Whether she wanted to or not, Northstar had to put her trust into her new subordinate. He was abrasive and blunt and drove her crazy with his constant blabbering about his amazing adventures and heroic deeds she was fairly certain he completely made up. Sure, the stories were quite colourful and made long winter nights pass a little quicker, but that wasn’t enough to make her like him. On top of everything, he was lazy and every day it took him over an hour to get ready to go out on patrol or to hunt. Each day Thornblaze woke up late in the morning, stretched lazily and began cleaning his fur. Then he drank water and had something to eat. After that he often looked in the way of Northstar as if he wanted to engage in a friendly conversation or ask her to accompany him, but he would always resign in the end, after noticing her death glare following his moves. Then, when the sun was already high up in the sky, he finally disappeared between the trees and would return late in the afternoon with a bit of prey or news from his patrol.

One such time when he returned he was not alone, but accompanied by two kittens. One was hanging from his mouth by the scruff of the neck, the other rode on top of his head, desperately biting onto his ear with its teeth to maintain a hold on him and keep balance. Or maybe just being annoying on purpose.

“You don’t need to bring your filthy prey to me”, Northstar welcomed him back into the grounds of the clan. Thronblaze spoke through his teeth, without letting go of the little child. “They’re not prey, they’re kits.” “Rabbit kits”, she said, a statement rather than a question. “No, cat kits.” Silence fell between them as Northstar eyed the babies. “Why do they look so weird?” Thorn shrugged and gave her a slightly offended look. He might have found the kittens just moments ago, but he was already in love with them and willing to protect them and their honour with his life. “They’re not weird, they’re just… a little strange. Help me find a place where they can keep warm.”

With those words he trotted off to one of the carts to make a safe nest where the little furballs could spend the night. Northstar followed after. “What? You’re not being serious, my clan does not welcome some abnormal stray orphans, we are a mighty place with room only for the greatest of warriors!” Thorn didn’t listen. He jumped onto an old seat and laid the kittens in a bundle of scraps of human clothes. They immediately buried their noses underneath them. “Your mighty clan consists of me and you. You’re going to need all sorts of cats to keep it running. Those two are the start. We can train them to be warriors or medicine cats, anything. You need them.” Northstar didn’t seem pleased, but at least she listened to him. She left him with the babies and went off to sleep in her own cart.

Northstar never took a liking to the kits. She accepted them into the clan unwillingly, but only because she would have to fight Thronblaze over them and he was much stronger than her. Every day when he went out for prey or on patrol, she had to stay with them and take care of them. She wanted nothing to do with them, so all she did was sit on top of the roof of the cart and check up on them from time to time to see whether they were still alive. That was the extent of her interactions. She ignored every attempt they made at engaging her in a conversation or responded with a single word.

“I’m still not sure about the young ones” Northstar said a few days later when she joined Thornblaze during his daily routine. Maybe we should just kill them. They take up space and provisions and provide nothing.”

“Didn’t you say something about the snow of tomorrow? Maybe those are your special snowflakes”. “It was the blizzard of change”, Northstar hisses through gritted teeth. “And how could they be, when you brought them into my clan in the middle of spring?” Thornblaze lazily rolled over onto his back. He saw a speck of dirt on the ceiling of the cart and covered it with a raised paw. He played like that for a while, covering and uncovering it. “Yeah, but they were around two moons when I found them. Meaning they had to have been born by the end of winter and that’s when it snowed crazy wild.” He didn’t notice Northstar’s eyes widening with sudden interest. “The blizzard of change…”, she whispered to herself quietly. “Could it be…?” She turned her head and looked at the kittens, sleeping soundly in a bundle of moss and what used to be human clothes.

Wild thoughts started chasing through her head. ‘Could one of them be the deputy she requested?’ Her eyes sparkled when a new idea blossomed in her mind. She asked for a deputy worthy of her. A deputy that would follow her every command and do it blindly without question. Maybe there was no cat like that. Every adult would have it’s own views, want to argue or have it’s own goals. A kitten she could bend to her will. She had an opportunity to raise it and shape it to be just the way she wanted. A cunning smirk spread across her mouth. ‘Yes, this must be it’, she convinced herself. The gods haven’t forsaken her by not sending her a deputy. They gave her two.

‘Why two though?’, she wondered. ‘Perhaps one is a spare in case the first one dies or fails. How thoughtful of the gods.’

From then on she stopped trying to get rid of the kits. She even took interest in raising them and would tell them lengthy stories about the future of the clan and that they would play a part in making it the largest and greatest clan in all the lands. When they got older she would find them appropriate mentors and give them her own, private lessons.

STORY NOTES
→ The city of Rockport is finishing up repairs from the hurricane and many streets are closed off due to rubble pileup. While Peaches wanders around in search of fresh medical supplies, she runs into two ex-show cats. The lykois introduce themselves and ask if she knows a good place to shelter, as one is expecting kittens.
→ Mousewhisker stares out at the ocean where his apprentice, Sugar, drowned one moon prior. Lucy blames herself for her little sibling's passing. After a short talk with Mousewhisker, she decides to become a full-time warrior of DriftClan to prevent any similar deaths from happening in the future.
→ After checking in with his former clanmates in the comic store, Clark brings back some of their kibble supply to replenish DriftClan's depleted or destroyed food supply. He bumps into Rhea, who is also bringing along extra food for her friends.
→ Pearlshine sneaks aboard one human's boat to steal from their crab traps. But rather than food, she uncovers an oddly-patterned kitten stuck between two life vests.
→ Back in the shack, Shorepelt agrees to take on Pearlshine's rescued kitten, who is named Sharkkit. Muffin and Teddy decide to ask their mother for proper clan names, not wanting to be left out!
→ Stormstar wakes up in a cold sweat after another Bearpaw-related nightmare. Gullthroat is at a loss for how to comfort her, so he drags her to the lobster restaurant where they first met. They share a lobster roll while Stormstar cries into her deputy's shoulder.
