I think collecting every pet could be the end goal, but technically, this might not be possible, as new pets are always being released. Even if you get every single normal and store pet for a year, how do you get the unreleased OMGSR pets? Trading for them would wipe out your collection, unless you have doubles of other high demand OMGSR and VR pets.
My goal is to collect every single event pet on the site. Unfortunately, this includes a lot of "list pets" from 2008 and 2009, which can be even harder to get than certain OMGSRs...
Fun fact: it's literally impossible to get every single pet on the site, because there are custom pets with only one in existence that belong to CS staff members.

I'm trying to collect all store pets, guinea pigs, and non-animal (excluding the bee) URs and let me tell ya - STRESS. FULL.
If you want to, go for it! Especially if collecting things is satisfying and enjoyable for you. But I will tell you this: it can get very frustrating and even seem impossible. But if you're really determined, I say do it! Best of luck and know that I'm rooting for you ^^ But it can be easy to get discouraged.
(Oh, and yea... Reading some of the replies, I'd go with the same advice everyone else is giving - only collect the ones you want. To me, it's more fun and satisfying that way. Truth be told, I have a hard time collecting store pets or even wanting to trade for them because, sometimes, I'm not the biggest fan of some designs! Along with that, I always like seeing people with collections/hoards that are specific. Like collections of a specific species, animals with certain design traits (like heterochromia, stars, spots, etc.), event animals, etc. It's all very fun and - being someone who collects specifics as well - it's a lot less discouraging! So yep, specific collections are a good way to go.)

As someone who has been fairly active on the site since 2014, i’ve had nearly every pet on the site pass through my account, but i’ve never had them all at once, which is what really motivated me to start the full collection. I actually just returned from semi-quitting about 2 months ago now and had nearly nothing, as when I quit I gave away a large chunk of my valuables, so that made it like… 50000 times more difficult to do than usual. Luckily, I have a full-time job and am extremely irresponsible with my money, so crosstrading offsite currencies for larger pets I needed helped me a ton and I now only have 26 ex-lists to go til I’ve finished the rareslist collection. After TWO months!
To answer your question—yes and no. In my circumstance its been very worth it, and i’ve had a ton of fun hunting down the pets I needed. But, if you're someone fairly new to the game and don't have a lot of trade fodder, patience, or a way to continuously profit in trading I really wouldn’t recommend it, and would say to just focus on collecting the pets you REALLY want now, and try again later down the road once you’ve hit a wall like I did!

I agree with pretty much everyone else. Unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to the site (or off site for trading), are willing to pay a lot of money for C$, or other external means, it's really not feasible to get a complete collection. Even with that help it's going to be a massive undertaking and I really wouldn't consider it "worth it".
I started collecting in 2013 and I am missing 13 pets; 2 monthly the rest UR. I absolutely consider the journey worth it. It's not the pets themselves but what my art is now compared to then. I could have easily made much more progress in those years, but I have absolutely struggled in pinning down what I needed to do. Drawing characters for other people not only kept me occupied but it gave me direction in baby steps. I was better able to understand where weaknesses were. It's the small victories that matter. My recent ones is I've now gotten the hang of transparencies, I feel my battle with layers is over, and I can now be okay with posting human art without being completely embarrassed. Once I get all the pets I want to make something neat to showcase what I've learned to commemorate. Then do it again after I get the new Dec. 18th pets.
For comparison, my first:

https://www.deviantart.com/anicb/art/Noxxis-912318196I went from charging I think 4 09' rares for a full body to 2 mid advents worth.

I'm also going for that goal, which feels impossible, especially since I've been on and off sporadically since 2014. I think I'm going to take the advice of others in this thread and try to complete years and work backwards that way.
Trying to collect one of each pet on ChickenSmoothie! If you'd like to help with this goal, please consider sending a trade!

not worth it imo. to be honest i really dont think its attainable for most players unless youve been playing since the beginning of the site - i prefer to set my goals a bit lower bc im just going to get frustrated knowing i can never complete a goal thats set way too high. not be be pessimistic but even with 7 years on the site i have yet to see ANYone with a complete collection - its possible obviously, but not for 99.9999999999% of players. honestly id just pick one goal (ie collecting all pets from one year, or one event, or of a low-demand species, a certain theme, etc) and stick to that, its much more rewarding to actually finish a goal :] also if you dont like a certain petjust trade them! its not worth it to hang onto something you dont want for arbitrary reasons, just have fun with it yk

a complete collection has always been an unrealistic and stressful thing for me to think about. as some have mentioned, there are pets that I don't even like, so why collect them? e.g. the bugs from last Halloween, amazing job done by the artists, don't get me wrong, but some are my worst nightmare in real life so I traded them away as fast as possible. having the checkmark just didn't seem worth it to me. I'd rather trade that towards something I actually want.
when I started playing seriously, my wishlist contained only pets I actually wanted. I've since reached the majority of the feasible ones and have since started creating new collection goals such as lions, sitting cats, store pets, malk pets (except spiders), etc. to fill the time. I would definitely say completing all your favorites first or one species definitely an admirable goal in and of its own. it gives you something to work for (so you don't feel bored) without feeling like you'll never reach it.

I just collect pets I don't have as I find them. I've arranged my groups in such a way it isn't necessary, though I'd like to see how many I can get.
That said what hurt me was going on hiatus from 2013 through summer 2018.
Looking for: Halloween 2019 items. I have tokens but missed the trade in times due to no internet access the end of October.
