Isopodstar had come home, bloodied and tired, carrying Badgerbite's body by his scruff. The clan was shocked- one of their most loyal warriors had died. The oriental gathered the clan. A fox had attacked Badgerbite and himself. He defended Badgerbite, throwing himself on top of the other tom to protect him- but it was not enough. The fox tore Isopodstar off of him, which caused the Idol to lose a life, and killed Badgerbite. Helleborepaw hid in the back of the camp as the cats mourned Badgerbite. The young trainee knew everything. He saw Isopodstar brutally kill Badgerbite. But Helleborepaw couldn't say a thing. He physically could not.

And he was never taught the sign for 'murder.'

Was this on purpose? Helleborepaw's mouth quivered with anger and with tears. He was alone. His mother believed Isopodstar. The entire clan did. The oriental was looked so highly upon, much like a god, the thought of him being a murderer never crossed the minds of any cat.

After the ceremony, Helleborepaw slunk away into the gaining shadows. He curled up in the Trainee's Den, Honeypaw sleeping beside him. Helleborepaw liked Honeypaw- she was a bit cautious, but that was always a good trait. He only wished the other cats in Squidclan were as careful as she was. He began to drift into an uneasy sleep, his mind was racing, but his body was too tired to continue.

Doefern was distraught at the sight of Badgerbite's body. Perhaps if she had just gone out herb gathering at the right time, she could have seen the fox and helped the two black-and-white toms. She lay in the Healer's den, her paws tucked under her and her tail curled around her belly. She felt bile rise in her throat. Doefern had met that charismatic tom- Luci was his name, at the gathering. She fell for his looks and charm and regretted every bit of it. The colorpoint had loved once- the tom of her dreams and was expecting that tom's kits. But it was all ripped away from her in one fell swoop. She was okay with helping other cats have kits; she could easily support a kitting queen if anything went wrong. But herself? She couldn't take care of any kits. That gathering night was a mistake. She was an idiot, falling for Luci's charms. Doefern whispered a soft apology to her late mate and kits, hoping they had heard her.

Basatan helped bury Badgerbite, heavy with grief. He had not known Badgerbite much, but losing a loyal clanmate was always tragic. As he returned to camp, he slowly entered the Healer's Den. His paws were sore from digging out the grave with the help of a few others cats. Basatan quickly noticed Doefern curled up in her nest, her eyes narrowed. The white tom cleared his throat, attempting to get her attention, but Doefern made no move. Basatan was becoming worried- the usual upbeat Healer seemed to be in her own little world. He debated whether or not to leave her alone before deciding to talk to the colorpoint. The tom padded towards her, sitting down next to her. "Everything alright, Doefern?" Basatan asked softly. As far as he knew, Doefern and Badgerbite were not close, but she most likely felt the same way he did about it- it was always harsh to lose a clanmate. Doefern looked up at him, the most movement she had done in a while, before croaking out a few words, "I made a mistake." Basatan tipped his head in confusion.
Was Doefern blaming herself for the death of Badgerbite? There was no way she could've made a mistake- she always gave cats the right herbs and always tried her best at everything. Before he could ask, she began to speak again, "When we were at the gathering, I met a tom. His name was Luci." Doefern did not make eye contact. She stared at her paws and continued, "I was enamored." Basatan looked slightly confused but realized what the older Healer meant when she wrapped her tail around her belly. "It was a mistake. I'm too old for kits." Basatan's eyes narrowed, "Doefern, it'll be fine. The kits will be fine. I've heard of older cats having kits-" She cut the tom off, "It's not just that. I can't take care of them. It was all ripped away from me the last time I fell in love and had kits. I betrayed them. I'm too busy. I don't even know where to find Luci. I'm stuck with kits I want nothing to do with." Basatan was at a loss for words. He sympathized with her- but he couldn't understand. He would never have to go through what Doefern was going through. Basatan remained curled up beside her, keeping her company in the silence.

Swiss Miss was stretched out beside the nursery, yawning. She was enjoying the sunlight, a welcome warmth. Despite her thick fur, the chill of leaf-bare always lingered. Inside the nursery, Graveldust was sleeping with her litter, and Wheatwaddle was doing the same. Swiss Miss knew she was expecting kits soon and prayed to the ancestors that she would have at most three kits. She was impressed Wheatwaddle was able to care for four. Wheatwaddle had five kits but took one to live with their father in some nearby clan. Swiss Miss subconsciously wrapped her tail around her belly. She couldn't bare giving up her future kits. Her head lifted as Pinekit dashed passed her, chasing a moss ball. Cedarspeckle chased after her, chastizing her for disturbing Swiss Miss. The Persian let out a soft meow as Cedarspeckle rounded up her daughter, swiftly apologizing for Pinekit's disturbance.

✫oliveclaw decides she has enough of a curiosity about the gatherings to attend this moon, despite her nerves about attending. oliveclaw stayed off to the side, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer volume of cats in the clearing, sort of overwhelming her, and she felt her heart start to race, her breathing start to quicken. however she was pulled back to the present moment by a large tabby-tom who approached her, his kind eyes catching hers. she found out his name was tigerwave, and he sat by her side the rest of the night, helping her feel more comfortable. little did they know that it was the start of something beautiful.
