That's kind of an odd question, especially since there's no way you could know if I even like to read...but hey, it's in the name of free cookies so I guess it's not really that odd... Zephyr pondered the question a moment longer, trying to think of the last book he read. Was it the one with the aliens, or was it the with super powers?

After racking his brain he tried explaining the story to Suni, "I really liked how the author of the last book I read wrote stories but I can't remember the name of the book nor the name of the author. The story was about this kid who didn't know his dad but had a mom and a stepdad, and the stepdad was a jerk. The kid then discovered that his real dad was actually a Greek god and it gave the kid like super powers, kinda. I remember that he could control water. But anyways, he also discovers there's a bunch of other kids like him with Greek god parents and weird powers. And then his mom is taken because someone thought he had some special sword that he'd never heard of and wanted him to bring it to them. So the kid and some new friends of his go to find it (or maybe it was some way to save his mom?) and after a few wrong turns end up in I think it was the underworld? But basically this kid saved everyone and found the sword and yeah...do you know what book that is?" But Suni only looked blankly at him. Maybe I just thought that I said it aloud? Oh, well.

Zephyr cleared his throat, "Uh, I really look up to the author of the last book I read because they somehow made the story really really funny! I wish I could write funny stories without them sounding weird or extremely out there. Even if it were a fantasy story I think I wouldn't be able to mix the funny stuff and the actual story as great as this author did. Because, well, I've tried and I can tell you right now that it is not pretty... But I liked how the story was a huge adventure with a bunch of different discoveries but still had the humor of ridiculous situations that seemed plausible for the story but the main character who was telling the reader what was going on was so shocked by each discovery it was just really humorous to me. And I think the person may have also been a bit sarcastic? But anyways, yeah, that's the author I look up to. I love the humor and wish I could do it myself, but luckily I think they have quite a few books so I can take my time and enjoy the rest of what they've written instead of trying my hand at it only to fail."

209/200
I only included the last paragraph in the count as it's the part that actually responds to the prompt directly.
The book Zephyr is thinking of is The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

Cassiel loves to read and has his own collection of various novels that fill the two bookcases in his home.
They mostly consist of mysteries and romance novels, some of his favorites being the more poetic ones, but regardless enjoys them all the same.

His favorite author is also one that inspires him, Aster Iris. She has written many of Cassiel's favorite stories, and in her writing has made him feel things on a deeper level, as if he was truly in the world that she had written, like he was the character her story.
He has gotten so invested in her writing that he has actually lost track of time and has had others call out his name several times before finally bringing his attention away from the book.

He looks up to her as she too had come from a place where she was forced to be someone she didn't want to be, that she left that place and has become a happier person because of it, and has made her the author she is.
This has inspired Cassiel to always keep moving forward and growing into the person he wants to be and feels like he his inside.
It was actually her works that helped Cassiel make the decision to leave his home and move to the city, where he's made a life for himself that's surrounded by friends.

(Side note: "Aster Iris" is a fictional author in my kalverse)

nico scrunched up his face slightly at the question. authors? he didn't read very much, let alone read enough to look up to an author. the last book he read was probably a year ago, he didn't exactly have the attention span for reading anymore, although he did as a kit, but what kit would be remembering authors by name really. he was lost. digging deep in his mind he tried to think of his favorite book he'd read, because maybe, just maybe he'd remember the authors name. he tapped his right paw on the ground as he thought.

after a few moments his brows raised a bit. the greek, egyptian, roman and norse mythology type books he read in his teens! he loved those and could never get enough of them. family would try to buy him different books from the same author but end up getting the books he already had, so he had many copies of each book. he remembered getting completely lost in that world and even wishing it could be his own world, but alas, it was just fiction, so he settled for the books. who was the author though. he couldn't remember the simplest things sometimes. it started with an r didn't it? yeah! the guys first and last name both started with r. he could remember that very well, atleast. but the temptation of those maybe-cookies suni had offered in return seemed to have pushed his mind to remember.

"rick riordan!" nico blurted out immediately. "i used to read all his books when i was younger and i admired the worldbuilding and everything so much. he is an incredible author, really, and i love mythology of any sort so his works always appealed to me a great amount." he trailed off a bit and scratched his head for a moment. "i'm not sure what works he is producing now but i'm sure they're just as great as what i used to read. i'd definitely say i look up to him." nico said and gave suni a small smile.

Oscar shuffled awkwardly “well I’m not much of a reader, but there’s this one book I read when I was younger, ‘The Colour of the Sun’ by David Almond, I first picked it up because the cover was pretty but I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. Although I haven’t read any of his other books this one really stuck out to me, it’s like every chapter is a story of its own but it all flows together, the descriptions of the world around the main character are so vivid” he smiled.
“I was so fascinated with the story I almost read it in one sitting, so I guess you could say I look up to him because of his style of writing in this book?”

Hazel started thinking for a moment. She didn't really have a favorite or one that she looked up too so she started thinking. Neither did she really have a favorite book. "That is a hard question" She told herself aloud. She was a fan or the warriors books so she started considering. Hazel started thinking about it, she didn't know if she really had a favorite author or authors so she guessed the warriors authors would be the best because there were several of them writing the books so would that count? She sure hoped so at the very least.

"I guess the Erins or Erin Hunter would be my favorite author, there is several of them hence why I called them the Erins. They wrote the Survivors dog books, the Warriors book series, Brave lands a more lion based series and one more I forget the name of. I am impressed and look up to them because they somehow manage to write many thought provoking books. I guess that is why there are more than just one of them!" Hazel answered the question cheerfully and smiled. She was proud of this answer and she didn't know why, maybe its because she finally made up her mind?

Nestor tilted his head, frowning. He pondered the question for a moment, before giving the honest answer.

“Suni… I hate to disappoint, but despite my enthusiasm during our initial meeting, I’m not as well read as I may seem!” Nestor seemed a little embarrassed, cracking a small smile, and continued.

“Ah.. you see, though literature was a large focus of my education in my former years, its been a very long time since I have had the opportunity to sit down and read. Even so, much of the literature I read in my younger days were from all sorts of various authors! I have never been able to truly pour over the work of just one literary artist… I suppose it's both a blessing and a curse, hm?”

Nestor tapped his fingers on his chin, gazing right through poor Suni as he did so. “On further reminiscing though, I do remember an author that quite intrigued me! Have you heard of Flannery O’ Connor?” This time, Nestor waited for Suni’s response before continuing.

“The name of the novella I read has escaped me… but I recall the story of a family traveling to Florida from Georgia. They fall upon some misfortune following the Grandmother’s rather… disingenuous remarks. She touts herself as a woman close to God, and yet it is her sins that the family, and ultimately she must pay for. It makes one think.” Nestor paused.

“I recall learning as well that much of her work calls attention to what others see as ‘grotesque’. Her characters are morally flawed, as was the Grandmother, despite what they may tout as righteousness. Many of her stories also call attention to the acceptance, or lack thereof, of marginalized people including those of color and the disabled. Flannery O’ Connor herself had been diagnosed with Lupus, and the treatments could take quite the toll as well. I admire that she was realistic, honest, and unabashedly so.” Nestor was rambling again.

“Although I couldn’t give you my favorite author, I hope that I have given you something new to explore! I believe I may have to explore her works further as well, and for that I should thank you Suni. You have my gratitude!” Nestor’s relaxed grin returned, and he headed off to order a coffee and peruse the cafe’s book selection.

Tolkien. Probably one of the most commonly given answers, but that's for a reason.

Nils utterly adores his work. Especially, of course, The Lord of the Rings. He loves the characters - so relatable, so inspiring, so fleshed out and developed that they seem so real - as well as the style of writing. What other author has managed to capture emotion so carefully? Who else could describe a land so thoroughly, and make it appear before your very eyes? Because that's what he does - you don't just imagine Middle Earth. You see it; whether with eyes open or shut, you can see it.

The dedication to his world is beyond Nils' understanding, and he loves him for it. Which other writer has ever poured so much time and effort to creating such an expansive world? Fleshed out every crack and crevice with lore, with song, with detail. So many stories, so many legends, that it's hard to believe they came from the mind of one person. One brilliantly talented, extraordinary person.

Of course, the plot itself is one of the greats. Repeated throughout history, yes - the triumph of good over evil, the struggle to bring justice to light and banish the dark. But goodness, what struggles these characters go through. It's not a fairy tale. It's gritty, and it's real. It's the kind of book where you follow the story so intently, get lost in the words so fully, that when you stop, it's as though blinking away a dream. The book takes you on a journey, and it's a pleasure and a joy to go along for the ride.

prompt: Adeline's ears perked up at the open mic question... but then she seemed to shy away. "Well.... it's a bit embarrassing... I mean she's a great author that's not the embarrassing part! It's just..." The kalon sighed, before smiling, "My favorite author is Jane Austen. Probably pretty cliche I know, but let me tell you why. You see the world she lived in, it was very different from ours, the time period, the place in society, all of these factors played a role in who she was and how she wrote. But in her stories, you see so many of those aspects shine through. It's like brush strokes on a painting, sometimes they're uneven or go a different direction, she doesn't paint her characters as 'perfect' she makes them so real!" The kalon grew more comfortable as she explained, "Thats what I love so much about her books, the romances aren't just perfect fairytales with princes and princesses, they show real people interracitng in real ways, even if those ways seem pretty different from us now!" Adeline laughed, "When you read them, it's like you and Jane Austen are gossiping about the people in the best way possible, you see all different sides of the characters. And yes, sometimes they fulfill archetypes and of course you'll end up knowing more about the main protagonists, but the other characters never felt like background characters to me, they just felt like they were living their own stories yet to be read! So that's why I really look up to Jane Austen, because she makes her characters so real its as if you've gotten to meet them yourselves!" (275)
