After running for what seemed like forever, up a fairly steep embankment, Diesel finally slowed to a stop in a clearing at the top of a mountain. The only thing up there were a few trees and some bushes off to one side, the rest was flat, clear meadow. Mystic came to a stop beside him, panting slightly.
“So…I get a day off from training and you run me up the side of a mountain before dawn?” She asked playfully.
“Sorry about that, but I wanted to get here before actual sunrise.”
“And why is that exactly?”
“Come on, you’ll see.”
He smiled at her, his green eyes sparkling mischievously as he walked towards the edge of the clearing. Mystic followed him hesitantly. She wasn’t very fond of heights. Diesel walked right to the edge and sat, curling his tail around his front paws. Mystic crept up next to him and cautiously looked over the edge.
“Oh…wow….” She exclaimed quietly, slowly sitting down next to him. The view was breathtaking. You could see for miles and everything was lit in the soft glow of predawn light. She could see the river as the only slice of blue cutting through the otherwise brilliant green. She followed it with her eyes and could make out the very vague outline of what might be a city. From the distance she couldn’t tell if it was a new city, or an old abandoned one, but either way it was surrounded by a whispy layer of fog that made it look surreal. Diesel smiled at her.
“See. So was it worth the run?”
“Totally. Its so pretty up here, you can see for forever. How did you find this place?”
“When I first started training to be a fighter, Black was really hard on me. I had a really hard time keeping up with the rest of the group on runs, so I decided to do some training on my own. That’s how I found this place, just looking for places to run. The first time I came it was during sunset, which is also cool, but not as pretty as sunrise.”
“It sounds like you come here a lot?”
“It depends. Sometimes I go months without coming, and other times I come every day. I like coming here when I need somewhere that I can think.”
Mystic nodded and their conversation lapsed into silence as they watched the sunrise. The colors of the land below them became more and more vibrant as the sun climbed higher into the sky. The fog and eerie silence that had surrounded them gave way to bold colors and chirping birds as the sky shifted from a light gray to a brilliant blue.
“Thanks for sharing this with me.” Mystic said with a smile.
“You’re welcome…”
He started to say something else but was cut short by a rustling in the bushes across the clearing. Both of his ears swiveled back towards the noise and he sat perfectly still until he heard it again, louder this time. Both he and Mystic turned to face the bushes. Diesel moved in front of her and snarled deep in his throat as he crouched low to the ground.
“Who’s there?”
The rustling in the bushes grew louder and Mystic mirrored Diesel crouch, ready to help if he needed it.
“I said who’s there?” Diesel growled louder.
A few seconds later a brown dog came slinking out of the bushes in front of them, ears and tail drooped low in submission.
“Please…don’t hurt me.” She said softly, her voice shaky. On hearing her speak Mystic immediately relaxed and started to walk towards her. Diesel moved in front of her, still crouched low. The dog took a step back.
“What is your name?” Diesel growled.
“R-Reya.”
“How did you get here?”
“I…I don’t remember. I…my people left me and I was running. I came up here to get away from…everything down there. I just ran as hard and as fast as I could and I ended up here. I’ve been coming back here at night. I only go far enough to get water, then I come back.”
As she spoke Diesel relaxed his aggressive stance. He could tell from the other dogs body language that she wasn’t a threat. She was actually scared to death of them. Mystic moved around Diesel to stand next to him so she could get a better look at Reya. She was various shades of brown and a light gray that bordered on being white. The top of her back was a light tan, her belly, chest and most of her tail the grayish white color. She was covered in darker brown tiger striping that seemed to fade with the rest of her coloring. Three of her feet were a different shade of brown than her stripes and made it look like she had been running through mud; they had an almost splattered pattern to them. The other foot (one of her hind feet) was the same grayish white as her other markings. The end of her tail was the same color as her brown feet, as was a mask on her face and her ears. Her eyes were a startling shade of neon green. Mystic had thought Diesel had bright green eyes. Reya’s put his to shame. Finally Mystic’s gaze rested on Reya’s neck where she wore a collar the same blinding shade of green as her eyes.
“Why didn’t you just go back to the city? You still have your collar on..you would have been let in.”
“T-they would have killed me. They took me out to the woods and they were going to shoot me. They didn’t bother taking my collar off because they figured I would be dead. I heard them…they let me out of the car and threw one of my toys. I was looking for it when I heard them get out the gun. I knew it was for me. Something had smelled different on the car ride. They had smelled different…afraid. I knew they were looking for me, they kept calling my name but I ran. I ran until I ended up here.”
Diesel looked at Mystic and she cocked her head sideways.
“We can’t just leave her here.” She said softly.
“I know…but Black and Nitro…”
“Nitro wouldn’t want us to leave her here, you know that. Kane and his pack will find her eventually…”
Diesel sighed and looked at Reya, who was still cowering submissively.
“Its okay, we’re not going to hurt you.” Mystic said quietly and she walked up to Reya, her tail wagging softly. “Come on, come with us. We’ll get you something to eat, and then we’ll figure everything else out.” She finished with a meaningful look at Diesel.
“Yea, come on. We’ll take you back to the pack, get you some food, and get things figured out from there.”
Reya wagged her tail slowly at them.
“Really?”
“Yea, the pack will be happy to have you. We’ll figure something out.” Diesel said with a small sigh.
“Thank you.” She said softly as she fell into step next to Mystic. Mystic smiled and bumped her shoulder against Diesel’s who shook his head as he trotted on ahead of them, making sure the path down the mountain was safe, he had no idea how Black was going to react to Reya, but he couldn’t just leave her.
