In an ink black pot is a plum dark plant. They've been there quite awhile. If you pluck up the courage to touch it. Untangle them, bit by bit, from the roots of the duckweed, pluck away the water hyacinth. Brush of the accrued bog elements, use the edge of something to clear the rest of the muck, and hold the pot of stone between your fingers.

You might think otherwise, due to the aggressive appearance of the plant, but it's all intriguing. It's heavy. The teeth are sharp. Sharp enough to bite and draw blood.

Gold flecks look back at you. It's all entirely inanimate, but also entirely arresting. Inscrutable. It holds you in a moment. [i]You. It seems to ask. No, you know it asks. Goosebumps on your arms, hair on the back of your neck rising.

Maybe there was a reason it was left alone.
