She goes first, no hesitation,
"King's pawn to E4" her words soft, slick oozing with contempt as a grin crosses her face.
"Who are ya Sid?"

"You ask me every year." he replies gruffly one could swear his voice was smoky, charred like oak hinted by crisp refinement like a bloody merlot.

"And every year you deliver." she winks "Tell it again, I love when you lose." The word dragging, slow and savored on her tongue as her innocent wide eyes stare into his, hiding lifetimes. "You get what you give." she hisses.

"I am Sidney Edward Pourtier, 5th of my name."
"Bishop's pawn to f5."

"You know that's not what I want. Please tell, why are you the last of your name?" words spoken softly as she places a claw on his pawn.

He sucks his teeth, "Sweetheart...you get what you give, right? It's my turn...Who are you?

"Vie," her eyes narrow, chuckling, shaking her head as she speaks "you get what you give"

"Pawn e4 to f5, but Sidney you already know my name." she smiles, all coyness and naivety before capturing his pawn.

"next question."

"Sidney what happened to that pretty pretty crown of yours? I almost miss it."

"What was it made from again...vines...no...olive branches, and what was it made from again...silver?

"Platinum. knights pawn to g5."

"I gave up my crown, I... lost it"

"Oh not this again Sidney I swear to g-"

"Life is a game..."

She taunts him, "Life is a game nana nana ya ya" moving her paws to imitate his words.

"I thought you wanted my story?"

"Oh I do, just not like this, no more bedtime stories, they bore me."

He begins again,"Life is a game, with winners and losers. I am a loser, once gilded gold, now rusted silver."
"I lost."

"I knowwwwww. Now answer the question."

"I always admired your naivety it made you...cute...like a little sister."

"Jealous? You still lack imagination, stop avoiding the question brother", a smile crosses her face.

He shudders

"Don't call me that."

"You suggested it...you know I'm an empath...and I sense you miss that crown." nods dramatically looking pensive as she clutches her chest to "empathize".


"It's gone."

"oh you don't sayyyyyy," she sputters sarcastically "pleassseee tell me more." eyes rolling

" I was young."

" Weren't we all."

"I was going on my 27th year, a prideful youth. I ruled like a fool, I taxed, I stole, I pillaged, I started conquests and I was victorious."

"I stole my kingdom from a prince."

"ah ah ah not your kingdom, his kingdom.

"I stole his kingdom and when his people realized I was the thief, they came for me... I laid there tied in chains...A King never gives up his crown, but I was no King. I never was. I was a tyrant so handed it to them. I was defeated. I was humbled and became a god. "

"How ironic you stole a kingdom and yet you wore an olive branch, and became a god. The ultimate show of humility." she says with sharp sarcasm eyeing his king and bishop.

"It was poetic. I was a facade of prosperity; a cascade of wealth."

"You were death." The words spoken with disgust "And now you live forever as death, the picture of humility, a decomposing corpse, nothing more, nothing less."

"I need tea."

"How did you become a god?"

"Oh," she clutches her chest theatrically "such a personal question. I don't know if I should let you into my little secret."

"Unlike you, I was born not made."

"Born? Impossible. We all are made from a lesson, a hard lesson."

"Watch out Sid you're dripping your rib sludge on the board."

" Like I said, you get what you give, and I gave the world my blessings and received blessings in return."

"I remember you were once not so lucky, I saw you in the wastes."

"But I was happy. I never faltered, I found joy in service. I followed the sunshine."

"I remember my good deeds. The world will too... I hopped from place to place bringing sugar, spice, and everything nice. I was perfect. I am perfect. And one day I awoke to these wings. My sweetness came back as a blessing and here I am a little spitfire capable of anything. I mean just look at these wings. I am perfect. I was transformed. I never learned a lesson, never did anything wrong. I never failed, never suffered a loss. You admire me for my naivety but I am your superior. I never needed lessons, never had to accept hard truths. I have discovered the truths of life without hardships and by the way..."

"Checkmate."

"It's time for a lesson."

"Please, every year we go through this. I have won."

"And here we are again. What a touching tradition. I'll miss it. The final question..."

"What is the meaning of life?"

" Oh a NEW QUESTION"
"What a stupid question." she spits these words out emphasizing the u in stupid.
Her fiery eyes level and stare at him.
"You were always right about one thing. Life is a game; a simple, simple game. There are winners and losers.
I am a winner."

"Go on Vie, answer the question."

She grabs her queen sliding it slowly towards his king.
"The meaning of life is to win." knocking over his king she smiles in his direction, setting his king aflame.
"Beat or be beaten."

Sidney stands, and as he turns, the toadstools shrivel.

"The meaning of life is to fail, so you may grow."

He walks off, the grass dying beneath his feet.
She sits smiling, unfazed. "SEE YOU IN 50 YEARS!"

"Fat chance Vie! You need more time to fail!"

"I love you!"

"Pardon!" He sputters.

"Stop yelling you're disrupting the wildlife!"

He shudders again, not turning to meet her stare.

"Don't be afraid to lose Vie!"

"I never lose Mr. Sidney Edward Poutier."

[Cyrano]

- vie lokes to bake pie.
- she enjoys the summertime the most
- always migrating to a place where there is sunshine.
- vie also enjoys the beach, partaking in playing in the water sometimes.
- if she ever sees trash in the ocean,she will do her best to pick it up and throw it away properly.
- not only that but she enjoys nursing injured animals back to health, because she was once in their position.
- she wasn't always the mythical creature she is today.
-you can't tell, but she's ancient




-alleged tyrant
-HIGHLY detail oriented
-loves soft fabrics, and silks
-loses to Vie on purpose, she loves the thrill, it keeps her coming back
-can hide anything, but can't find anything
-incredibly light sensitive
- any food they touch shrivels
- often kills grass as he walks which Vie inevitably fixes
- Likes to give the facade he dislikes things but is a big softie
- Loves to lay near trees and spread his fungus
- Ironically hated mushrooms during his mortal life
- loves lilacs, and peony's

Firstly this was so much fun to write, two gods griping at one another is like a married couple griping I love it! I would like to give a special thank you to my partner who bore with me throughout this process as we both brought these character's to life! YOU ARE REALLY THE BEST AND SO LOVELY! I really love "Vie" and Lex, you created quite a character and I am glad you allowed me to "meet" her!. your character building was so nice, thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone and doing our art piece I loved it the moment I saw it, I felt it really captured their characters so much! Thank you to the staff for reading our entry, it was a pleasure to write and I hope you enjoyed it!
