"I hope to spend many more with you."

↬ prompt: A special little encounter between Orchidsway and Firefly, about ten moons ago! right before their relationship takes a turning point <3
''Trust me, I bet you'll win the race,'' Hazy amber eyes seem to bubble with excitement, ''You've been practicing forever! Wouldn't you agree?''
''I-I'm not too sure about that Pomelo.'' She fiddles with a single loose berry, raising her light paw away, revealing a trampled carmine bead. ''Some cats are just… fast… faster than me,''
''Aw, Orchid.'' Those eyes seem to lose their fluorescent glow, ''At least promise me you'll try your best, promise? ''
She releases the tight breath tickling inside her throat, closing her eyes, she whispers in that quavering voice, ''Of course, I promise… just… don't be disappointed, I don't even know who I'm racing against.''
Who am I going against?
Pomelo offers a small wink, a single close of one eye, '' I think you can beat them…''
Pomelo's voice seems to be drowned out… a constant ring in her ear seemed to invite her, calling her louder…. and louder. Her gaze skims the wooden planks, rising high in the sky. Her head shifts around, searching… there was something… wasn't there?
A rustle calls her forth, and she leans forward, squinting through the darkness surrounding her.
A pair of blue eyes stares back at her, the figure of a cat loomed over the hills, the fabric of clothing flying as her gaze met his. The figure runs, fleeing.
She twists around, meeting Pomelo's gaze, ''I need to go, and you should head to sleep… it's late.''
''Orchid–''
And with that, she dashes off to the hills, wonders braided into her head, but yet still chasing that figure in the darkness. That spy?
–
''You better win that race… tomorrow son. You're going against that liar's daughter. You're competent to win, aren't you?'' The growl is soft… quiet.
''Yes papa.'' Came the fragile whisper, ''I'll try.''
''You lost… all the other competitions! You better win this one– Now get out of my sight!''
She flinched back, away from the huge wooden door… stained with the vibrant colors, a special gift from the builders. Her heart seems to skip a beat, throat dry, as she wanders away. He wasn't a spy, of course he wasn't.
Could there be other competitions happening tomorrow, right? She wasn't going to have to face this cat…. A cat whose father was… terrifying, angry, and… mean. Who'd scold him if he ever lost.
Could it end like that?
–
The world seemed to spin, spiraling out of control. It was time, the time that kept her wide awake… the race.
Against… him. Firefly. That was his name… not the spy she thought he was.
His gaze meets hers, the last time before the race ended. His mouth opens, voice hoarse,''Good luck.''
She exhales a sharp breath, echoing, Good luck.
But she could see that terror laced in those blue eyes, yet deep within she could see his determination to win. The way his eye was always drawn to that one cat in the crowd, his dad.
''On your marks, get set….'' There is a short pause, ''Goat!''
Firefly takes a step forward, but halts as the crowd seems to howl with laughter. His face is neutral contrasting to the smiles in the cats.
''Alright… for real this time! On your marks get set… Go!''
And they were racing through the fields, running for those precious seconds with the gentle breeze flourishing into winds. In step as they ran, the crowd chanting behind them.
The finish line was there, just a few more steps, but then she remembered the door. That father as he snarled at his son, the determination… that cat needed to win, he needed the win more than her… nothing had ever seemed so clear.
Her pace slowed.
Win Firefly, Win.
She watches as he rushes past, flying across the checkered line. His blue eyes wide, as he turns back, just for that second. The confusion. The surprise. It was all so clear in every move.
She takes a step forward, touching the finish line right after him.
The cheers from the crowd grow loud, rattling the ground. She shoots him a glance, and he returns it.
In the air the words seemed to carry, Thank you. He knew it was on purpose. How?
He approaches her from behind, breath tickling her ear, although he whispers, his voice gentle. ''Thank you.''

↬ prompt: The first Holliday season Bearmask and Apple spent together Apple was feeling homesick. Though she’d never regret leaving her kittypet life behind if it meant staying with him, she still missed her mother and the wonderful smells and decorations that filled the two-leg den she grew up in. Getting a bit sad she spent most of her days in her den instead of spending time with her friends, the queens including her sister-in-law Spottedcry. Being a good sister, she let Bearmask know what was going on and suggested bringing some of the two-leg den to her to help with it. Bearmask got to it quickly, making his way to the nearby neighborhood where he’d found Apple those moons ago. Rummaging through the trash, his nephews Honeymilk and Milkjam helped him drag a few things home. They found a colorful blanket as well as a few broken ornaments and ratty tinsel. Once home they dragged a fallen evergreen in and leaned it against the stone wall at night while Apple was sleeping. Together and through great struggle which ended in all cats involved being covered in sap they decorated the recently fallen tree with the tinsel torn in a few pieces and the broken bobbles, topping it with a piece of sparkly trash they found while searching. Bearmask woke Apple up that morning by wrapping the blanket around her, the scent of pine soaked into his fur as well as the spices that got stuck to them in the garbage. Apple was so moved by his effort even if it didn’t look exactly like she remembered she cried, cuddling with him in the blanket in front of it all morning and enjoying telling him stories about her life which made her homesickness feel better, just having him by her side enough.

"vipersong," seafoam yawned, lazily rolling over into the snow. "are we going or what?"
vipersong glanced over, tail tip twitching. "yes, yes, you don't have to be so impatient." she ran a paw over her ear, shaking her fur out so she could groom it down again.
"what are you even doing?" seafoam sighed, watching her from a fresh, new upsidedown angle. "I'm right here. I already know what you look like."
"that's not the point." vipersong rolled her eyes, twisting around to make annoyed eye contact while she groomed her tail. "not that you'd care."
she paused, frowning slightly. "and is that... ice, on your fur?"
seafoam glanced back at her flank. "looks like it, yeah."
vipersong shook her head, finally getting up onto her paws. "why?" she trotted over to poke her ice coated fur. "how?"
"we live in the freezing snow, what do you expect?" she rolled herself onto her paws, yawning again.
vipersong gave her a look.
"alright, fine, I fell in the lake." she stretched, giving herself a shake. tiny crystals of ice flew down into the snow. "can we go now?"
"what?" vipersong was making quite an interesting face. seafoam snickered a little.
"you fell in the lake and just stayed wet all day? in this temperature?"
"mhm." seafoam flicked her tail, trotting off into the open snow. "a little ice never hurt anybody."
her pace was cut off by vipersong tackling her nearly straight into a huge clump of snow.
"heyyYYY!!" she blinked in surprise, trying to get up indignantly. but vipersong was already on top of her, licking the ice out of her pelt.
"you're going to freeze to death." vipersong muttered between strokes. she gave her a brief look, glancing away quickly. "stupid."
seafoam stuck her tongue out. "I could've been sparkling in the moonlight. this is a loss for both of us."
vipersong rolled her eyes, swatting her gently over the ear. "well, I'm sure your eyes will still look lovely, twinkling like the stars."
"oh, barf." seafoam laughed. "get offa me, you big sap."
vipersong obliged, after a few more licks, stepping back to examine her work. seafoam scrambled to her paws, shaking out her fur again. less ice fell out this time, but she did hit her mate with the huge clumps of snow that had gotten stuck to her pelt after being TRAPPED in that snowbank. she grinned.
"now hurry up and let's go." she knocked her playfully, probably messing up both their coats, and began trotting away. "and I'm not waiting for you this time!" she called back over her shoulder.
vipersong shook her head with a sigh. but she smiled, running ahead to pass her. "you won't have to, slow slug!"

the silvery crescent of the moon sat in the sky like the twisted smile of a robbery gone right, the stars twinkling like diamonds in a deep blue sea of velvet: the true spoils of war. the snow had only just begun to fall, like the frozen crystal tears of something much bigger than the cats below, but was already starting to carpet the ground in some numbing blanket embracing the earth, much to the vexation of the lonely cat that sat in the falling snow, their fur sagging and dampening thanks to the white flakes that danced their way down from the clouds above.
toulouse found himself sitting in the silence for... how long had it been? long enough for the sun, which was high in the blistering sky when he had initially set out, to the now faint glow of the moon. he wasn't doing much, he wasn't even trying to stay out as long as he did, he just lost track of time as it so often did when he was on his own and lost in his own thoughts. despite how late it was, or early, depending on your outlook, toulouse didn't have it in him to head back to the camp just yet, although he couldn't exactly tell you why he didn't want to venture back.
his fur was getting whiter by the second as the snow slowly enveloped him. a shiver was sent down his spine as he tucked his paws underneath him.
he didn't hear the approaching pawsteps crunching in the snow until there was a body next to his own, their warmth radiating out of them, not only melting the snow that had settled on the tips of his fur, but the darkness of the nights seemed a little lighter, the air just that little warmer and the twinkling of the stars ever more vibrant as the beginnings of a race of celestial bodies was dawning.
the scent of pomegranate and bergamot filling his nose as the other cat snuggled closes to toulouse' body in an attempt to stave off the harsh cold. it wasn't a surprise to toulouse that this particular cat had come to seek him out. especially when it had been a decent few hours since the lilac tortie had shown their face around the clans camp.
the pair just sat in a comfortable silence for a little while before the usual cheerful lilt of frog's voice even hit his ears as they began to speak "you can't stay here, y'know" he purred, his tail curling to wrap around Toulouse' own "it's late and it's cold, and you're missing out on the sweet treats..." they accentuated this by nudging their friend.
toulouse couldn't help but squirm under their... well, their crush, for the lack of a better term, and sighed. the cold didn't help the ice that wormed its way through his very veins, especially when he would literally do nothing else than just sit here under the stars with his little kitty love, and frog was never the wiser, were they?
he didn't really take in his company's words, still under the soft illusion of their daydreams of having a relationship with their crush on frog and the infection of pomegranate softly coaxing his words "it's all pretty romantic isn't it? the moon serenading the stars and all that... reminds me of you..." he blurted it out before he could stop himself, even if he wasn't used to being romantic, ironic, considering he hailed from the country that was literally home to the love capital of the world.
he immediately stiffened once he registered the words that slipped through his fat, stupid excuse for a mouth and going by the tensing of the body next to him, frog that hops on lilypads caught the same sentiment before toulouse had practically sprang to his paws. now, toulouse wasn't the most open of people but to the cat that he had a seemingly incurable infatuation with? mortified.
he bowed, apologising profusely, although fruitless as frog didn't appear to be moving, frozen as much as their surroundings, covered in their icy drips and sparkling snow.
toulouse was just about to run and scamper like the rats they so often hunter, fleeing further into the depths of the forest, away from the warming flames that frog had so generously invited him to to join in the holiday festivities, it didn't help that tou felt like they had just completely shattered the illusion of their cool, collected and impassive mask of a personality while simultaneously breaking the only real friendship he had made in the clan that he was just willing to give up and venture back to the docks and get on the first boat to just about anywhere as long as it was far away from pleasance.
he was a whiskers away from completely being enveloped by the strong jaws of darkness of a forest in winter when frog called out to him, the southern drawl more prominent than ever as a deep desperation laced their words "wh-what? toulouse... stay, would you?" it didn't take long for frog to recover, their voice back to it's regular calm. they were still sitting in the same spot that toulouse had left them in, the spot next to him was painfully absent of snow making it clear just who was sitting next to them.
tentatively, tou stalked back to the lilac mink, and returned to his position, not nearly as relaxed as he once was...
well, not until the familiar warmth became a comforting weight as frog leaned their body next to toulouse' and their head over his shoulders "you should have told me..." and although he couldn't see it, there was a small smile gracing frogs face as he hurried his face deeper between toulouse' shoulder blades, sapping even more heat from him as the cold slowly started to creep away.
there was a silence after that, not nearly as cozy and warm as the one previous but anxiously, toulouse tested the water of their new... relationship? by curling their tails together, entwining them together I the snow.
--
it seems like forever ago, almost twelve months to be exact, but it was still so embarrassing for toulouse to think back to then, almost a bitter-sweet memory of embarrassment and just an overwhelming love. despite this, he still feels the same about frog that jumps over lilypads ever since he stepped off that damned boat, and fell right into the godforsaken paws of frog and his stupid little clan, ruining all his plans.
well, I suppose getting a new start was exactly what he had ventured here for, getting a partner that was was sweet as frog was just a bonus. don't tell them he said that though, he doesn't need any more reason to parade him about than he already does.

↬ prompt: he was here.
under the sheen of the starlight, his sides heaved, the faint outline of bruises marring his jaws. cuts from crafted claws split the side of his cheek, his flank riveted with flowing, scarlet ribbons. as he shifted, his wince splintered the silence, only stifled as he buried his claws into the soft moss beneath him.
he was here, he was alive, he was breathing.
but at far too high of a cost.
“arezo.” the whisper broke on her lips and she fought to keep it steady. if she faltered now, stars, she wouldn’t be able to put herself back together. she swallowed hard, gently settling down beside him. “i… i came as soon as i heard. stars, i- are you alright?”
“ah, governess.” gold eyes caught hers, weary, yet never without that sharp glint. the same steady glint, unchanging and undying, since they’d been kits. a lopsided grin curved his jaws. “you worry far too much. hells, i think the king worries far less than you do.” his brows lifted. “i’m fine. better than fine, actually. besides, i told you i’d be back…”
she knew him too well. and beneath that flippant confidence, the war had cost him. oh, it’d cost him. the little signs. the tiny tense of his muscles, the flicker of uncertainty in those eyes, the way his claws never fully sheathed, the masquerade and political games he so easily fell into. too easily.
but it was the fire in his eyes that screamed at her. it never faltered, but there was something different about it. in the twist and tango of those flames were ghosts. something haunted, something sacred, something scarred.
“this isn’t the court, anymore.” her paws caught his, the joined warmth steadying her. but he flinched, shoulders stiffening in that same way it’d always had when he was cornered. “it’s just me.”
“i know, i just-” his breath was shaky, raspy. “i apologize. i forget. sometimes, i forget i’m not…”
he was losing himself.
she knew it’d happen eventually. to play a role he did, to masquerade as one of them, and lead a double-life - aristocrat by day, rebel at night - it’d doom anyone. fracture them. but to see it… it hit different. somewhere between her heart and her soul.
“you know the north star?” the question sprung to his jaws, hesitant. “it-”
she snorted softly, tail wrapping around his shoulder, gently squeezing. “it always points north. i know.”
his grin was weary, but something about it… more genuine. “but have you heard about the south star?”
her paw pressed tightly against his. a rerun of an earlier conversation. a snapshot of two winters past when they’d built an empire off the ashes of another. then, she’d let him go. let him promise her that he’d always return whole and healthy. let him be the fire the rebellion always needed.
a fire slowly running dry, extinguished by smoke.
now it was her turn to rekindle that flame. she rested her head on his shoulder.
“does it always point south, too?”

↬ prompt: a bluemoon sonata… they were wandering beneath the starless skies, tainted of dark auras and a murder of little ravens. fluttering footsteps ever-so fleeting in a half-hearted tango.
their voices were a soft, murmuring lullaby - swollen and dilated with abafando… of, low, beauteous tones and touches of soprano, uncertain and nervous.
for tonight, was far from a bluemoon night, brimming with romance and the glamour of mystique allure… but of a bloodmoon.
the kingdoms of faerie had collapsed and the fairies had come.
they had come like the bellowing cry of a zephyr into a nightmare, an enchanting spell no soul would awake from in an evermore to come.
and the whispers- oh… the whispers, they are terrifying. the shrill ebb of ethereal altissimos, like the wispy silks of veiled phantoms, as the lyrebirds sang. their cries haunting.
for those cries… they were mimicked, an imitation of something else. or someone else.
and her little drummer tom, heard it all.
the enthralling blemishes upon his features contorting to the lilt of the voices, voices that faded to the falling of the faint moonlight.
“we should run, my love.” the cadence upon the roses of her lips was bittersweet, a remorse that never seemed to dwindle, and instead blossomed like a giant zulu. “it’s not safe here… they are coming.”
she knew all-too-well what was coming. from him… and them.
his touch had the faded essence of a coming bliss, as he titled the delicate curve of her features to his. a heartbroken mess as her gaze wavered.
“look at me, eileen.” she could barely meet his eyes. “i have to stay… you know that right?”
“w-why?” a broken lilt, the earthy and whimsical woodland fragrance of his curls seemed almost strangling, a sweet scent that never seemed to leave. never.
“do you know what they’ll do to you once they get you? they’ll throw you in the prison-” she was shaking, now. a desperate mess of broken heart strings, unravelling to the pluck of a violin splintered upon the earth. “use you to mine for their jewels… you’ll die.”
silence.
“jae, we are going to have kits! they need us… they need you.[i]”
[i]“but at least they have you.”
and they came upon the two star-crossed lovers… and wrenched the little drummer tom from her dainty grasp.
✦✦✦
she still dreamt of him to the nuance of their bluemoon sonata.
such a sonata gone silent upon the roses of her lips as the zula withered into nothing since that night. her little drummer tom was gone - the sonata only brought hope.
hope that was pointless.
and beneath those starry skies, her daughter was breathed to life. a little, beautiful snowdrop, dainty and crestfallen as she wept, periwinkle tears staining her blushing cheeks.,
eirlys.
and from there, a lullaby hushed her little, dainty snowdrop… rocking her to a place of dreams and fairytales that would forever live in the delicate fortress of her mind.
lavender's blue, dilly, dilly
lavender's green
when i am king, dilly, dilly
you shall be queen:
who told you so, dilly, dilly
who told you so?
'twas my own heart, dilly, dilly
what told me so.
✦✦✦
i hid her to keep her safe.
✦✦✦
'twas her own heart told her on the twelfth turn of the moon… and it told her to run. it told her there was something terribly, heartbreakingly wrong. but she didn’t.
for her little drummer tom was before her once more, bruised and broken… a hopeless mess as she was as they dragged him into nothingness.
“j-jae? h-how-”
enthralling yet startlingly unfamiliar, the scars that had marred his features had been unfurled like carmine serpents, scarlet as he staggered. his breath was rancid, his dark, midnight curls falling apart and tangled, parts shaved till the pale skin was revealed.
the devil seemed to lurk in those rosy and zula eyes, breathing and cursing them as he staggered towards her. unsteady. trembling, the ravens of her curls laced themselves into his, taking his frail and broken frame close. familiar.
before he snapped.
“make it stop… make it stop-” nightmares bloom in his eyes like swallowed nightshade, foam upon his lips as the ivory of his claws sank into her neck. his grasp was unbearingly tight - tight… as he shook her, the little drummer tom replaced with a devil. one gone insane. “MA-”
“jae! jae, please- stop.” her voice trembled, like flora and fauna teetering on the edge of being kissed out of existence. “you’re hurting me.”
and the little drummer tom was back… his face so, so crestfallen with the realization he had become a monster while he was with the worst of them.

Someday, Beechbreeze will go to a winter paradise where snow coats the ground during the solstice celebrations, falling down in fat flakes one could catch on their tongue. Snow-birds would sing their winter songs as he strolled through snow so deep he could lose a knife dropped in it.
But instead, he was stuck in this city where the only snow was sleet and the only thing covering the ground was swirling mist. On the coldest days, the harbor froze over in thick sheets, and humanoid kits ran across the ice like it was a playground. The freezing wind burrowed into his coat like rot grubs on a corpse, and the ice-slick streets couldn’t be gripped on by his claws.
On his coldest days, he always thought of Hearthstone, that wonderfully determined tom. He was a monk, though he called himself a “cultivator”, and took a path Beechbreeze had never heard of. He talked about “golden cores” and “refining” and “breakthroughs”; it all sounded very complicated.
Hearthstone never talked about his past, but Beechbreeze never did either so that was fine by him. Sometimes he would catch himself gazing into the cultivator’s sage-green eyes, and he would gaze back, though always hesitant. He’d catch himself and shake his head, as if he were trying to banish thoughts from his mind. Did his “cultivator” path forbid him from romance? What a sad life that would be, falling in love but never being able to follow through.
—-
It was an odd day, as it was snowing. True snow, not just sleet. Reedy burst out of the den, cheering in excitement, with Blizzard following not far behind. Even Thistlechase could afford a smile.
“Hey, Hearthstone! Wanna go on a walk with me?” Beechbreeze asked.
The tom looked at him, faltering a bit, and blinking. He could feel every aspect of his body; of course, inner sense was one of the steps to cultivating the spirit but it never quite felt like this. He was pinned to a wall by the sweet tom’s voice.
“Yes,” he said, surprised he could get a word out.
The snow lightly settled on the ground, like flour dusting a baker’s table. Beechbreeze gazed everywhere. Hearthstone gazed at Beechbreeze. He was bright-hearted, jewelry sparkling whenever it hit the light, chatting about something or another that made Hearthstone’s heart raise.
He wasn’t sure if he was ready to fall in love, but Beechbreeze could make it easy.
