the warehouse Ospreystar and a stranger had been quietly chatting, however, when they noticed the newcomer Haretail had brought along they made their way to them. The stranger dipped his head to all three respectfully, but Ospreystar simply eyed them all.

"Haretail. Gidget. Who is this?" Ospreystar asked as he and the other cool grey tom made eye contact.

"This is Smaug!" Haretail chirped happily, "He wants to join the Midnight Lights!"

Ospreystar circled the tom slowly, coming back to original spot to sit on her haunches, "This is Honeyripple, your new deputy." she said, tail flickering in Honeyripple's direction, "Why do you want to join us, Smaug?"

"I'unno. Sounds cool." Smaug replied, voice void of emotion, offering a simple shrug of his shoulders to accompany his response.

The leader of Midnight Lights's lip twitched, "Alright..." she trailed off, "What is Smaug?"

For the first time since Haretail and Gidget had met Smaug, a small amount of emotion crossed his face, "I really have no idea," he muttered, head tilted as he thought, "My twolegs used to run around the house with their arms out straight making weird, roaring sounds at each other... and sometimes they'd scratch under my chin and then make my head shake while roaring too." he turned his attention back to Ospreystar, "It was the most annoying part of my day."

Ospreystar let out a deep sigh - what in the world had she gotten herself into? She was surrounded by a misfit, rag-tag group of oddballs and mouse-brains, "Alright." she said again, lifting her head, "You can stay. But your name is now Smogthroat. Not Smaug, forget your twolegs."

Smogthroat nodded, "Of course."

Night had begun to settle across the clan and as Ospreystar lounged again on the roof a familiar visitor came to her. Rabbitstar appeared, sitting next to her, "You're gathering followers, I see. Hopefully Honeyripple serves you well, he seems like a very loyal tom."

Ospreystar rolled onto her back, paws lifted into the air as she watched the stars, "I guess."

Rabbitstar moved so that his head was directly above hers, eyes holding some kind of warning, "You need to find a medicine cat, Ospreystar, they'll keep your clan healthy, and they can talk to us more frequently than you can."

The molly rolled her eyes, "Mmmm..." she huffed, "Maybe I will. Maybe I won't." She quickly rolled back over and on to her paws, "Leave me alone, star-breath."

Rabbitstar sighed heavily, "Fine. Just don't forget what I said."

in the middle of a privately owned forest, left alone by its human caretakers to allow nature to care for itself, sits an old two-story house of stone and wood that has mostly been reclaimed by nature. one half of it’s ceiling has caved in, allowing a tree to grow through it, its floors rotted away to the soft soil and grass beneath it. in what was once the garden, but now no more discernible than any other part of the clearing or forest, a graveyard lies forgotten. a river flows through the forest alongside one side of the house, out into the fields beyond it. it is here, in the depths of the woods, that mud has chosen to set up their clowder.

should one decide to follow the flow of the river out of the forest, they will come to fields of crop or pasture holding horses, or sheep or cows in another depending on the season. beyond the fields, is a large farm, with many barn cats. unbeknownst to the cats, it is the humans of the farmland that also own the forest they call home. thankfully, when they do come to the forest, they never stray very far inside.

if one follows the river the opposite way, they will eventually make their way towards a town. there are a number of clowders and gangs roaming the streets, mostly forgotten by humans. dogs from the town, allowed to roam and run loose, are one of the biggest dangers to any cat, even those in the forest should they stray far enough. the forest, and the farmland beyond it, are popular dumping areas for cats from the town or the city a few miles beyond it, many of whom eventually make their way to the clowder.

the cats of will’o wisps tend to have medium length coats, though neither short and long are uncommon. classic tabby is the dominant pattern, with medium to little or no white. those with medium or higher amounts of white often sport heterochromia. darker coats and tortoiseshells are more common than lighter colour. cats born within the will’o wisp tend to be larger and broad, though the influx of barn cats and dumped house pets that find their way to the clowder mean there is quite a lot of variation.

mud’s decision to leave their home clowder was because of fraught in-fighting, a constant fight for powder that they wished no part in. on their long travels, they met many cats - sometimes gaining companions, though none have stayed long enough to join them in finding the place mud would finally settle on as Home. while they do not know what the future has in store, mud wishes to offer a safe place for future generations of kittens, who will not have to grow up watching bloodshed as they did, and for a much fairer and family-sort of group that they so often wished for as a kit.

the cats of the will’o wisp do not tend to be picky eaters, most having strong stomachs and able to hold down anything remotely edible. the forest offers plenty of choice in prey, from small rodents, to fish from the river, and all sorts of birds. rarely, a broody chicken may even stray from the farm yard and make its way to the forest, providing quite a feast.

while the farmyard dogs rarely cause any trouble - and can, in fact, be a useful source of information, if one knows how to communicate clearly with them - stray and loose dogs from the town can wreak havoc in the forest and the farm beyond it, are one of the biggest threats to the cats of the will’o wisp. otters are carefully tracked, as nesting otters will attack cats who get too close. the forest is home to plenty of foxes, who may go for younger, smaller, or lone cats; while larger foxes may chance taking a bigger cat from a larger patrol. badgers also pose a reasonable threat if disturbed. birds of prey also pose a danger to the cats of the will’o wisp.

there are technically two branches of keepers, though they are ranked together. keepers of blood are trained to keep track of the clan's bloodlines, using symbols that only blood-keepers can read. they must keep the biological sire/s of a litter secret if a queen asks. while they may not reveal any secrets without permission or until the passing of the queen if it becomes necessary for the offspring to known, they give advice to couples if they are too closely related to have kits.

meanwhile, keepers of lore are trained to keep track of the clan's history, myths, and legends.

Clan life is never boring. Especially if you asked the kits of Paradise Risen about it. With eight of them in the nursery, the clan camp was always filled with activity. On this day, some of the kits sat observing the other older cats in the clan.

"Why does Peakbreeze have a scar on his shoulder?" Willowkit asked curiously.

"He got into a fight with rogues," Ravenkit answered ominously. "And he got that scar from them. I heard it was a vicious fight."

"Heard from who?" Hawkkit, who was batting a crow feather around with Coalkit, stopped to ask. Coalkit accidentally smacked him in the nose, and he jumped back with a cry. "Hey! Not fair!"

"Sorry," Coalkit quickly apologised.

"Heard from Peakbreeze himself of course." Ravenkit continued unperturbed. "Sesamepaw told me the best way to learn about clan life is to talk to the older cats."

"But some of them are scary..." Owlkit meowed. "Like Thorn. He seems like his angry all the time."

Willowkit tilted her head. "My mom says he's nice. He is a very... what's the word? Copabale? Leader?"

"Capable?" Her sister Hickorykit helpfully provided. "I remember that. He does a lot for Paradise Risen."

"He's a leader of Paradise Risen after all," Ravenkit meowed, then turned to Owlkit. "Well, if you don't want to talk to Thorn, you can talk to Crowfrost or Birchclaw. They're very friendly."

"Crowfrost or Birchclaw?" Owlkit echoed. "But Crowfrost needs to mentor Sesamepaw, and Birchclaw is either with Thorn or Splotchsun all the time."

"Birchclaw is with Splotchsun all the time," Hickorykit corrected. "They go on patrols together all the time."

"When we become warriors, we should go on patrols together!" Hawkkit, who seemed to just finish his play with Coalkit, interjected. "It would be very fun. Come on, who wants to play with this feather with me?"
