need some advice:

i got a new puppy and hes 9 weeks old. hes really friendly towards humans but towards dogs he's like a haunted victorian child. he straight up doesn't know how to play and just bites my adult dog when she tries to play. not a play bite, he makes her scream. he gathers all the toys up in a stack and just stands stiffly over them growling at my dog. he hates when she touches me and so he has started resource guarding me. have any of yall had a puppy like this ?? i dont know what to do. i feel bad for my dog that i brought him home. hes tall and angry and shes really sweet and gentle. he does not act like this towards humans, touching his food and toys are all free game for humans but when it comes to my dog he wants to hurt her.

its definitely not puppy play, he simply doesn't play at all unless hes by himself with toys. he even constantly shoves her around and it just seems like bullying. i've been trying to research resource guarding but all of it involves resource guarding against humans, not against other dogs. i'm lost, and considering rehoming him to someone more equipped, or without any other dogs.

That is not normal puppy behaviour were did you get him from.

You would be better off contacting a responsible trainer who deals with behaviour the advice offered on here could make things worse.

You should go and search about how to help your dog with that. (fx. "My dog is aggressive with other dogs, what can I do to help it" is a good search choice.) I'll have to agree with the above person that you really won't get any advice that'll help your dog here, because it might make things worse.

Try asking your vet, or going on social media (fx. Facebook) and joining a responsible, intelligent group (maybe even a group that has to do with your dog's breed!) and asking the people there. You'll get a lot of responses! Or, you could go and ask dog trainers, like Zak George or Ian Dunbar.

I really hope you figure out how to help him. I feel really bad whenever someone thinks of rehoming their dog, and I know everyone else does too; but, if you decide to do so, please do send your dog to a sweet, gentle human with bucketloads of experience <3

Have a great day <3

ooh that sounds rough, and i don't say this to make you worry, but before your pup gets too old its better to find some sort of solution now rather than later. is it just your other dog he does this to, or is it others? i'd recommend getting in contact with a dog trainer who specifically trains the type of breed your dog is (if its a mix, find a dog trainer who works with mixbreed dogs with resource guarding problems). if you can't find anyone and don't have the money to i suggest looking into dog groups on social media like coffee.berry suggested above. or even some youtube videos, the trainers i personally like is kikopup and fenrir canine training (he's actually a canine behaviorist)
i personally wouldn't recommend any "big" tv dog trainers (caesar millan, victoria stillwell, etc) just a personal thing, its totally up to you how you train your dog and what resources you use! i wish you luck, i'm sure your baby is going to be a make a great companion in the long run and have confidence in yourself, there's lots of resources out there for things like this :)
work in progress, i will work on it when i feel like it

I realized that my dog has been licking and chewing on her paw pads. I'm concerned that they're irritating her and I feel like I should start putting something on her paws to help. I live somewhere where it's constantly hot so I can understand how her paw pads can become cracked and irritate her. Anyone recommend anything I can put on her paw pads to help?

If her paws pads are cracked you could try massaging them with coconut oil if she'll let you and it's safe to be ingested so it won't hurt her if she licks at it. I use it for my buddy as well and it works great, though I usually have to give him a little bit as a treat as well to distract him from licking at what's on his paws as he likes the flavor. Just make sure it has no extra additives like flavoring or sweeteners.

hi! dog trainer here. do you know when this puppy was separated from his mother? usually when puppies are separated from their mother/littermates too early, they do not develop the social skills necessary to understand when they are playing or harming another dog. for developing social skills, i recommend looking into local trainers and/or PUPPY social classes that are run by an experienced trainer. being under the watchful eye of a trainer while getting to play with other dogs his age will help tremendously, as he will be developing social skills while receiving both positive and negative reinforcement towards his nasty behaviors.

9 weeks is quite young and you still have time to start working on these behaviors. when there is something as serious as bullying and resource guarding, you don't want to wait.

as for the resource guarding, that is a very deeply rooted behavior (it traces back to the old days when food and resources were harder to come by!) that can rarely ever be fully trained out. however, it sounds like this is also going hand-in-hand with your pup being unsocialized and unsure of other dogs. it sounds like his confidence is pretty low, which can cause an array of concerns.
this is a behavior that needs to be nipped in the bud quickly, as it will only get worse as the pup gets older. he will begin to believe that it is ok to guard, and trust me when i say you do not want a fully grown resource guarder. i once fostered an adult male great pyrenees who was a nasty guarder, and it wasn't a very fun experience!

    tl;dr - contact a trainer! :)

My crew has been doing well. I can't remember if I announced my Canadian import girl here or not but she's the last photo lol. We are working on finishing up her OFAs soon and then hopefully we will be breeding her before too long!

You may also notice my tri was cloned, that sweet girl is Waverly and she came in September for a board and train and uh well I fell in love and couldn't imagine her breeder placing her after I had her. So she is staying and will hopefully be part of my future program but more importantly she will be a fun sport and show prospect!

Everyone else is good, Zona is giant and crazy, Bones is insane, O wishes they would not, Kes still loves posing, and Extra is still the most handsome boy who just turned one the other day! I love my Collies so much but this boy is very special.
