Suddenly, they missed their friends very badly. Guilla realized just how alone they were in the sweeping wastelands, and gently began to shuffle out from under the merchant's grip. Their rattling leaves and timid side-steps seemed to rouse the other trio from their glare duel--two heads turned towards Guilla in an instant.

"Um. Nice meeting you?"

“Now where are you goin’ this time of night?” The Merchant shifts to face Guilla, raising an eyebrow.

While the Merchant’s back is turned, the Fetch jumps to his feet with all his hairs and the spines on his cactus joints bristling. He makes a move, but the Merchant’s hand-tail comes down on him… square between his staghorn stag-horns. The Merchant is stuck full of needles.

“OUH.” He wheezes. “Ooooh. Oh. Oh. Ow. Ow!”

“Serves you right. We nǝǝd to have a little cha-ɐ-at.”

“Look—The deal’s off, kid.”

“Who are you calling ‘kid’?!”

Just as the two are distracted again, Guilla makes a clean escape. Behind them, the sound of bickering is mercifully overtaken by the wind in the yawning canyons of rubble. But just as they turn the bend and leave the other wermz out of sight and mind, something cuts through the murk:

“’Ey, kid! You still there? Come find me again... I got a job for you.”

“That’s what you say to every werm you meet!”

“… Yeah, well, I got a job for you, too.”

And just like that, they’re back to it…

The trio trudge back from the Wastelands, caked in sweat and sand, muscles aching with the weight of their journey. After what feels like walking for days straight, they finally see it--the tallest few buildings of the meager city of Eaden rising above the tapering hills of dust. Relief floods them, as cool and refreshing as low-hanging clouds. The trio stands a little taller, adjusting the packs on their shoulders and around their waists, invigorated for the home stretch of their trek. They crest the last hill; quite literally it was all downhill from here. Guilla blooms--they were looking forward to lying down with the greenhouse's overhead misters on, rela--

And in an instant, their relief withers away when they see... him, an imposing silhouette now standing between them and the embrace of the city.

His parting words echo in Guilla's mind--

“’Ey, kid! You still there? Come find me again... I got a job for you.”

It seems like he had been the one to find them.

"Uh, Guilla?" Inia murmurs, turning to find them fruitlessly cowering behind Pennyroyal's much smaller frame. "Do you know that werm?"

Guilla doesn't answer, not braving a glance from behind their face buried in their claws.

"'Cause...they seem to know you."
