- Welcome, traveler. You look soaked to the bone. The old cat before you cracks a yellowed smile, crooked teeth
evident behind his coal-black maw. Come, come. You'll be safer inside than out, after all, winter is coming.
Eastwatch-by-the-Sea itself is an old castle that has stood at what many would consider the edge of the world for as long as any cat can remember. The cats that inhabit its dreary halls have named themselves 'the Watchers' in honor of their desolate home. As dark and gloomy as the once-great castle, the population of Eastwatch is a hodge-podge of travelers, rogues, vagabonds, and trapped traders. Here in the north, it is easy to get lost among the twisting woods and snowy expanse. The Watchers have made it a point to protect those that wander into the Vigil-wood and give them shelter. From there, it is up to them if they wish to leave when the snows begin to melt or take the raven's oath and join the Watchers' brotherhood.
The Raven's Oath, named for the First Watcher (Raven's Blood), is a rite of passage that signifies a cat's acceptance into the Watchers. Most similar to typical warrior cat's naming ceremony, the prospective ranger is stood before the Lord Commander (after training for a period of time under a variety of more skilled, experienced rangers) and is asked if they would like to swear themselves to the Watchers and all that they stand for. If the prospective ranger accepts, they are gifted a new title that they may use in place of their old name if they wish. Many cats choose to use their title as a formal name, while their old name is used in more casual settings.
Regarding ranks, new cats will notice that the cats of Eastwatch are run a little differently than some other clans or groups. To start, the leader of Eastwatch is always called the Lord Commander. To be selected as the next Lord Commander, a cat must have at least three winters under their belt, they must have trained at least two rangers from entry to oath, and they must have served for a period of time as a steward or maester. To the cats of Eastwatch, it is imperative that a Lord Commander understands the workings of each and every position in the castle. The chosen second (and more often than not, the future Lord Commander) is called the First Ranger. Lord Commanders typically serve for life, but it is not uncommon for a Lord Commander to retire back to the ranks of ranger or council member if they believe a successor could better lead.
The healer of Eastwatch is referred to as the Head Maester. They are in charge of the general well-being of the clan, alongside training future head maesters of Eastwatch, typically referred to as just 'maesters.' A head maester may train a good number of cats during their tenure, though it is rare that a permanent successor is chosen until the end of the head maester's life. Once a successor is chosen, they are brought to the center of the Vigil-wood, where the godstree stands. The prospective head maester is told to crawl beneath exposed roots of the godstree. If the old gods approve of the prospect, the new head maester will emerge from the roots of the godstree with a new title given to them by the former maester of the Watch, at which point the old head maester may live out their waning days in peace.
Rangers are the general warriors or soldiers of Eastwatch. They hunt, patrol, and fight as needed for the betterment of the group. Rangers also double as recruiters for any lost souls that have been unfortunate enough to find themselves so far up North. Once a cat is recruited, it is typically up to the ranger that recruited them to take that cat on as a ward, though this is not always the case. The Lord Commander can reassign ward / ranger pairings as needed.
Rangers that are expecting children or those that prefer to stay in the company of youngsters and their mothers and help out are referred to as 'stewards.' They are the ones that reinforce the castle dens as needed, care for the young of the Watch, and they also work closely with the Council to ensure that all cats within Eastwatch know the history of the Watch, as history and stories are all many of them have left here in the North.
The Council are largely the elders of the Watch, cats who have served for many years and have earned their retirement. Some are cats that have been injured in battle or esteemed visitors from southern clans - those that are just passing through but perhaps hold rank elsewhere. These cats are still valuable members of Eastwatch and therefore can be called upon by the Lord Commander to help make decisions for the Watch if need be.
Eastwatch-by-the-Sea serves as the Watchers' base. The castle is large enough to fit hundreds of cats, along with plenty of courtyard space to safely train new wards or young without fear of attack. When hunting, rangers will venture into the Vigil-wood, a vast sub-alpine forest that hides the main threats to the Watch: wolves, elk, and bears. Bears and wolves can not be fought, even by the strongest rangers. To be faced with one of these is sure to mean death for a patrol. More manageable threats include foxes and owls year-round and badgers in the spring and summer.
When not hiding from the many things that are sure to eat or trample a cat, rangers are catching snowshoe hares (3), corvids (3), blackbirds (1), stoats (2), and the occasional fish from the various streams that run through the Vigil-wood into the sea.
The cats of Eastwatch are also pressured by the climate of their home. High up in the mountains, their springs and summers are short, followed by chilling autumns and desolate winters. It is not uncommon for the cats of Eastwatch to be snow-bound for a good six to nine months out of the year. Life in the North is tough and not for the feint of heart, and so rangers are permitted once a year (in the heat of summer) to escort those who do not wish to stay with the Watch back to the southern clans.
