“The sun’s dying rays shone off the soft dilute tortoiseshell and the rusty black mollies coats as they lay together, sharing tongues together on the warm rocks above their camp. “Mistfall and Ashstrike have been spending a lot of time together recently,” Willowtail was saying as she twisted to groom her side. “They’re acting all moony, like Thymepool and Sunstripe right after they became mates. They moved their nests right next to each other.” Poppypounce agreed, lemon-yellow eyes flashing with amusement. “Mistfall won’t even talk to me about him,” She huffed, pouting for a brief moment. Willowtail shook her head, a soft mew of amusement rumbling from her chest. “You know Mistfall, she’s always been a little private, especially with these types of matters. She also knows you’re a meddler!” Willowtail teased. “If Mistfall tells you anything, chances are you’d try setting them up!” Poppypounce had a sweet, innocent expression on her face, the expression she used to get out of trouble or pretend as if she wasn’t doing anything she shouldn’t be. “I don’t know what you mean,” She mewed, delicately raising a paw to clean her ear. Willowtail laughed softly, affectionately nudging her friend. “Sure, says the one who’s tried to set me up with Emberslash and Duskheart!” Poppypounce’s eyes brightened with amusement. “One day, I’ll find a good match for you.” She vowed. “Or I’ll match you with someone.” Willowtail watched her friend shift slightly and grinned. “Mintwhisker’s certainly fond of you.” Flustered, Poppypounce ducked her head, smoothing down her chest fur. “Deny it all you want but there’s some kind of spark between you two.” Willowtail continued, watching her friend closely. “You may not want to admit it, but think about it okay? He joined Caveclan because of you.” Poppypounce shook her head, embarrassed. “We’re just friends, Willowtail. That’s all we’ve ever been. Besides, I’m not interested in a mate right now! I want to mentor an apprentice! Matchmaking between you guys is far more fun anyways!” Willowtail shook her head, amused but let the matter go as the pair finished grooming their fur.

“Can you recall which herbs I used for Wildpaw’s wounds?” Cloudpool asked as he looked over the black and white tom’s injuries. The apprentice in question lay still, hazel eyes tracking a bug making its way across the medicine den. His only movement was the slight twitch of his tail as he struggled to stay still. The medicine cat had three kits lined up next to him, watching as Cloudpool worked. “It was blackberry, burnet, and ….” Mosskit hesitated, her face scrunching up in thought, “chamomile?” “Exactly right! Good job Mosskit! All three herbs are very good for wounds like these.” Cloudpool said, approval flashing in his eyes. “How did you get hurt?” Softkit asked with huge eyes. The little molly was crouched close to her brother, pressing into Quailkit’s dark fur. Wildpaw’s eyes flicked to the kits. “Training accident.” He said, flashing his eyes to Cloudpool. “Can I go back to training yet? I’m going to be behind and Splashpaw and Pepperpaw will never let me hear the end of it!” Cloudpool shook his head. “You still need a couple moons of rest, I’m afraid. Fortunately, your denmates are not exactly close to becoming warriors yet. You won’t be behind long, Ashstrike will be sure of it.” Wildpaw sighed, disappointed. “If you aren’t going out, can you play with us?” Quailkit widened his eyes hopefully at the apprentice. Wildpaw brightened a bit, glancing hopefully at Cloudpool. “A game of mossball shouldn’t be too hard on your wounds but be careful.” Larkfeather would keep a careful eye on the group as well. The calico queen came to check on Wildpaw as often as she could, worried about her son. He stepped back to watch as the kits, squeaking with excitement began the game of mossball, thoughtful. Wildpaw would be back to training in no time and it was looking more and more like he’d found himself an apprentice. Mosskit had been at his side when both Hawkfeather and Wildpaw had arrived in his den for treatment. She’d watched as he’d discovered Hawkfeather’s infection and treated Wildpaw’s bleeding. Cloudpool normally explained what his herbs did for his patients but with Mosskit’s presence, he was especially careful to speak in a way that the kit would understand. Her calmness and concern for his patients had impressed him and now that he’d realized that Softkit and Quailkit had no interest in the medicine den, Cloudpool had made the decision that he’d talk with both Mosskit and Morningstar about the possibility of Mosskit becoming his apprentice. “Cloudpool, may I have a word?” Rowanfur’s voice was calm and steady but as Cloudpool looked over at the red tabby warrior, he thought he could see a flicker of worry in her dark green eyes. “Of course.” Cloudpool padded over to the molly who lowered her voice so only the medicine cat could hear. “It’s Morningstar. He’s sick. He wasn’t feeling too well last night but he’s been really weak today.” Rowanfur explained, her tail tip twitching to betray her anxiety. Cloudpool glanced over to the kits playing with Wildpaw. Larkfeather’s dark orange eyes glowed in the medicine den’s dim lighting and as Cloudpool met her gaze, the queen gave him a small nod, assuring him that she’d keep an eye on all four of the young cats. “Please come quickly,” Rowanfur murmured and Cloudpool nodded, leading the red tabby back to Morningstar’s den.

“ Sagestar’s patrol had led her to come across the presence of two warriors who she’d managed to persuade to join Pinyonclan. It hadn’t been too hard when the black shorthaired tom had been curious in the first place. The ginger tabby had been more doubtful but even he’d somewhat reluctantly agreed to join with his friend. The ginger tabby had been named Burnetblaze and his friend, Sootstorm. “Welcome to Pinyonclan,” Sagestar announced as she led the pair back to the camp, watching the pair’s expressions eagerly as they took in their home. Sootstorm’s eyes were bright and curious as he looked around but Burnetblaze seemed less impressed. “This is it? This is where you expect us to sleep?” Sagestar narrowed her eyes, catching the tom’s gold gaze. “It’s safe and warm.” She said, her voice cool and calm. “If you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay here.” Burnetblaze frowned but the tom looked away, towards the center of camp where a gray and white molly rested, her paws tucked comfortably under herself. As if sensing the eyes of the three cats on her, the molly looked at them and got to her paws. After a luxurious stretch, she padded up to the three, dipping her head respectfully when she paused in front of Sagestar. “Greetings, I’ve been looking for you.”
Sootstorm glanced curiously between the pair while Burnetblaze narrowed his eyes. “Do you know this cat?” Sagestar studied the gray and white molly for a moment, before saying, “Do we know each other?” The molly shook her head, amusement flashing in her warm brown eyes. “Not yet, but we will. I’m Fadedmoth. I’ve been looking for you.” At the thoughtful tilt of Sagestar’s head, Fadedmoth continued, “Starclan sent me to serve as your medicine cat.” Burnetblaze made a scornful noise and seemed about to say something when Sootstorm shot him a quick warning glance, quieting him. Sagestar’s gaze didn’t waver from Fadedmoth’s as she considered the gray and white molly’s words. “I’ve been wondering when you’d arrive.” At the words, both mollies grinned, eyes bright. “Fadedmoth right? I’m Sagestar, Pinyonclan’s leader. Let me show you around.” With Fadedmoth’s nod, they padded off together, the pair acting as if they’d been friends for years. Sootstorm’s whiskers twitched as he watched them before he turned to Burnetblaze. “Our clanmates seem fun!” He said, amused. Burnetblaze shook his head doubtfully, eyeing Sagestar and Fadedmoth. “Maybe. Did you hear that talk about Starclan? Ridiculous!” Sootstorm tilted his head curiously. “You don’t believe in Starclan?” He asked. “Do you?” Burnetblaze asked, adding, “Starclan are tales for kits! I’ve never heard anything about Starclan actually talking to cats before we met Sagestar and Fadedmoth!” Sootstorm gazed after the pair for a moment before answering, “I’ve heard rumors but I don’t know. I think these things happen for a reason though.” “Don’t you two want to pick out your new nests?” Sagestar’s enthusiastic yowl grabbed the pair’s attention before Burnetblaze could respond. With one last glance at the ginger mackerel tom, Sootstripe made his way towards Sagestar and Fadedmoth, with Burnetblaze following a moment later.

Backfilling for months -pensive-

Summary: Icy executes his plan and watches the med cats leave, and then asks Carrot for a stroll. Not suspecting anything, Carrot agrees. Once the two are in the middle of the Pine Grove, Icy strikes, telling a stunned Carrot everything he'd heard and planned, including the truths behind Magpie, Stickle, and Fox's deaths. Carrot explains to Icy that all he wanted for Hurricane, Obsidian, and Chesnut was to have a good life in SeaClan, without being shunned due to their familial connection to Ravenwish, the traitor. Icy refuses to believe it and kills Carrot with a well-aimed slash to the throat, impassively waiting for Carrot to come back before he kills him a second time. Tempest, Thunder, Adder, and Willow are to guard the premises, trying to deter cats from approaching; Tempest slinks off, with Thunder trailing him. When Tempest catches Thunder tracking him, Tempest kills Thunder to cover his tracks and returns to camp, unnoticed.

Knowing something was off, Thistle sends Pine, Yarrow, and Winter to track Icy and Carrot. Pine and Yarrow end up catching Adder and Willow and pin them down while Winter confronts her own brother. Icy finally snaps out of his craze and sadly tells Winter he is too late to be saved; he then lunges back at Carrot. Winter intercepts Icy and ends up slashing Icy's throat. Winter tearfully apologizes as Carrot slowly comes back from the second death; Icy tearfully says his farewell, and dies.

Back at camp, Thistle looks at his new kits (by the gathering stud Edith) and has the same realization as Leafwhisker long ago, and announces his resignation from deputyship to the Clan. Carrot thanks his best friend and appoints Pine as new deputy. Sand also resigns from med cat duties, explaining what had happened to Avocet and his involvement in it.

Avocet's rogue group is watching the Clan with growing restlessness.
