"Can I be hiding who I am? I don't think so, maybe this quote is just throwing me off." Hazel murmured to herself and she shook her head. "I'm not confused on who I am, am I?" She asked herself as she started questioning herself. "I'm pretty sure I don't use two different faces with others? I don't think so at least.. I'm pretty sure I'm the same kalon!" Hazel told herself thinking worriedly.

Maybe she was hiding herself from the greater amount of people. This did throw her off though because she didn't think she was confused on who she was! She felt confident with who she was. Hazel liked who she was. "I'm not two different people! I know that! Hazel thought to herself and she paused. "I think so at least!" She told herself. She paused and looked at Suni. "Sorry, this quote means something to me because it shows that sometimes people can hide who they truly are and then wonder if they really are who they are hiding." Hazel told Suni and dipped her head.

At first Sparky was pretty confused at the quote. What could it mean? And how did it make him feel?
But after reading it a couple of times over, it finally hit him. The quote was saying that. If a man were to act one way fir himself, bit then go around and act another way for others, eventually the man would lose sight of which side of him was true.

So when it came time for Sparky to walk up to the mic he only had one thing to say.

Ramses is a young boy with many faces, each for a different person or different circumstance. One for his family set with a permanent smile that does not reach his eyes. One for his work painted with disinterest to hide his agendas. There are many of these faces. It's required. Necessary, even, to take on these personas in order to survive. He knows this much... but also knows how tiring and consuming it becomes over time. The quote, to him, stabs right into the heart for he feels almost as if he has already lost himself to the many faces he wears. It was inevitable perhaps. He doesn't know anymore which of his faces, these personalities, is the right and proper one. Maybe none of them. He thinks maybe he's hidden his real self so deep inside that it may be impossible to ever recover. To him this quote is truth—it's his life. But he's gone far beyond this quote by now. He passed the precipice into reality and is living within its future of uncertainty. Ramses doesn't know at the end which face will be the last and final one of his life. For now, he lives knowing he has them, and for now accepting the truth of it is all that keeps him sane. [217 words]

▹ Prompt: The quote seems just as relevant now as back then. Especially with all the media people make nowadays, people can put up a front, but it wears on people or it bleeds between the different characters. Vorone feels like he has an understanding of himself, but then there are so many personality traits and interests he spots from other people and cobbles them together to make a convincing character. When he plays games with his friends sometimes they remark how similar some of his characters become. It’s hard to keep them all separate between games but also from himself. Sometimes he may make extremely different characters just to make the distinction but then he may not feel as strong of a connection to the game.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, acting out a more confident character may encourage Vorone to act as a more confident character. Playing a thief in a game will also not lead him to feel more inclined to steal anything either. The biggest issue is when he projects a bit too much of himself into the character, then his own insecurities may come through as a vessel for his own problems. Even if you keep character sheets and guides for everything, it might be hard to create a divide to say that this is that character and this is Vorone.

Nisha had really just wanted a cup of coffee. She hadn't had the heart to tell the enthusiastic barista no, though, when they'd given her the prompt for the open mic night along with her mocha. She'd told them she would think about it; now she was sitting here, doing just that out of guilt, feeling like she was all the way back in high school English. (Which she had been quite good at, mind you.)

She had to give it to the barista; this was an interesting quote. After all, who wouldn't be able to relate to it - that feeling that you need to hide, change, transform some parts of yourself, when you're presenting to society? And indeed, after so long of going through this - who's to say the transformation will not be permanent?

Our surroundings change us, she thought. Nurture versus nature and all that. At the heart of it, kalons were empathetic and sociable creatures; it was only natural that we impress on those around us, and they impress on us. She wondered - was it really possible to separate who you are from the society you lived in? Perhaps the question is not one of different masks and different faces, but really one of different aspects of the same person. We are contradictory, complicated beings. Surely it is impossible to distil the essence of yourself into a few buzzword personality traits. Yes, that was what the quote meant to her - the impossibility of really separating those different facets of yourself.

Was she actually going to get up and speak about any of this?

Absolutely not.

"I am not saying that he is wrong; in fact I enjoyed reflecting on his message. I was only saying, as a passing thought, that the way he delivered his idea is pretentious by modern standards. And yes, I do acknowledge this was a different time period; my point still stands." Perhaps it wasn't the ideal sticking point for Katsune to have, but she had gotten into a debate with a stranger who had happened to read the quote on the wall at the same time as her and commented on how wise the words were. She had agreed, and lightly commented on how pretentious the statement would sound if someone said it today. The stranger took offense, and although Katsune wasn't one to debate something ridiculous, she also wasn't going to let it go. The thought of watching a smug look appear on their face as if they had won grated on her peace of mind. To her, the meaning behind the quote by Hawthorne was clear: if you fake a personality long enough to please those around you, inevitably you'll lose yourself in the process. While there is much to be said on this topic, the most lighthearted thing to discuss about the message is its tone of voice. Which, by the passage of time, seemed less wise or thoughtful and more pretentious. Oh well, she thought to herself as she walked away from the stranger, who looked prepared to argue for Hawthorne's honor for more time than Katsune would allow for a pointless debate.

You're tempted into the Polar Espresso once again, catching the shop at a sweet spot between
the morning and lunch rush. Though there's no line at the register, there's still a fair
amount of people hanging out inside, chatting over drinks on the plush couches.

"Oh hey, you're back. What can I get for you?"

Mirjam greets you from behind the counter, seemingly alone. Feeling like switching things
up today, you ask her what drink she likes to get.

"Hmm, I usually go for a hot chai or matcha latte, I don't really drink coffee" Mirjam says,
then laughs at your expression. "I know, ironic. Burnt myself out after one too many finals
week spent chugging Red-Eyes." She shudders slightly at the memory, nose wrinkling
as she mutters a barely audible 'eugh.'

You give her your order, and to your surprise she continues talking to you as she rings you up.
It seems like Mirjam is warming up to you, just a little.

"Oh, and there's some new trivia up today, if you want to give it a shot." She leans towards you
conspiratorially and winks, "Don't worry, I won't make you write any English essays."
