Northstar and her patrol returned to the clan. They were beaten and wounded, their furs mangled and covered in quickly drying blood. A meeting was called. “Our clan is under attack”, Northstar announced. “I was hoping I wouldn’t have to worry you. They have been showing aggression for a while now, but today they have shown their true intentions.” She lowered her head and took a deep breath before continuing. “They murdered Dumpling. A brave knight and friend of many. They have shown no mercy.” She stood up and puffed out her chest, holding her head up high. “They will continue killing!” A few worried gasps came from the gathered crowd. “They will murder out maids and muses, they will steal our supplies and make us starve to death!” She saw anxiety in the eyes of her clan. “They are a clan of evil, ruthless cats that won’t stop no matter what!” She looked over the crowd, giving them a minute to let her words sink in. “That’s why there is only one thing we can do. We have to fight back. Attack them before they storm and annihilate us. Whiskered Away!”, she shouted. “We are now at war.”

Northstar made her way to her usual gathering place with the head knights. She couldn’t help, but smirk. Everything was going according to plan. In truth, she never heard any rumours about their enemies. She suspected they were perfectly normal cats, but it was better to colourise her story a little bit, to convince the unconvinced. They were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Whiskered Away was growing with every day and they needed the space. Dumpling’s death was the perfect catalyst. Sure, cats have died before, that happened on patrols. This death was a symbol - an attack of the enemy on the patrol of their leader. This was an obvious act of aggression. North didn’t wish for Dumpling to die, not at all. In truth, she didn’t really know him and felt very indifferent towards him. He was just a cat among many other cats. However, she was going to use his sacrifice to it’s full extent.

Whetley and Shark followed her. Whetley was worried and, as Northstar expected, started proposing a peaceful solution and negotiations with the other clan. Northstar shook her head sadly. “I wish that was possible, my child. I would like to avoid further deaths. But we’re not dealing with regular cats. Our knights are keeping watch over our neighbours and I have been receiving reports of vile, dreadful behaviours coming from their clan for a long time.” Whetley’s worried look only intensified, while Shark was nodding along in agreement. “I will spare your ears the details. I am not unreasonable. We will take in all cats that will surrender and let me tell you, getting them away from that clan will be an act of mercy.”

Whetley was left behind, with nothing but her own thoughts to accompany her. She didn’t know what to think of all this. Was this really the best way? She always wanted to solve things without resorting to violence. She was the only cat in the clan that refused to hunt mice because they were too cute and she felt sorry for them. But sometimes you couldn’t avoid killing. Cats had to eat. Was a bloodless solution possible in this case? She was going to become the leader soon, she had to start considering what would be best for the clan, not only what she wanted. If Northstar was right about their neighbours maybe she should go along with the plan. Her eyes glazed over with tears. Would she have to make those decision once she took over the leadership role? That wasn’t the life she wanted.

The head knights gathered to receive further instructions from their leader. “We need to be prepared for their attacks to come at any time, but, as I said before, we also need to take the initiative.” Northstar spoke with resolve and confidence, slowly walking up and down between cats, looking right into their eyes, trying to convey her feelings with more than just words. “Their lands are vast and lush, plenty of prey to catch and space for our quickly growing clan. We need it.” She sat down, her shin was raised high and her fluffy tail wrapped around her paws. “We will weaken their border patrols. They should have their greatest warriors, so be prepared. Once we finish them off, the rest should be easy.” A flame flared in her eyes. “Crush them. Take no prisoners.” Nightfall interjected. “What about recruits? You said that we could recruit anyone who will not wish to fight.” Northstar gave him an exasperated look. Night started to annoy her recently, being all supportive and altruistic. He used to be such a quiet and obedient loner. She liked him more back then. “I suppose”, she said eventually. “Anyone who is willing to fight against their own can join us.” Night wasn’t satisfied with that answer. “What about those who can’t fight. Kits and pregnant mollies?” North rolled her eyes, but only internally, remaining professional in front of her knights. “Of course. We do not want unnecessary casualties, especially among the innocent.”

Tensions grew high in the clan and the atmosphere was very nervous. It especially affected the Wildfire kits who became pages this moon. They had to leave the nursery, their safe place and go under apprenticeship of cats that were basically strangers to train so that they could become knights and join the war effort. It did not motivate them. Thoughts of failing their classes on purpose crossed their minds. Luckily, some of them managed to skip their first training because a fire started in the grounds of the camp. Dry, fallen leaves helped the fire scatter and spread quickly and burn down many of the dens. Swiftmoose and Larkspur fall, trying to stop the flames and help others escape. The clan is saved thanks to a heavy rain starting to fall shortly after the start of the flames. There are no signs of what might have started it, but it is blamed on the enemies. Another reason to hate them and another reason to fight back. There is no chance it could have been subconsciously started by one of the kits feeling especially strong emotions. Noone would ever suspect that. Noone except for Wildfire.

In fact, Daypaw is so terrified of their future they want to leave the clan and they are not the only one with such thoughts. Anteye, a gentle, calm and scared cat comes to the realisation that this clan can’t offer her the peaceful and safe life she desires. Wildfire kisses Daypaw goodbye, knowing that they will be safe under the care of Anteye. Anteye leaves to seek her fortune elsewhere, taking Daypaw with her.

xx↳ In the blink of an eye, Lyrescreech's patrol lost sight of Fudgetuft when the hunter lost his footing and tumbled down a rocky slope - dust clouds obscured everyone's vision until they found him in an injured heap at the slope's base. Hawkstrike and Popcornbounce carefully moved down to meet him - the rest of the patrol waiting at the top felt their hearts seize when the two cats' would momentarily skid down the steep incline whenever they lost their balance. When they reached him, Fudgetuft was thankfully alive, but suffered many scratches to both his hind feet and hips. After he was assisted home, the medics tended to him with +1 blackberry leaf, +1 broom and +1 burnet; they also ordered him to rest for two moons.

xx↳ Excusing himself to investigate an abandoned twoleg hut with the strong scent of rat inside, Copperburn squeezed his way inside through a small crack found in the rotting wooden walls - he neglected to resister how the old wood groaned at the intrusion. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw his prey's fat little bodies dart around in the dimly-lit den and went straight to hunting. One mistimed pounce ended it all after he accidentally slammed against an unstable pillar that made the entire den collapse on him before he had time to scream for help. It took nearly all day for his Clanmates to recover his battered body from the decimated structure...

↪ Mockingbirdstar's patrol marches into battle with the remainder of the rogues that have caused so much bloodshed in their home. The clan cats are driven by the righteous need to avenge their fallen, and to protect the remaining members of chaosclan. The battle was long and hard, Mockingbirdstar tempted to signal for a retreat at one point, but they eventually won and chased out their opponents at long last. | [ short story & battle results below ]

Mockingbirdstar felt himself panic as he saw the battle ground swell with cats, thinking the rogues came back with reinforcements and that he wouldn't be able to fight in his condition. He swayed uneasily on his feet, everything around him became blurry as black dots started to cloud his vision. When his heart felt like it was going to burst out of his chest, he collapsed.

Memories of his life started to swarm in his mind: kithood, his days as an apprentice and later a warrior with the thought of leading his Clan far from his mind. He saw himself and his beloved Cloverwish during their first love struck days that eventually led to them building a family, and a frail smile made his way on his muzzle as he recalled the joy of seeing his newborn kits in the nursery for the first time.

Blackbirdshriek helped bring bring him back to a moment of clarity, his brother frantically shaking his shoulders and yowling for Mockingbirdstar to wake up and come back to him and the Clan. Mockingbirdstar instead looked past him, seeing that the rogue reinforcements he initially feared were just cats of The Fallen, who were were looking straight at him and then bowed their heads in respect once he acknowledged them in the field.

One cat strode up to the ginger leader, their presence oblivious to Blackbirdshriek, and they touched their nose to Mockingbirdstar's forehead. All at once, the leader felt his spirit leave his body for the final time and he rose to his feet with a new surge of strength. He looked back at his Clanmates and his brother for the final time, his eyes brimming with tears before he left with the rest of his ancestors to his new hunting grounds.

xx↳ Blackbirdshriek yowled until his voice went hoarse, in the back of his mind, he knew Mockingbirdstar was dead, but he was holding on to the thought that maybe these wounds were taking longer to repair. Foxglow eventually had to drag him away by the scruff, her blue eyes round with sorrow both for him and for their fallen leader. Blackbirdshriek stayed quiet long after, lost in his own grief, to the point where he couldn't bring himself to tell the medics about the serious gash they found on his side. They were respectful of the scout's space, tending to him with +1 burnet and +1 cobwebs as gently as they could. After some discussion, they agreed that he would need one moon of rest to recollect himself as well.
xx↳ Quetzalshine bore heavy wounds to his right hind leg, left front leg, and to his nose ridge, making his normally pristine white pelt into a horrific painting of battle. The medics went straight to work, giving him +1 daisy leaves, +1 dandelion, and +1 cobwebs for his injuries. To ensure there's no chance for him to develop an infection, they ordered him to rest for two moons.

↪ Thistlepath's patrol were caught in a landslide after a recent leaf-fall rain made the ground into a wet, mushy paste. after all of his cats were accounted for, Thistlepath immediately led everyone home to inform the leaders to keep everyone away from the area for now. As a result, ChaosClan will only be able to send out 7 total patrols next moon instead of 8.
xx↳ Ferretspike sustained a lot of bleeding injuries to her nose and side; she'll need a collection of +1 daisy leaves, +1 dandelion, and +1 dock leaves - for a full recovery, she'll also need two moons of rest.
xx↳ Blizzardbird was lucky to only open a minor scratch on his left shoulder; he'll only need +1 dock leaf poultice smeared over the injury.
xx↳ The father would shortly grow to curse his luck when he learned that his daughter, Stratusbird, was in critical condition with serious wounds to her right eye, belly, and nose. He paced outside the medics' den as they tended to her battered body with +1 elder leaves, +1 goldenrod, and +1 honey. Once her condition was stabilized, Chivewhisker left the den to inform Blizzardbird that she would live, but that she would need to rest for three moons since much damage was done to her body. Blizzardbird nodded somberly, padding past dark-pelted medic to sleep beside his daughter in her nest, his thick tail wrapped protectively around her like he used to do so when she was a kitten.

She felt a little flustered as the dark brown tom helped her to camp, where she was certain her mate was waiting; Cloudpool sighed in frustrated affection as he prepared some +1 hawkweed and +1 honey for her cough, Dappleleaf joking that she didn't mean to become a frequent patient for some easy private doting. With another sigh, Cloudpool gave her ear a lick and asked that she fully rests for one moon this time.

Moonpaw was still alive, but trapped underneath a rogue as the cat had her pinned her to the ground. A rare, hot rage burned inside of Harestar at the rogue's cruelty and he barrelled into the other cat with no ceremony. The rogue screeched in surprise, his caterwaul alerting the rest of his band out of hiding and turning the clearing into a battlefield.

Moonpaw was in such a state of shock she couldn't even bring herself to stand, much less run to safety after the rogue lost their grip on her when Harestar attacked, she felt terrified as she tried to focus on one of her Clanmates - the adults she looked up to and felt comforted by were replaced by enraged warriors who were engaged in the heat of battle. She whimpered as she caught a glimpse of Reedpaw and Minnowpaw, they were so scared, and she had tried so hard to defend them all...

A paw crashed down next to her ear, jolting the young molly to move. She quickly clambered to her paws, tripping over her own feet as she dodged past warrior and rogue to the relative safety of some thick leaf fronds. She whipped her head back to the battlefield and felt her heart drop as she caught Harestar fall lifelessly fall to the ground like her denmates had. She felt overwhelmed, her first battle being a far cry from the tales of glory Rippleshade and Grey used to spin.

With much hesitance, Moonpaw fled, trying her hardest to ignore the waves of guilt that ransacked her for not joining the others in the battle. What she could do was find the nearest patrol to come as reinforcements, that would surely bring the battle back in their favor.

STORY NOTES
─ Wrenpelt sulks in the healer's den, tired of bedrest and weary with grief. Featherfall, his one regular visitor and object of his affections, spends the duration of her visit venting about her feelings for Fogwhisker. Wrenpelt's mood sours further when he overhears Softlight and Badgerstripe discussing family plans with Honeyfrost. Surrounded by happy couples and whole families, Wrenpelt has never before felt so alone.
─ During their combined training session, Pebblepaw attempts to show off her climbing skills to Firpaw, but is knocked from a high branch when she's spooked by a nesting bird! Cinderstorm calms down once he sees that Pebblepaw's alright, but the stoic Blackberryfur cannot seem to stop shaking. The training session over, Firpaw and Blackberryfur join Cinderstorm in taking Pebblepaw to the healer's den. Cinderstorm gently probes Blackberryfur about her past as they walk.
─ Betonypaw is given permission to attempt her warrior's assessment. Eager to tell her best friends, she rushes to find Darkstone and Stormchase having a snow fight in the clearing. Amused, Betonypaw lets them battle it out, and breaks the news once they've finished dirtying their fur. Darkstone and Stormchase drag her off to celebrate!
─ In the nursery, Pumpkinface and Crowears talk quietly, so as not to disturb the pile of kittens asleep on top of a snoring Daisystem. There's a sudden racket outside, and the kittens begin to stir. Before either queen can tell the noisy cat to hush, Fogwhisker comes running through the den entrance and gleefully announces that he's expecting!
─ Bramblingpath takes Birdflower on a guided tour of SpruceClan's forest. Framed by gently falling snow, Birdflower is charming, playful, and strikingly pretty. They part ways when the weather gets too harsh, but Bramblingpath finds herself flustered just from thinking about the encounter. Bewildered, she wonders if she's getting sick.
─ Mintfur discovers two cats while exploring one of the lesser-used mountain trails. Their names are Barley and Wolf, the older one says, and they are travelers searching for something on the other side of the mountain. Worried about their safety in the coming storm, Mintfur suggests they come spend the evening with SpruceClan. Wolf bristles, her pride wounded, but freezes when Mintfur dryly informs her that she'll die in the brewing blizzard without adequate shelter. The deputy makes his way back to camp with two grateful (and one sheepish) tagalongs.
─ During a final evening patrol, Ivystar picks up the scent of two unfamiliar cats. She considers tracking the scents, but with a blizzard surrounding them, Cardinaltail quickly persuades her to abandon the idea. The patrol turns back towards camp, but not without openly worrying for the lost travelers. They make it all the way to the cave mouth before Lightningsky stops in her tracks and cries out in horror─ Lilycloud and Sheeptuft are both missing!
─ The blizzard doesn't settle until the early hours of the morning. Drooping with exhaustion after patrolling until she could walk no more, Ivystar keeps her sleepless gaze trained on the horizon. She almost doesn't believe her eyes when a tiny white figure appears, but a closer look reveals the figure to be a frost-covered Sheeptuft─ sobbing, shivering, and very, very alone. Chest tight with dread, Ivystar knows without asking that Cricketpounce has just lost another daughter.

--The new kits are welcomed by all, many visitors coming into the nursery after the loss of the moons past. There are many who vow to do whatever it takes to keep the new ones safe, never wanting to feel the fear of the alligators or the fear of The Dark Crows again. Mockingbirdstar's death leaves a hole in the clan, for more reasons than one. Darkfang is increasingly and visibly upset, many older members of the clan wondering why; after all, he had only been a member for a couple short moons, not nearly long enough to develop a strong relationship with the leader. Yet, they are distracted with the events of the moon, not many giving it much more than a passing thought.
--Foxglow takes her journey to the Moonpool, missing Primrosecloud more than ever, wishing she had her by her side. She feels lost, unsure if she should have even accepted being leader... Should it have been her in Mockingbirdstar's place? Did she serve her purpose to the clan? If she couldn't keep her leader safe, how was she going to keep the rest of her clan safe as leader? Foxstar emerged to the clan feeling nervous and unsure of herself, the uncertainties of her clanmates not helping either. Koalafoot, a newcomer, senses the air of darkness around the new leader - and while she doesn't fully understand the clan's mechanics yet, Foxstar finds herself seeking Koalafoot's company often, the pair talking from sunset until sunrise often. Even when she lacks sleep, Koalafoot's presence makes her feel more rejuvenated than she has felt in moons. Slowly, the uncertainty ebbs away...
--Quartzheart has his own doubts, shaking off the offer of deputy towards Silverdance. He can't, not after losing Agatewhisker. He doubts if he even wants to remain the scouting captain, but after talking with Chance, agrees to keep going. He's a good leader after all, and one that many of the younger cats trust.
--When Kiwituft's daughters become apprentices, he approaches his brother about taking over their training, passing their other apprentice's to different mentors. Thistlepath isn't walking as energetically as he used to, the pain in his joints creeping up on him. They both knew it would be a hard leaf-bare, nearing their retirement age. Still, they want one last time to pass on what they know to family, going to their leaders before Limekit and Avocadokit's apprenticeship ceremony, requesting the training of the pair. It is a time to hold loved ones close, they say, and their request is granted somberly.
--Blizzardbird is freaking out over Stratusbird's injury, worried that it could get worse before it gets better. She is nearly never alone, and the young warrior welcomes the presence of her family by her side during her recovery. Blizzardbird, Cirruspatch, and Whirlwindhowl take turns sleeping by her side, never leaving the scout alone.
