martenfang
she-cat | 41 moons | deputy
location: camp | tags: open
though martenfang's days as a guardian had come to an end many moons ago, the she-cat still slept in the same den as she had when she, too was a tough and hardy protector of the clan. after all, the camp that crescentstar and crescentclan had blessed them with, once upon a time, did not have a deputy's den -- not that martenfang cared in the slightest. as a matter of fact, the cozy feeling of kinship earned from slumbering amongst the warm pelts of her clanmates was something she was reluctant to inevitably have give up someday... despite how cool the alpha's den looked all with its shiny trinkets and gizmos.
the deputy curbed her train of thought, knowing she'd only get more carried away if she didn't get her lazy hide outside to oversee all the early-morning operations. she was sure echostar was still comfortably snoozing among the soft feathers of her nest. but this made her happy. clan leadership was arduous work; martenfang was willing to carry the world on her shoulders if it meant that echostar could get just a little more well-deserved shut-eye.
heading outside, martenfang took a few heartbeats to lick and flatten down a few unruly tufts of her that sprouted from the fur of her chest. at this point, she was notorious for being attacked by droves of cowlicks in her sleep. once she was done, she continued forward with a jovial swish of her bobbed tail. most of the clan was already awake -- good.

tigerfin, of course, had been awake for hours now. he'd already finished all his morning duties, but still hadn't yet eaten. he wanted to watch his clanmates eat first -- well, his leader and the clan's sole queen at least. he caught sight of the latter taking some bites out of a fish before glancing over at echostar's den, just being able to make out the figure of the leader as she scarfed down a mouse from her own personal supply.
he then glanced back at pinecloud, who was taking to whiteflame. whiteflame... sealpaw! many of the apprentices were already awake, and he still didn't see his little brother. and if his little brother wasn't with whiteflame, then that meant he was still asleep. with a lash of his tail the dark brown tabby headed straight for the apprentices' den, ignoring martenfang as she came to approach him. he already knew it'd be some lecture about taking it easy on the young tom.
no. he needs to learn respect, and he needs to learn to act like a future guardian -- not some overgrown kit.

tom | 10 moons | guardian apprentice

sealpaw was still fast asleep, legs twitching and haunches jerking as he dreamt of frolicking about the island, collecting shells between his teeth to bring back to echostar and martenfang. the young tom -- as close to his final guardian assessment as he was -- still only cared about having fun, pranking his fellow apprentices, and eating good, plump prey that was rich in flavor. the thought of actually having to protect the clan every day terrified him.
oh, why can't i just join the elders early? i'm a great storyteller!
all of a sudden, the chubby gray and white tom was shoved out of his big, warm nest. his dark yellow eyes shot open, frantically trying to adjust to the light streaming into the den. "what gives, tigerfin?" he groaned, only half-awake but still on high-alert from the sudden attack. "whiteflame would've woken me up, y'know. y'don't gotta be such a fish-face to me all the time."
tigerfin only shook his head at his younger half-brother before leaving the den without a word. sealpaw scowled. jerk. then, he slowly but surely got to his paws and headed out to the clearing, looking for his mentor.
