The rain drenched my fur and puddles sucked at my paws as I pattered down the usual road on my way to meet her. Inside I was happy I'd see her again, but I clenched my jaws together and twitched my lips into a frown.
I rounded the corner and there she stood, her innocent eyes staring into me. I forced an annoyed sigh.
"I'm sorry," she whimpered. "I just can't stand to not see you."
"Whatever," I grumbled, "let's go."
I trotted along silently, avoiding looking in her direction. We passed the park where we used to play as kids.
"Oh, please can we?" she begged.
My heart melted and a smile crept across my face, but I quickly wiped it away.
"No," I snapped.
I pushed away the memories we shared there, and my longing to go back. We kept walking.
At last we reached the main road. She stepped into the taxi, looking back at me with longing eyes as she closed the door. She gazed through the window at me, waving as the taxi rolled away. I stood there, wanting to wave back. A tear rolled down my cheek.
I turned an ran after the taxi, fighting against the blinding rain. "COME BACK!" I hollered, my heart pounding in my chest. The taxi rounded a corner, and I stopped running, my tears hidden by the rain. "I love you..."
I was oblivious to the screeching tires approaching in front of me. The car rammed into me a heartbeat later, snapping my bones and twisting my skin. The pain was unbearable. Everything went dark as my face was ground into the asphalt.
I awoke, dazed, unsure of where I was. Was I in heaven? No, more likely I was in hell.
Then my surrounding became clear; I was in a hospital. I was
alive!"Good morning," croaked a familiar voice from the bed beside him. "I came back for you."
