My adopted sister, my protector
I loved her, I promise
Even if we did fight
We became closer everytime
The boy flipped his bangs out of his green eyes, watching as his sister ran across the yard. Her arms swung hard at her heaving sides, mouth open into a scream. "Cicada! Cicada! Ci-ca-da!" Her long, brunette ringletts flew in the wind.
Jace chuckled, leaning against an oak tree for support. The bark dug into his skin, but it didn't hurt. Just pricked. Besides, it was to funny watching the girl. Shayla had always hated cicadas, with their beady eyes and hissing ways. Well, he didn't blame her. Nasty little boogers... And they pinched onto your legs. Eww.
Anywho, his phone vibrated. Looking down at the bright screen, he saw it was from his best friend, Jerry. The boy grinned, flipping his hair again before clicking Open. Yes, they had been texting for hours, but who cared? A thirteen year old boy loved his phone. Especially if it had unlimited minutes. Oh yeah...
So, hw iz it lvn w/ a grl? Jace sighed, glancing up at a shrieking Shayla before going back to his phone. Yes, he hated text talking, and barely understood it, but no one else seemed to find grammer important. Sigh. Oh well. Going back to the small phone, his sore thumbs flew across the keyboard. What do you mean?
As he waited, the teen watched as his sister wrapped her thin arms around another tree with a squeal. Why she reacted that way, no one would ever know. Then his silver phone made his hand tickle. With a slight titter, he looked at the new text. itz nc if shs ur gf wich sh mst b Jace jumped a little. Then his green eye's shot up to Shayla. She was now racing over to him and, without warning, tackled him to the ground. The way she did made their faces about an inch apart from each other. The girl panted lightly, eye's wide. "Their after me!"
But he paid no attention to that. Instead, Jace studied the features he'd never noticed before. Like Shayla had a very few brown freckles speckled on her nose. Or that her green eye's sparkled when she was happy. Or that she had a cute giggle. Or that she- "Jace! What are you looking at? Do I have a cicada in my hair?!' She hopped up again, fratically hitting at her hair.
The teen grinned before going back to his phone. No, she's not. She's pretty and smart, but she's only a friend. Jace shut his phone before hopping to his feet, sneakers squeaking lightly. Shayla trotted over to him, arm's crossed over her heart. Her eye's were narrowed, and they were half shut. Typical angry look. "Keep that up, and I won't keep you up to date with my life!"
There was an awkward silence.
"No more funny stories."
Jace raised an eyebrow.
"I won't tell you about my new boyfriend."
Somehow, that hit the older brother in the stomach. Hard. Ugh, he'd never felt this way before. Well, his little sis never had a boyfriend before. It wasn't jealousy, it wouldn't be. It was... Brother care. Yeah. That's it. Oh well.
"Ick. Does he have any tattoos?"
"Oh yeah."

I, personally, like the ending.

Have you ever had a best friend?
One that kept your secrets,
One that kept your deepest dreams and fears,
'Like a well loved diary?
I did once.
That friend ship that only comes once in a lifetime.
Because no matter the fights and tears,
They always come back
My best friend was a girl
Wrong, back then
But I wouldn't trade her for the world
She was a good person
She was my Shayla
My adopted sister, my protector
I loved her, I promise
Even if we did fight
We became closer everytime
