indentationArtemis released the arrow from her bow. She watched silently as the arrow struck the small doe in the side, exactly over where it's heart was. The arrow made a dull thud sound and the doe went down without a sound. Artemis remained in the shadow of the large tree she was next to, looking out for predators. These woods were often infested with Owlbears. Huge lumbering creatures with an awful temper. Artemis listened intently and scanned the forest around her, looking for any signs of movement. Nothing. Confirming it was safe, with one final sweep around the clearing and the trees beyond, Artemis stepped carefully out into the clearing. She had been watching this doe for over an hour now, watching as it moved away from the others.
indentationArtemis picked her way over to the doe, walking faster than most could while making no noise. That was one of the things she was grateful for her biological father. He had taught her how to step softly and conceal her presence. Artemis inspected the doe, moving carefully around it, looking it over, making sure there was no sickness. The arrow puncture was clean and looked like it had dispatched the doe quickly without a struggle. Good. Peaceful death. She thought to herself.
indentationPicking up the doe's limp body, she hoisted it over her shoulder, stooping slightly under the weight. Artemis began the trek back to the small cabin where she lived with her adoptive human father, Fen. Fen used to be a Ranger as well. He had taught Artemis most everything he knew, but he was still human, and as he grew older he wasn't able to move as well, or complete his tasks and missions. The gold that he was given let him and Artemis live comfortably. So when he was no longer able to complete tasks, Artemis took over in his name. She quickly exceeded him in her abilities, as she was able to see in the dark and sneak around while moving faster than a normal human.
indentationArtemis arrived back at the cabin. She made her way to the small barn near the back of the cabin. Artemis shrugged the doe off of her shoulder onto the table. She cleaned the doe and put the meat out to dry, reminding herself to come back to it later. Artemis rinsed her hands in the bucket of cold water sitting on the counter, drying her hands on a small rag-like towel that was sitting next to it. She left the barn and headed into the cabin.
indentation"Good morning, Fen." Artemis smiled at her father as she walked over and opened the curtains of the small windows in the cabin. "Morning." Fen grunted. He was sitting in his chair as per usual, going through letters that Artemis had brought home from the village last night. "Anything good?" She asked, coming over and looking over his shoulder. Fen grunted again. He was a man of few words. "This is for you." He said, handing Artemis a letter. Artemis took the letter from his hand and looked at it. "Who's asking now?" Artemis had gotten used to him handing her these letters. It was the requests for service from someone. Usually ended up in being payed a fair amount. Artemis ripped the thick paper of the envelope and shook out the letter. "Just the King of Dasfodel." Fen replied unfased.
indentationArtemis nearly dropped the letter in surprise. "Who?!" Artemis asked for him to repeat, wanting to make sure that she had heard him correctly. "The King of Dasfodel." Fen repeated simple, not looking up from the other letters. "Read it, it has his symbol on it. If it's from the king requesting your services, it can't be good.". Artemis shook her head. Requesting Your service." She corrected. "Same thing, you do most of it for me now anyway." Artemis chuckled at his response.
indentationArtemis unfolded the letter and skimmed the contents. "You were right Fen, not good news. The Queen and the two Princes have been killed by a mysterious assassin. King Echomer is asking for your help in catching whoever, or whatever, did it." Artemis summed up the letter. "He is offering 10 thousand gold to you and your party? What does that mean?" Fen looked up at her. smiling. "It means you are going to get experience in working with a team." Fen replied, grinning.
indentation"The King is requesting you. I can't go." Artemis said confused. Fen looked at her. "I am far to old to be involved in all those dangers and perils. You are far better choice than I am. You will go in my stead. I know that you will make me proud." Artemis shook her head, setting the letter down on the kitchen table. "No Fen. Neither of us are going. If I leave, who is going to take care of you? Who is going to hunt and bring back food?" Fen waved his hand, trying to dismiss the fact. "I'll be fine. You go, this will be good for you!" Artemis looked worriedly at the old man. She knew it would be useless to argue with him, especially once he had made up his mind. "Are you sure? You're going to be okay? Could you at least stay in the village while I'm gone, so I know you are taken care of?" Fen nodded, rolling his eyes. "Yes, yes, I will stay in the village if that will make you go. You have to do this, it will be very good for you."
indentationArtemis nodded. "Fine I'll go. Let me go pack my stuff, I will leave in the morning. Dasfodel is not far from here, only 2 or 3 days ride from here. I'm going to take Abraxas." Artemis made her way to her room and started packing. Once she had her bags packed, she went out to make sure that Abraxas had water and hay. Abraxas whinnied as she walked into the barn again. Hey, buddy." Artemis walked over and patted his neck. "You ready for another adventure?" Abraxas nuzzled Artemis' shoulder, bumping his head against her. "Do you know where Xerxes and Goblin went? Hmm, buddy? No? Okay, I'll go find them." Artemis gave Abraxas one last pat on the neck before walking back outside. Artemis whistled into the crisp air. There was silence for about a minute before Artemis heard the familiar pounding paw prints coming towards her from the forest, as well as wing beats. Good, they were together. Artemis turned and walked back inside the cabin to finish packing and preparing.

    intro

When a hawk carrying a scroll found her, a letter from the king asking her for help was the last thing she expected. While Nyx wasn't as famous as a wizard of her skill usually was, she knew her name circulated amongst the upper classes. However a summon from the king could only mean one of two things:

    1. Her recent adventures had not gone as unnoticed as she thought and word was spreading of her skill despite her questionable life choices.
    2. She had made it on some sort of most wanted criminal list on a national level and the royals had gotten tired of complaints about her antics. This was their way to hopefully get rid of her - permanently.

Being as cynical as she was, she couldn't help but lean towards the latter of the two possibilities.
She could care less about the king, or his kids, or the money but one thing did catch her attention. Supposedly the 'best' warriors and magic users had been called upon. Perhaps there would be someone fun to pick a fight with.

And so she began her journey, towards the capital, with nothing but the clothes on her back, her staff and a flute hidden within her robes.

Neriya was doing her daily duties, tidying up the church and checking in with her fellow clergymen. No matter who you were in the clergy you were assigned some form of building upkeep- it helped make sure no one person was strapped with all the work. It was a long-held tradition, and Neri was always overjoyed to chip in. Even after years of doing it, she never missed or skipped a day. Finishing up her sweeping, Neri picked up a faint noise from the main hall. Today it was abuzz with whispers mentioning a letter from the King...

Some time and many discussions later, Neriya had been chosen to heed the King's call. Although her experience was minimal, her abilities were of note, especially due to her heritage. She was nervous, probably too young to be taking on such a case, but when people needed help, no matter who, it was her job to answer their plea. She hoped to return home having successfully found and brought the murderers to justice, proving she was capable of doing more with her role within the church... Maybe get the ability to travel abroad and help even more. Wait, no stay on topic! With a deep breath, Neriya prepared to report to the capital of Dasfodel.

Sarvik awoke to the usual crashing of waves against the side of his boat. At first the action was peaceful, almost settling him back to sleep. That was until the tiefling's parrot, Pandora, awoke him with its usual, awkward scream. With a few clicks of its tongue a couple of pecks to the top of the young man's head, he was finally stirred awake. For a moment he just aimlessly glanced around his room, taking in the gentle shift with each movement of the water below him. It wasn't until his bird chimed "You've got mail!" and dropped a scroll in his lap that he truly allowed himself to wake up.

Climbing to his feet he looked at the letter, opening it with false hope for some sort of ransom letter or scattered mail that could have come to him in regard to his family. With a grumble under his breath, he rolled it back up, staring at Pandora with lifeless eyes before dressing himself and getting ready for the day. Climbing to the deck of his ship, he took in the scene of endless blue ocean and sky, the morning sun glowing dimly behind the clouds. A heavy sigh passed hi slips as he forged a letter agreeing to the terms, hoping for another chance at finding his parents, and of course, his little brother, too.

He set sail, reaching the shore in a matter of days, though it would seem that he was still on time- the letter reached him enough in advance to allow him to travel overseas to the destination. Docking the ship was no issue for the tiefling, and almost defeatedly he left it there, making his was into the city. His parrot sat on his shoulder politely, and he shook his head as he spoke to his pet. "Let's get this over with, shall we?"

    "A great warrior? Here?"

"Must have been sent to the wrong address"

They were clustered around one of the work tables, which wasn't unusual for them. The unusual bit was that they weren't clustered around some new clockwork contraption or arcane mechanism, but a note, a note that filled Bolster's synthetic heart with dread as she approached them.

    "It's referring to me. Unfortunately."

Her guildmates turned to look at her, confusion and surprise present in varying degrees on their faces.

"You all forgot my primary function, didn't you?"

    "Oh, yeah."

    "Right, you were built to-"

    "Yeah, that makes sense."

Bolster sighed, picking up the letter and skimming its contents. She really didn't want to go, but she also didn't really have a choice. If she was being called upon to protect, she had to answer. "I suppose I'll go pack then."

She didn't have much, not much that would be worth taking anyways. Her tools, her shield, some basic adventuring supplies, a project she could work on while she traveled, and some spare parts, because gods knew she'd have trouble finding them anywhere else. With that, she said her goodbyes (not necessarily tearful ones, partially because she was physically incapable of crying but mostly because sadness wasn't really an emotion she felt) and was on her way. To help someone she didn't know, in a place she'd never been, to solve a problem that was most definitely none of her business. Wonderful.

Beyond the Worlds {MP #2}

Postby Popper_Cornz » Sat Jan 28, 2023 3:35 am

MASTER POST

~ Date Is March 5th ~ Late Morning -
Bright and sunny, warm with a soft warm wind blowing gently. Everything is turning green and starting to grow again as Winter fades. The snow near the Capital has melted, so the path into the Capital will be damp and slightly muddy.

Characters are near the end of their travels, Either coming into view of the city, or making their way to the Sun Crest Inn where they will meet their companions.

As the travelers approach the gate they are greeted by three guards at the entrance. They ask for your name and why you have come to the city. Show them your letter and they let you pass into the city, giving you directions to the Sun Crest Inn.

The Sun Crest Inn has a large sign out front, with the name of the Inn written in large gold letters. Inside it is warm and cozy, there is a fire burning in one of the corners across from the main counter. To get to the Inn's rooms you go through a hallway and up some stairs to the second, third, or fourth floor. The adventurers are all staying on the second floor as all the rooms have been reserved for them. There is a stable beside the Inn that you can pay for a stall for horses or other mounts. There are stable hands there to take care of your animals, make sure to be kind to them and maybe tip them if you want extra care for your mounts. The Sun Crest in is an animal friendly Inn, they allow any animals that are well trained and will not disrupt other customers or drive away business.

indentation Artemis slowed Abraxas to a halt. The white and black dappled horse whinnied and shook his head, snorting. Xerxes, a large black wolf, let out an indigent huff as he bumped into Abraxas' back leg. Goblin hooted from where she sat on Artemis' shoulder, clicking her beak down at the black wolf. Xerxes let out a light snarl. "Cool it you two. We are almost there, the city is just over this hill." Artemis rolled her eyes at the quarreling animals. She had never met creatures with such a grudge against each other as Xerxes and Goblin. Xerxes huffed again and looked away to his right, searching for any signs of trouble.
indentationArtemis nudged Abraxas back into the light trot. Once they crested the hill, the city came into view. Huge stone walls surrounded the Capital. There were stone towers along the inside every 500 yards or so across the front wall. Inside Artemis could see human soldiers moving around, keeping watch for any intruders or other dangers, such as Dragons, they were common in this area. Artemis looked down, making sure that Xerxes was still with them. Not that she was worried about him getting lost, more so picking fights with other creatures that would require Artemis coming to his rescue. For the most part the large wolf could take care of himself. Artemis wasn't worried for him, so much as others who crossed him. "No picking fights you guys." Goblin hooted softly and nibbled at Artemis' pointed ear. Xerxes huffed darkly. "That means no going after other dogs or people's pets, Xerxes." Xerxes snorted and grumbled softly. "Don't make me put you on a scrap diet, you silly wolf." The large wolf's head popped up and his ears laid back, but he growled, letting Artemis know that he would honor her wishes.
indentationAs the four reached the gates of the city, three guards stepped out to greet them. Artemis dismounted Abraxas, moving closer to the guards. She didn't have her hands on Abraxas, knowing the huge horse wouldn't go anywhere without her. The guards looked at her suspiciously. "Not often we get Elves in these parts. State your name and purpose here, Wood Elf." Artemis nodded and nodded her head to each of the guards. "My name is Artemis Anogwinn, I am a Wood Elf Ranger from the East. I have traveled for 2 and 1/2 days to meet with King Echomer, to help him solve his problem." Artemis replied softly. "I have no ill intentions towards your king." Artemis added.
indentationThe guards look her up and down. One of them tightened their grip on their sword and Xerxes stepped forward, a low growl rumbling in his throat. Immediately the Guards had their weapons ready. Artemis sighed heavily and turned to Xerxes. "Calm down Xerxes, it's okay, he was just adjusting his sword. You are fine. He's not going to hurt me." Xerxes backed down, sitting back on his haunches, still alert and tense in case something did happen. Artemis gave him a comforting stroke on the head, and he leaned into her touch, still focused on the guards. Artemis turned back to them, they were standing at the ready. Artemis waved her hand trying to signal them to relax. "He won't hurt anyone, don't worry. He is just very protective of me. Ever since I saved him as a pup, he has insisted on protecting me. He won't hurt anyone unless I say. I'm here on business for King Echomer, Got this not three days ago." Artemis handed the lead guard the letter that she and Fen had received.
indentationThe guard glanced over the letter, skimming it. He held it up to the sun, making sure it wasn't forged. "Well, everything seems to be in order, You may enter. I was told to tell you adventurers to head to the Sun Crest in, near the center of the city, big sign, you can't miss it, that is where you are supposed to stay." Artemis nodded, dipping her head respectfully to the guards. "Thank you for your help, sir." The guards stepped aside to let her pass.
indentationArtemis moved into the city, making her way through the crowded streets. It was made easier by the fact that Xerxes went ahead, growling and clearing a path for her. Artemis shook her head, but was thankful for the large wolf. Eventually Artemis found the inn. There was a huge sign out front with Sun Crest Inn written in golden yellow letters. Artemis patted Abraxas and whispered to him in Elvish to stay put. She motioned for Xerxes to wait with Abraxas and protect him. The large Wolf huffed in agreement and sat back on his haunches. Goblin sat on Artemis' shoulder and was going in with her. The small Screech Owl nipped at her ear, letting her know that she was still there. "Yes, I know you're here, Goblin. You are coming in with me." Goblin hooted happily as Artemis scratched her under the beak.
indentationArtemis pushed open the door and made her way inside the Inn. It was warm and cozy inside. Artemis checked in and made her way up to her room, making several trips to bring her stuff in, but not unpacking anything. Artemis paid for a spot in the barn for Abraxas to stay in. After putting Abaxas away and making sure he was fed and watered, tipping the stable boy a couple of gold coins to care for him. Xerxes followed her inside along with Goblin who was still riding on her shoulder. Artemis sat down at a vacant table and ordered some food and a bowl of meat scraps and bones for Xerxes and Goblin. Now all that was left was waiting for the others to show up, or come down. It looked like she was the first one to arrive at the Inn, but she couldn't be sure.

Arriving the city was nothing short of boring to the tiefling, something about being on foot after sailing the open ocean for months always left him stumbling and awkward. A bitter sigh passed his lips as he made his way to the main gates, pushing loose strands of long hair back behind his pointy horns. Red eyes darted up to Pandora, sitting delicately on his shoulders. With a nod between the two of them he finally approached the gate, greeting the guards wiht a sly smile and a tip of his nonexistent hat.

"G'mornin' gentlemen. I am 'ere on account of your highness." Sarvik mockingly bowed to them, glancing up with a cocked brow and an enticing grin. "I thank you all greatly fer considerin' an ol' pirate such as myself. A pleasure workin' for ya boys." There were some confused glances exchanged between the guards, almost uncertain of whether or not he should even be allowed into the building. With a hearty laugh and a pat on one of the men's shoulders, they seemed to finally relax, offering directions to the inn. With a large smile pressed along his cheeks, he waved to the men, face dropping the moment his back was turned to them. The parrot on his shoulder seemed to notice immediately, nudging his temple. In response Sarvik groaned, offering a half-hearted smile to the bird.

When the finally made it, the tiefling could think of nothing but how claustrophobic it was to be in a building- even one as big as this one. With a sigh he checked in, unpacking a single small bag with a few items into the room before heading back downstairs. The only things he kept with him were the sickles on each hip and a small bag of currency tucked away neatly under his coat. He found himself most comfortable by the fire, leaning into a chair and staring into the flames. "I miss the ocean already, 'Dora.." His sadness was responded to with a peck, and he laughed lightly in response. "I know, I know. Wer' still on'a mission, I ain't forgot. Hopefully these others are good as ther' racked up t'bein'."

    entrance

Nyx was the first to arrive at the capital. But did she enter? No.

Keeping a good distance away from the gates, she frowned at the guards in distaste. If she wanted to get into the capital, she would have to announce her presence and then there would be no going back. She didn't like that, since she still had not made up her mind if it would be worth sticking around.

She could disguise herself as an animal and slip in, but then she would have no information as to where to go or what to do and figuring that out on her own seemed like an unnecessary hassle.

    So she waited.

Her patience payed off when a pretty wood elf rode up to the gates. Nyx watched as she loudly spoke to the guards revealing her identity and purpose. Suncrest Inn. Smiling to herself, she cast a spell. Shifting into a crow, she took flight, silently following the elf through the crowds towards the inn.

    - Nyx uses shapechange. She is a crow from this point on. -

It didn't take long for her to realize that the inn was pet friendly and so she flew in, confident and unhindered, choosing to remain in disguise so that she could scope out exactly who she'd have to be dealing with. There was no need to rush and find her room - it wasn't as though she had much to unpack after all. There was, however, an issue - she was hungry. She couldn't order food as a crow, and shifting back into human form and counterfeiting coins didn't seem like the best option here, so she did what she knew best.

Swooping down from where she had so far been perched unnoticed, she stole a piece of meat that the elf had ordered and flew away to place some distance. Perching innocently on top of the fireplace, she started pecking at her prize when she noticed she had company.

A tiefling and his parrot were sitting by the fire. Staring, she found the face familiar. She had encountered this man before - she knew him. Sarvik she thought placing a name to the face. I'll deal with that later she thought to herself as she continued eating the meat.

Because of Neriya’s poor comradery with her home stable horses, she had to take a day of the two-day trip on foot. It wasn’t easy, and she often thought of giving up, but she kept reminding herself why she had to do this in the first place; to help. It kept her going until she could catch rides along with other travelers- and thankfully, this last group was headed to Dasfodel as well. Approaching the capital’s gates, Neri thanked them for bringing her this far. Fishing out her letter from the King, she waited to approach the guards. She shivered, pulling her cloak tighter around her arms. “Hello, sirs, I’m here to um...” Chuckling nervously, she shoved forward her letter. She stated her name and hoped the letter gave them her purpose. They allowed her in and gave her directions towards the inn; it wasn’t much of a hassle and Neriya thought it might be because of others having arrived here before her. Okay, let’s hurry and find this place!

Since Neriya got lost a few times, it took her longer to reach the Inn. Stepping inside, she took a deep breath and tried a small smile. It was warm, and the chatter from the customers helped put her at ease. Neriya checked in and found her room. She didn’t bring too much with her so it was easy enough to plop her things down and head back down.

Some crow snatched some meat right off a woman’s plate, eagerly taking it to the fireplace to nom on. Although it felt as if that little animal stared at someone before continuing their meal. Little guys gotta eat too, she thought, deciding to let the bird be. Was this usual for a bird in the capital? Shaking her head lightly, she wondered where to wait. Maybe there? Taking a seat across from Artemis, she fiddled with her hands underneath the table. “Hi, uh I’m sorry about that bird...”
