And yes you are right! Dream Theater defo was missing here and is such a big band especially in the prog scene! I just tend to go with the flow in this thread an add bands here and there - it's working so so well now, very happy with that!!
I listen to very little prog metal but I'll look through my playlist and list some songs below!!
Looking forward for some suggestions from you!
Oh and also: Blind Guardian is a great band indeed! Also very well known in the Power Metal scene and so dang influential for so many other bands, I do love their medieval style!!
Those are my Prog Metal favorites that I can think of right now lol (you probably know all of them but Imma try haha):
π€ Come Hell Or High Water - Native Construct
π€ Sorceress - Opeth
π€ Break The Silence - Seventh Wonder
π€ Hide And Seek - Seventh Wonder
π€ Flying Whales - Gojira
π€ Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
π€ Oroborus - Gojira
π€ And Plaque Flowers The Kaleidoscope - Ne Obliviscaris

I know a lil bit of Dream Theater! It wasn't them in specific, but I've seen Mike Portnoy play live with the Neal Morse Band and remember checking the other bands out a bit afterward. I'll have to listen to Cockroach King! I'll have to listen to poorturtle's reccs, too!
Do you know QueensrΓΏche? I love their stuff - Silent Lucidity and Is There Anybody Listening are such cool songs. I gotta dip my toes in prog metal more in general though,, it's so cool, I just never am very good at digging around in genres much πAt the same time though I'm sure there's more that I'm just not thinking of yet... I'll have to dig around and update on what I find
TOOL and A Perfect Circle are obvs classics, so's Puscifer though, Maynard James Keenan just does cool stuff in general
edit: Oh Cockroach King is a BIG FAVE and I've gotta come back and think of songs it reminds me of better when I'm less sleepy. This is SO GOOD I gotta listen to more Haken
OOH LOVE TO SEE COCKROACH KING APPRECIATION THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY
I LOVE GOJIRA AND SEVENTH WONDER!! Opeth and TOOL are classics although some of their songs are very hit or miss for me (eternal rains will come is a bop). Surprisingly I don't listen to native construct often and almost forgot that band existed! But I love them as well, definitely a fave. I'm very into metal bands that mix several styles and instruments in their music (no wonder why prog metal is my favorite subgenre). And I'm not that familiar with QueensrΓΏche, although I've heard of them before and I know they're very influential, gonna give them a listen soon
I saw mastodon was already in the playlist but I need to mention it's the perfect mix between prog rock and prog metal, i think there's only one other album that I have a similar feeling about: Murder of the universe from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. King Gizz's metal tracks are always amazing and I know infest the rats nest is more praised by the fans but murder of the universe is pretty good too, and it's prog metal, I'm actually listening to altered beast right now.
When it comes to Haken, my favorite albums are Affinity, Vector and Virus, my personal recommendations are Veil, Puzzle Box and The Good Doctor from Vector, Messiah Complex (which is a rework of cockroach king, although the original is still better) from Virus and 1985 from Affinity. Their recent albuns have a little bit more of electronic and I saw some people complain about that, but overall i don't think it's something bad
I recently started listening to Obscura, a death and prog metal band, they're pretty cool, I personally recommend their most recent album, A Valediction. And Caligula's Horse, is another somewhat underrated prog metal band, reminds me a bit of dream theater and mastodon, my song recommendation is Marigold but honestly I could recommend. Everything from them. There's also Porcupine tree that I'm not sure if I should include here since they're very inclined to prog rock too, and Watchtower, another very influential classic.

Hello to everyone! I'm personally a big power metal fan (Powerwolf, Sabaton, Gloryhammer, Beast in Black, Alestorm, ...) because I generally love music that has a lot of energy. I actually got introduced to this genre because a friend of mine was playing Powerwolf in his car. Blessed and Possessed was the album he had on, I believe. Great album!
I used to be super into Ghost but fell a little out of love with them after the release of their latest album. It just wasn't my thing. I still adore their album Infestissumam, though. And you've got to admire their theatrical nature.
Dream Evil is a band I often return to, too. Especially the album Dragonslayer.
I'll be checking out all recommendations later when I find some time to draw. Doing art and listening to metal is always a perfect combination to get work done.
And now
I've been summoned. I've been listening to a lot of power metal since it's another subgenre I'm absolutely in love with, and I noticed no one has mentioned Helloween (which i often spell with an a instead of an e because autocorrector)!! I insist that if you like power metal Helloween is a must listen! Also nightwish (also symphonic metal but I don't think that would be an issue), always lovely to hear female vocals in metal, dark passion play is my favorite album, Γlan is pretty good too. My other must listen power metal bands are Shaman, Blind Guardian that I've already mentioned, Dragon Force is an obvious one, Avantasia, Sonata Arctica, ANGRA, Kamelot, and last but not least, a power metal group with a more celtic/Irish style, Tuatha de Danann
Oh well I just realized I have more power metal recs than prog metal recs
Edit: tuatha de danann is actually more folk metal than anything, but I still recommend them
