Also, on the earlier talk of having DNIs mention fandoms because they think liking something = supporting the creator is silly, imo. Almost everything you watch, read or play has some problematic element either to itself or its creator. It doesn't automatically make someone a bad person (though I certainly have a very small amount of specific fandoms in mind that I do not trust the fans of much, but I will not mention those here.) Even Disney has moral issues, but almost everybody likes Disney movies. If you try to avoid everything problematic, you'll have nothing left to enjoy.

As you said those talks that have been mentioned in several past posts are painting people with a broad brush and making assumptions about someone they don't even know. And that's pretty rude in my opinion.

And I imagine people who posted those posts wouldn't like it either if someone made assumptions about them based on what fandoms they're in or things they like. So no one should be doing this.

People. You can just still have the list. Just don't post it.

See it as like a trap. People interact with you from the list? Go mentally "haha! Fool. I see you are on my list. Blocked. You willingly approached me without me needing to do the job".

Free block.
There is also no anxiety about the idea someone willingly ignored your list.

I just kind of wish you ( staff ) would allow your members to participate in discussion before giving out rulings like this. We give you money & have for years, and then you turn around and hurt large portions of your site & then silence us for trying to, like, talk about it. It's extremely frustrating. I've played many pet sites for many years & none of them punish players for having a voice more than chickensmoothie does.

I asked this on page 9 or so. I agree with this; I think considering things like this the users should be asked to make a discussion about the topic before it was made a rule.

For lots of things on site, discussions are useful. When it comes to issues that we've had moderating, there is a huge disconnect between what is actually happening behind the scenes and what the end user sees. The first post (and follow-up posts in this thread) have made it clear that the number one reason these lists have to go is because they are directly endangering users. I have not seen any rebuttals to that that don't amount to "ban some parts of DNI lists but not others" which we already considered, discussed, and is in the first post. It is completely understandable that the safety issues we've faced have not seemed as important to users who have not seen them, because they have not seen them.

Any discussion before this particular rule change would be without all of the information as to why we want to ban them in the first place, which we cannot tell you because of user privacy. I think user discussion is genuinely very useful and an argument can be made that we should do more of it, but in the case of moderating, I have not seen anything suggested that we did not discuss prior to the rule change.

Would these users still be allowed to request this? I can imagine seeking out users with flashy gifs in profile to block them would MORESO put them in harm's way due to exposure to the material. I do not personally struggle w any photosensitivity issues so anyone who does is extremely welcome to chime in or correct me.

Images that effect photosensitive users are against the CS rules and aren't allowed to be posted, so the correct course of action would be to report a user with images like that so that we can remove them. I would encourage non-photosensitive users to report these if they see them as well so that we can help keep photosensitive users safe. There is therefore no reason to have a DNI for this since it is just rule-breaking anyway.

would this mean eyestrain images are also against rules ?

Anything eyestraining can be reported and staff will look into the situation. ^^
It really depends on the situation but if we agree it is eyestraining or otherwise might harm other users, especially those that are photosensitive, we will ask for it to be removed.

For example, people who require messages with their trades often make me incredibly anxious, yet there is no rule against requiring such a message. So I usually just c/p some "can't communicate" info over,if that is not message enough it's their problem.

Instead of a list, you could just politely ask not to bother you with the species you don't want to see or the issues you can't talk about. If they violate the rule and pester you, it is a matter for staff to deal with.

This thread has been riveting to read over the past while thank u staff. Full support on this for essentially every reason that's already been mentioned. Personally I really struggle to find DNIs yet alone read and remember every single one, I don't think they work at all or are necessary on a forum posting website. Everyone is responsible for curating their own experience online and strangers don't have to accommodate that outside of a basic level of respect and following the rules/terms outlined by the site.

I’m curious as to if staff could possibly sticky a thread/make an announcement on ways users can avoid their triggers(browser extensions, safe ways to tell people them, etc.) and maybe just a general internet safety refresher? I think this could help users struggling with the new change and just minors in general who haven’t grown up with internet safety like us oldies.

I'm aware there's already Forum posts about internet safety but I just wanted to make sure this suggestion isn't lost among all the others! A single post with a couple of browser extensions and other resources that stop autoplays of gifs/censor words might be really helpful for those trying to adjust to being on CS without a DNI : )

Does shinigami eyes work on chickensmoothie? It's a browser extension that shows you whether someone has spouted transphobia before, it's very useful for this purpose but I'm unsure if it works on all sites.

It's mentioned on the homepage:
"Which sites are supported?
This extension supports Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, Medium, YouTube, Wikipedia articles, search engine results and all the sites with Disqus comments. "

I doubt it'll ever support small forums like Chickensmoothie, so unfortunately the only way to find transphobes on CS is hear-say or seeing a post before mods get to it
