[ as you enter the cave of memories, you are drawn to a relatively new mural, it's unique paint is still clean and bright. It depicts a red wolf and a cat you do not recognize, embracing as magic swirls around them. It is clear they are affectionate with one another. this scene puzzles you, as wolves and cats are not known for their kindness to one another. ]
        "good morning!"

          Image

[ you notice a lithe, black cat with unusual white coloring approach you, he smiles as he greets you. Dropping down to sit beside you and stare at the puzzling mural. He smiles softly, if you didn't know any better you'd say he's smiling almost fondly. ]
"I see you've found our latest edition to the cave. Beautiful work isn't it? Foxglove truly outdid himself."

[ you nod in agreement, but your confusion over the events depicted outweighs any appreciation you might have felt for the technical beauty. "What is this event? I thought wolves were the mortal enemy of cats." The black cat laughs and nods gently. ]
"Yes that is true, they used to be our enemies. Now they are our allies, thanks to the love of a shy wren and a morose wolf."

[ you are even more puzzled by his response, but allow him to continue. ]
"Would you like to hear their story? It's quite a tale."

[ you nod enthusiastically, which earns you another chuckle.]

          Image

"Well then, settle in my friend. For this is a story of true love."

wrenclove didn't know mushroom picking could be so eventful.

elmclan's healer's den had run out of mushrooms, eiderdweller had politely requested she go out picking because none of the healers could spare a hand. illness had been rampant in recent weeks, and there were too many sick cats and not enough paws to help. this whole situation worried wren, but she took the job nonetheless, eager to help wherever she could.

now, she was moving fluidly through the trees, eyes and ears perked for any sign of their brown, inconspicuous tops. she was on the trail of what she believed to be a particularly promising mushroom, when a piercing howl split into the evening air. wrenclove dropped to the earth immediately, trembling in terror as she flattened herself.

        wolf

the howls continued, and wren continued to tremble until she listened closely to the cries. those weren't the cries of a wolf on the hunt.. it was the cry of a wolf in.. pain? the shrieks were accompanied by whimpering and low mournful notes. and just when wren was beginning to think that she might never move from her position, the crying ceased entirely. odd. wrenclove rose, shaking, from her hiding place and looked around. that was when she caught the scent of blood. that sharp, metallic scent set her fur on edge. every common-sense instinct told her to turn and hightail it back to camp, but something pulled her in the direction of the blood. something she would not know how to describe until far later when the puzzle pieces had clicked into place. the string of fate pulled her, and she was helpless to resist as she gave in to her desire and began winding her way cautiously towards the source of the smell. she entered a small clearing, and within that clearing, she finally got her first glimpse at the creature that had been making such a ruckus. A great red wolf lay in the clearing, it's back left paw had been clamped down upon by a large iron trap, likely set by two-legs. wren hovered anxiously, eyeing the trap and the great beast caught within it.

the wolf's flanks shifted, hollow breathing, panting. it was exhausted, and its leg was bleeding profusely. occasionally a gentle whimper would escape it, and then a groan of frustration would accompany it's pain. from the moment wren entered the clearing, the beast did not raise its head or open it's eyes. It may well have already been dead, if it weren't for the shallow movement of the beast's flanks proving to wren otherwise.

Finally, as wren stepped closer, almost within snapping distance, the wolf shot up and lunged at her. It's jaws snarling and snapping. Wren let out a horrid shriek and leaped back. She registered a look of surprise on the wolf's face as she lingered just out of reach and hissed her own threat.

"just a cat." the wolf murmured softly, his head thumping down upon the earth as if the effort of almost cleaving her in two had been too much for him to bear. "thought you were the hunter who set this" he flicked an ear in the direction of the trap. she settled herself down neatly, still eyeing the wolf. she wouldn't put it past it to eat her if it were free, but at the moment it looked as if it didn't have much energy to do anything.

"that looks like a nasty wound." she murmured gently, rising and moving toward it, staying out of reach of his jaws but eager to get a closer look at what the iron had done to it's leg. "what's your name little cat?" the wolf asked, craning its neck to gaze at wrenclove. wren did not look up from the wound she was examining from a distance. "nothing to you, beast." the wolf blinked and then let out a raucous laugh. "well, my name is redarys. it is nice to meet you nothing." wren looked up then, surprise and terror in her eyes. redarys. she knew that name, the ancient alpha of the werewolves. the wolf grinned, "so you have heard of me." "Anyone with half a brain has heard of you, I'm not special." this earned her another chuckle. "would you care to free me from this trap then, little nothing?" wrenclove growled, irritated that she had given the wolf an insult. "my name is wren. wrenclove. and no, I will not be freeing you from this trap. What's to stop you from turning around and snapping my face off?" she challenged, still hovering outside his ring of reach. Redarys considered this for a moment, a thoughtful hum coming from his drool-slicked maw. "well, little bird, I suppose there is no guarantee that I will not turn and gobble you up, but a cat with any common decency would not immediately eat their rescuer." "who says you have common decency, you're a werewolf. but not just a werewolf, you're the werewolf." redarys inclined his head. "all reasons to leave me here I suppose, so I wonder why you did not run away in the first place? why do you remain?"

wren shifted, he had a point. why was she still here? she could bring her clan back here and kill this beast, kill the alpha of the werewolves.. and start a war they would not win. She sighed gently, her heartstrings tugging as she looked at the wound. It would need dressing, and care. Care that redarys was not prepared to do... but she was. Wren swallowed.

"I'm going to free you from the trap." she decided, watching the gleam of confusion in his eyes with satisfaction. He hadn't been expecting her to release him. He had only been teasing. "Just don't eat me before I can get it off." Redarys growled low in anticipation, the noise sent shivers down her spine. She moved to his flank, gingerly stepping over the trap. She knew there was a mechanism on the far side that would spring it open if she pushed it with enough strength. Redarys would just need to stay as still and as quiet as he could. "Just, stay still, and try not to draw any hunters here." she accused and redarys rolled his eyes, but offered no further protest. The great beast lowered his head and tensed himself.

It was painful work, removing the trap, and Wren trembled with the effort while redarys writhed in pain, but it was done. Redarys immediately rose, attempting to bring himself to his feet only to immediately fall when he found he could not put weight on his injured leg.

"You do that again and you'll lose it for good." she warned, moving to head into the trees. Redarys fell to the earth and watched the wave of her tail as she went.

"thank you for freeing me, wren." he murmured. Wren said nothing as she disappeared into the trees. She had no intention of leaving the wolf yet, her job was not yet finished.

what redarys was not expecting, was for wrenclove to return with a bundle of healing herbs in her mouth.

this cat was a downright mystery. why would she help him? especially when she knew who and what he was? the werewolf alpha watched as the she-cat gingerly applied a poultice to his open leg wound, and then wrapped it with cobwebs and other herbs to null the pain. she was quick and light on her feet, he could practically feel her fluttering heart, likely out of fear he would change his mind and snap her up as his afternoon snack.

he had no such feelings, of course, he wasn't a barbarian.

what troubled him the most though was that her curiosity always seemed to outweigh any caution she had towards him. she kept sending furtive glances his way. curiosity killed the cat. the old saying echoed through his mind. redarys shifted uncomfortably, suddenly bothered by his morbid thought. wrenclove worked in relative silence, breaking it only to remind him of this or that. When she had finished, she nodded decidedly, and settled back on her paws, watching redarys with casual eyes. he stared back at her, lupine grin adorning his maw. "like something you see?" and smirked as she spat and bashfully looked away. Redarys was pulled from his amusement however when piercing howls shook the night. His eyes widened, head snapping back towards where the noise had come from

His pack had realized something was wrong.

"You need to leave," he murmured gravely, turning concerned eyes on the feline before him. Her fragile form shook as she seemed to take in his sudden change in tone. By the ancestors she was so frail, so small... his pack would tear her to pieces. "Quickly little bird, fly back to the safety of your clan and never return. Not if you value your life." He watched her puff up indignantly and resisted the urge to roll his eyes, although her indignance at his statement was cute, it did not change the fact that he spoke truth. Returning to the werewolf pack's territory was a sure death sentence, especially for her. "I just saved your life!" she argued, rising to stand on her paws, tail lashing back and forth. Redarys bristled as he scented his pack on the breeze. They were getting close. He let out a hollow laugh, his eyes narrowing and fur puffing up.

        Fear.

That was what he now felt, and desperation to get this little cat as far away from his pack as possible. He may be their alpha, but she was a mortal, and werewolves in their changed forms were far too unpredictable to rely fully on orders. He had come to care, however small, for the young feline who had saved his life. He did not want to see her gone so soon. Deep down he hoped she would disobey his order to stay away, that he might see her again, but he knew the probability of that was slim.

"You need to run wrenclove. Run! Now!" he growled, desperation edging into his voice. Wren bristled and he found himself watching her eyes. Those expressive eyes of hers revealed it all to him. Her whole mind seemed to be reflected by the glossy sheen of those golden eyes. She dipped her head. "It was nice.. saving your life." she gave him a lopsided grin and the large male wolf felt dumbfounded for a moment. In the midst of such danger, she still found the courage to give him a smile. He snorted, raising his head so that he towered over her. "And you, little bird. Thank you for saving me. Now, flee for your life so you do not lose it so soon." She did not need to be told a third time, and turned tail, dashing through the trees as if flame nipped at her heels.

        Good.

A sense of relief washed over him as he watched her go, and he released a breath he did not know he had been holding. How could one come to care for another so quickly? Perhaps it was simply the debt he felt... after all the feline had saved him. He shook his fur out, turning as the first of his pack appeared between the trees. Time moved on, and so would she. He would not see that little cat again.

"Ah, so I see you've all finally arrived. How encouraging that you all took so long to notice something was amiss."

wrenclove could not remove the great alpha from her thoughts.

        she couldn't figure out why

she just had this feeling that somehow she needed to be near him. that something was going to happen and she was the only one who would be able to solve it. this troubled wrenclove for multiple reasons. the primary one was that usually when she got these feelings.. she was right. and the second was that redarys had warned her to stay away for her own safety. If the wolf ALPHA had been afraid of his own pack then shouldn't that mean wren should be terrified of them too? Yet, this feeling.. the tug in her chest.. it pulled her towards the wolven lands, towards the wilderwood and the forest beyond, towards a towering red wolf with a teasing grin and eyes as clear blue as the ancestor's moon.

it had been weeks since she had assisted the great wolf, and one night, the night of the full moon, she decided to seek the alpha out once again.

wren left as the sun began to set, hoping that the alpha would catch her scent and follow it. and that nothing else would follow.

as she entered the woods she was familiar with, a great dread seemed to wash over her. she launched herself up a nearby tree, and that is when she heard the howls and screaming. wrenclove took off, jumping from tree to tree in the direction of the noise, and paused on the outstretched limbs of a sycamore that extended over a clearing. Within the clearing, a pair of witches battled viciously with a large red wolf, who hung over the fallen body of a pale grey wolf.

        Redarys.

Her breath seemed to catch as she watched the witches hurtle him across the clearing. The sick smell of magic coated her senses and she tensed as the wolf let out a sickening cry and then fell silent as the witches finished their job. No! She wanted to scream. Redarys was moving but not fast enough, he was thrown down once again, and this time he did not get back up. The witches converged on his location. It felt like everything was panning in slow motion. "REDARYS!" the scream broke from her throat as she hurtled herself from the tree and toward the witches with power and rage unlike anything she had ever felt building up in her chest. She threw herself over the limp form of the red wolf, a vicious growl erupting from her throat. Her fur bristled twice its size and the witches balked, surprised by the newcomer on the scene.

Before the witches could regain their ground, wrenclove reached for the magic humming in the air. Golden strands of it surged from the earth, swirling around the pair before releasing it upon the witches with a vicious cry. They flew backward with a rush of air and wren howled in triumph, still trembling over the form of redarys. The wolf whined softly, his blue eyes opening slightly in awe to find wrenclove glowing in the night, magic thrumming through her veins and around the pair.

"little bird." he murmured, tears finding his eyes as he raised his head, gently his nose pressed into her neck. wren leaned into it, and it felt as if the whole world had just fallen into place. "mate bond." he murmured, and wren jerked back. "what?" "mate bond." redary's eyes glowed in awe, he shrugged at her shocked expression. "it's a wolf thing. I just.. didn't think it was true." he gasped as the golden magic surrounded him and then fell still as it lifted him, swirling and hiding him from view until redarys changed entirely. wren watched in awe as he floated down to earth, a lithe red cat in the place of the giant wolf. "redarys?" she questioned tentatively. the male laughed and lunged at his little bird. he wrapped himself around her, sending them both tumbling in the grass with the force of the embrace. "yes?" he asked, his eyes glowing once more. It was him, this cat was her redarys, she would know those eyes anywhere.

"you haven't explained the bond," she stated matter-of-factly as if he wasn't currently pinning her to the ground. He laughed again and stepped off her striding in the grass with the grace only a wildcat turned wolf could muster. "you mean you haven't felt it? the tug?" wren considered this for a moment. she had, but she hadn't known why. "I have," she pondered, cocking her head slightly. "But I thought I was just making things up because it isn't every day you meet the werewolf alpha." He inclined his head in agreement. "werewolves only feel it once. I have not met mine in the 900 moons I've been on this plane and I did not think I would ever find one. but here you are, here you came. You protected me, wren, and that is now twice that you have saved my life." Wren looked away suddenly bashful. "Just because I feel some weird emotion doesn't mean we should be.. should be.." she sputtered, her face growing redder by the moment. Redarys gave a signature, wolfish grin. "Mates? Lovers?" He prodded, which earned him a good-natured swat and huff of embarrassment. Redarys's gaze softened. "We could just be friends." Wren looked at him then and really considered him. He was giving her the option. "Let's just see what this is first." she suggested. Wren wasn't against this whole... thing.. but it was all so confusing and all so new. She didn't want to rush into anything.

"Fine, let's see where this takes us." Redarys grinned softly, striding up to shove his shoulder into hers playfully. She responded with an equally hard shove and the pair began making their way back towards Redarys's pack. "The dawn is coming, my pack will be safe to be around." Wren considered this for a moment.

"Then let us go meet them."

wren and redarys then made their way to redarys's pack. this night had turned out to be very eventful and wren was even more nervous about actually meeting the wolves. she chose to omit the whole, mate bond thing from her mind for the time being. the whole process simply made her anxious and she didn't want to think about what it actually meant.. that she was in love with a werewolf? and not just any werewolf, their ancient alpha? that their fates were as entwined as a tree's roots to the earth? she felt a chill settle itself along her spine and she sighed anxiously. wrenclove felt like wringing her tail into knots. redarys looked over at her, his blue eyes taking in her anxiety.

"if you'd rather not meet my pack..." wren shook her head, immediately dismissing his statement. "No, no. I offered, remember? I'm just thinking about earlier. It's a lot to get my head around." redarys inclined his head, but he didn't seem to be as anxious as she was about this. he had said that it was a wolf thing, so perhaps this whole situation was more common than she thought. "you don't seem as concerned about.. this.. as I am." redarys stopped fully, turning himself to face her and take in her full expression. "wren I am absolutely terrified, but I'm not against trying to figure out what this is. I'm not opposed to it. like I've said before, it's a wolf thing. fate has a weird way of bringing cats together who belong together, and I trust fate.

fate has led me to you, and I've felt it since our first meeting." wren took this in for a long moment. It wasn't like she didn't feel anything for him either, she felt it just as strongly as he had.

"fate has a twisted sense of humor."

redarys laughed, "that she does." he nudged her forward, beginning to move again. "come on, through here." wren swallowed her anxiety, and followed fate through the bushes and into the unknown.

redarys watched wrenclove greet his pack, and knew that they could smell the connection between them. although wren likely wouldn't be able to sense it, now that redarys had put a name to the sensation that had reverberated through his bones these past few weeks, he couldn't shake it. it was all around him, wrapping him up and drawing him toward her as she lightly moved through his packmates. he felt an overprotectiveness he had never felt before, wash over him as she greeted etienne, who was notoriously aggressive, and he hovered anxiously nearby, ready to snap the male back into line should he so much as look at wren in the wrong way. but he must have sensed the knife he balanced on, because he did nothing but dip his head respectfully.

"she must really be something, to have you up and about again."

redarys turned his head, as svala slipped from between the trees with a sly grin. she prodded his shoulder roughly, playfully. "I have no idea what you imply." svala shook her head. "you do not need to play dumb. just a few moons ago you were ready to let it all go. there was a loneliness to your eyes, a sorrow that clouded your soul. you were ready to leave this plane for the next. now, someone has lit a fire in your eyes again." she nodded toward wren, who was engaging in a pleasant conversation with diana just out of earshot. "she lit that flame. I see it whenever you look at her. you look at her as if she alone holds the secrets of the world." redarys shook his head. "we only just met." "fate does not care for the length of time, she only cares that her purpose is fulfilled. yours is a relationship written in the stars. she looks at you the same, she's just shy about it. I reckon she's even embarrassed by it." redarys shifted uncomfortably, casting his eyes back to wrenclove. she had been so anxious a few moments ago, and now it seemed as if all the worries of the world had lifted themselves from her shoulders. "she's an anxious cat." "that didn't stop her from saving you, though, did it?" redarys's head snapped up. "you saw that?" "I arrived shortly after she threw those witches halfway to the moon. a cute trick, honestly. she charged those witches braver than most. you know how mate bonds work, they strengthen one another. wrenclove puts the life back into you, and you put the bravery back into her." redarys took this in, content with contemplating his friend's words. "is that how it was with you and finn?" svala sighed, wrapping her tail around her paws. "finn gave me hope, and I gave finn purpose. finn needed someone to rely on, someone that he could serve but also love and provide for. Finn gave me a reason to keep going, similar to you I suppose. It must be exhausting, living for so many centuries." redarys waved her off, more interested in her and finns mate bond than this budding one between him and wren. "you must miss him." svala fell silent, nodding.

"Not a day goes by where I do not think of him." redarys felt the knife of sorrow twist in his heart. he would only imagine what would happen if wren were to be ripped from him so soon. would he move on? or would he wallow in her loss? he chose to cast those doubts from his mind, refusing to give them life. "you and wren will be fine. finn's death was far from orthodox, statistically, you and wren will live long happy lives together." "until she dies of old age and I go on living." svala shoved his shoulder aggressively, a growl on her lips. "quit thinking like that when it's what? barely been a day. You are so cynical." he shrugged. "it's true, isn't it? what makes our relationship different from any other werewolf who has fallen in love with a mortal? she will die, svala. far sooner than I if the world doesn't take her first." svala sighed, growing bored with his cynicism. "just enjoy it while it lasts, redarys. you never know, maybe she'll surprise you. I've heard she is the ancestral seeker of her clan, if her demonstration earlier is any indication maybe she has more magic in her blood than she believes."

        "perhaps." redarys conceded.

it had been a long night (and technically the following morning) for wrenclove, and the ancestral seeker was eager to return to her own clanmates. they must be worried sick, she had dashed off with little talk to where she was heading. this was the part wren had been dreading the most, saying goodbye to redarys again.

just as dawn broke the treeline, she finally drifted her way back to a contemplative redarys. the male regarded her fondly, dipping his head. "how was your.. evening? morning? I never know what to call it." wren laughed, shaking her head and settling herself beside him. "it was good. your pack is pleasant, very fond of manners, I find that I felt quite outmatched in some of my conversations." redarys grinned, it was laced with pride. "yes, we wolven take great pride in our mannerisms and sophistication." he rose then, and gave a mocking trot about wrenclove, his head held high and nose even higher, as if he were some snobby aristocrat from a faraway land. his performance kind of reminded wren of eiderdweller, which made her dissolve into a fit of laughter.

"what? are my sophisticated mannerisms funny to you?" redarys teased, laughing just as jovially. he finally sighed though, settling himself once again beside her. a seriousness overcame his features as she too, fell into contemplative silence.

"I should return to elmclan soon."

redarys felt disappointment bite at his heart, but he knew this moment was coming. "yes, your clan will be worried." he felt suddenly awkward, and unbalanced. he didn't know how to continue this conversation or express how delightful this evening had been, but most importantly he didn't know how to express that he wanted her to stay.

"what if I came with you?" wren jerked as if something had struck her, "no. that would not be a good idea at all." redarys recoiled as if he too, had been struck. "they won't like you..." she added shyly, turning to look at him with worry in her eyes. "not that I don't like you, I like you a lot." "like me enough to stay here with me instead of returning to elmclan?" redarys watched wrenclove close her eyes and shift backward. he felt the hope inside him wither away. of course, he should not expect her to leave her entire livelihood for a werewolf she just met. even if that werewolf was her soul-bonded mate.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked that of you." redarys conceded, dipping his head apologetically. When wren opened her eyes, they were brimmed with tears. "Why is this so hard?" "Oh wren," he cooed, embracing her as she began to cry.

"Do not worry little bird, we will see each other again."

weeks passed. time was like a crawling snail, so slow and pathetic. wrenclove wished she could sink her teeth into the earth and drag it faster to speed it up, certainly, the ancestor who chases the sun across the sky could be just a little faster with his pace.

it felt like agony, being separated from redarys, and although it felt like her soul was split, there was still a side of her that recognized her duty to her clan. she was the ancestral seeker, and she needed to perform her duties to her clanmates. the clan comes before your personal life, regardless of how agonizing it felt being separated from the one she had learned to love. that had been the cruelest realization of them all, how much she had actually loved him. she hadn't had thought she could feel such strong emotion with only weeks between their meeting and the day he brought her to his pack, but only weeks after this event she felt as if she could no longer go another day without seeing redarys.

she wanted that wolfish grin like she wanted water or food. she needed it, but still wrenclove drug herself on, desperate to keep her duties to her clan above her personal life.

        -----

it was a relatively nice day, and wrenclove had just finished rearranging the herb storage when the scent of magic pierced the air. panic clawed its way up wren's throat.

        witches

wrenclove dashed out of the den and was greeted by the sight of three witches. they grinned and laughed and cut through elmclan's ranks as if they weren't fully coated in warding herbs. the sight of it sent chills down wren's spine. wren turned and watched marulafrond cut through magic in the air and challenge the left witch. the right witch was occupied with a group of elmclan guardians who savagely attacked her, desperate to defend their clan. this left only the center witch, likely the most powerful, unengaged in combat. wren took stock of her bearings, tested the weight of the magic in the air, and then charged the middle witch.

they scuffled ferociously, wrenclove was blasted back by a powerful spell, but she summoned ancestral magic of her own to defend herself. the pair exchanged blows, and wrenclove was forced to retreat up the mountain, fearful that the witch's blasts might hit a stray elmclan cat. as wren led her up the mountain pass and out of the way of any other cat, she suddenly realized that she had led herself into a dead end. wrenclove felt her fur stand on end as she approached the yawning cave before her. this cave was as much of a death sentence as facing the witch behind her head-on, filled with twists and turns. It was impossible to navigate. freyward's pass.

wrenclove felt a cry of desperation claw its way out of her throat. she wasn't dead yet, she would give this witch the fight of her life. she turned to face the cackling elder, who easily blasted wren into the mouth of the cave. wren was weakened, between battling in camp and the trek up the mountain, she was spent. she gave a frustrated cry and pulled herself up, only to stumble and fall into the dirt again.

the middle witch gave a triumphant cackle and raised her claw to deliver the final blow when a deep growl rumbled through the earth.

she stumbled backward, a cry of fright escaping her maw, as the form of wren weakly trembled, limp upon the ground. behind wren, loomed eyes as clear as the ancestor's moon, alight with a rage akin to eternity's torment. another snarl broke from the great beast, as over the fallen cat stepped a great red wolf, teeth bared in a vengeful snarl. besides the wolf, three other wolves appeared in the darkness and growled their own challenge. the witch cast her glance between the four wolves and hissed, fleeing for her life. the red wolf flicked his tail, and two of his own launched themselves after the foolish witch.

redarys lowered his head, gently nuzzling wrenclove, whose eyes fluttered open anxiously.

"we really need to stop meeting like this." the red wolf teased, which earned him a weak swat across the snout. "I seem to remember the roles reversed last time." redarys pressed his head into wren's weak form, and she coughed gently. "thank you redarys, you saved my life." the wolf shrugged playfully, shifting back into the lithe form of a tall red cat. "nothing you haven't already done for me. I was so afraid I'd lost you." he whined, once again embracing the fallen form of wren. "will you be alright?" "nothing a little rest won't fix." "I think I'm tired of witches and fighting." wren sighed. "me too little bird. I think we've had enough adventure to last us a couple of months at the most." wren scoffed and redarys laughed.

        "I missed you wolf."
"I missed you too, little wren."
