The Fetch smacks the back of his paw against the other werm’s shoulder. The merchant barely reacts. He hisses urgently into the merchant’s ear—Guilla only catches bits and pieces, but it sounds something like “we” and “had” and “a deal.”
“Me and my, uh,” The merchant middles his hand. “Associate here, we’ve got a business proposition for little miss Chromatic Aberration. But…”
The Fetch scowls. “It won’t talk to him. As usual.”
The masked werm sniffs impassively. “Hey now. It wouldn’t talk to you, neither.”
“At least I’m still on speaking terms with the Guild. And that half-furred freak.” The Fetch retorts. “If I didn’t know better, I’d reckon he’s gone out because of you.”
“N’aw, now look what you’ve done. You’re gonna upset our guest!” The merchant makes a grand show of patting Guilla’s shoulders comfortingly. The Fetch rolls his eyes, just as the merchant leans in and whispers, through grit teeth: “C’mon, grub. Let’s make a move.”
"I can try to help," Guilla said, allowing themself to be led to the base of the sign. Their leaves rattled in the warm evening wind, as they looked up at the blinding light of the sign and back at the werms.
The ever-grinning werm's eyes crinkled with dangerous delight as they gave a theatrical bow as if to say 'go forth.' Guilla blinked and instead bowed at the orange werm glowing atop the sign.
"Um...hello?" they tried, a single claw raised. "Sorry to bother you, but..."
The werm's eye flicked to Guilla and then back towards the horizon. Guilla brought the claw to their chin in thought. Maybe they were busy? Even as still as they appeared, Guilla remembered the late evenings in Veridas's shop under the grow lights, as the large toothy werm stood impossibly still, lost deep in thought. Or perhaps they were shy? Guilla also recalled the first few times out of their burrow, shuffling through the streets of Eaden timidly until they met Inia and Pennyroyal--
"This...is pointless," hissed the smaller werm. "You are so full of--"
"I can see how you might think that, as one so full of points," the other werm crooned, poking at one of the cactus spines atop the other's head, "But with some patience--"
"Could you, um, go over there for a minute?" interrupted Guilla, now facing the bickering trio. They tangled and untangled their claws together. "I think you're making them nervous."
The large-eared werm sputtered incredulously, but the merchant clamped a paw around his mouth before they could say anything aloud.
"Of course," they said, taking a few paces back with the other werm in tow.
Guilla looked at the werm atop the sign and then back to the trio. "Um. A little further, please? How about just over that ridge?"
They felt the cactus sour, and Guilla winced. "It will just be for a moment," they assured. Once the others complied, they finally turned back to the orange werm, somewhat alone.
"Hello," they said, a bit more confidently. "I'm Guilla."
