Mutation items will function as a full MYO, with a twist - users may add one Return-legal mutation of choice to their MYO. We'll be releasing one mutation item every month. To make sure players of all playstyles are able to equally have a chance at getting one, they'll be handed out via four different methods on a monthly rotation basis. This month, the community voted for a character development contest! To win this month's mutation item, develop the character you would be using it on.

In Return, mutations are essentially unique design elements that cannot be passed down to kittens in the nursery. Valid mutations should be present in at least one real life feline (which includes both wild and domestic cats), be genetically random and not reliably passed down to offspring (meaning nothing that breeds are based off of, such as folded ears and missing tails) and be legal to post on chickensmoothie (some mutations may be too graphic for the site and thus would not be allowed.) Examples of valid mutations include (but aren't limited to!) chimerism, somatic mutations, vitiligo, and finnish mutation.

This contest will run until the end of the month, with the end date being January 31st, 23:59 CS time. To enter, please fill out the full form below without leaving any parts blank or marking them as N/A. Entries may be up to 5,000 words long but may not include any art of the character that will be having the mutation, as a design contest will be held next month.

Unsure if your mutation idea is acceptable? Feel free to run it by staff! Double-checking is allowed & encouraged, but users will not be disqualified if they accidentally choose a mutation that isn't Return-legal.
COPPAs may post their entries on the main thread, a staff member will link these entries on this post so they don't get overlooked during judging.

The Final Assessment

The young apprentice paced back and forth. Today was their final assessment. If they passed, they would sit vigil for one night watching over the clan as the moon shined. This would make them an official warrior of TruffleClan.

Growing up had been rough for this young cat. With half of their face black tabby and the other half a pure white, they had become the center of a lot of mean games. Although the young cat did not like the games or the mean names, they pushed through. It had taken them far to be the bigger cat. Now they stood below the rock of the leader, AutumnLeaf. The other cats had not passed their warrior assessments, but this young apprentice had faith in StarClan.

AutumnLeaf stepped up and sat down. Up on her perch she had to look down at the apprentice. "Young ShadowPaw. Today we will give you your final apprentice assessment. If you pass, you will be granted you warrior name and serve this clan."

ShadowPaw's eyes gleamed, they were so excited. The older apprentice nodded their head. The leader stepped down and gave a glance at the apprentice. "Let us go, now." was all she said before stepping out of the safety of the clan camp.

ShadowPaw had been training for months for this. They quickly scurried out of camp, their mentor, PumpkinFrost, right at their heels. First, ShadowPaw slowed down. They dropped to a crouch and lifted their nose to the sky. The first step was to find their leader. The leader always pretended to be an enemy clan cat. ShadowPaw picked up on the scent and took off quietly through the moss and underbrush. The dark tail of their leader stepped into view. ShadowPaw sprang onto their leader and pinned her down. AutumnLeaf fought back, but ultimately the young apprentice had what it took.

- Personality -
A tom with a well guarded heart, who let few see his true self because of troubles in the past. When one does get to know him, he's a happy go lucky guy, who always wears his heart on his sleeve. Falling victim to judgement at a young age, he spreads kindness and acceptance those who need reassurance. Always first to offer help no matter the task he is a cat that many rely on the get the job done.

- Backstory -
Oswald was born in a litter of five, but that's where troubled soon brewed. The elders called upon he heard whispers amongst them ' Disgrace.. Abomination...Curse' are the few words he picked out. Trying to live his best life was a hardship he faced alone. Many through disgraced glances towards him and even his own family rejected him. Once he was able to defend and hunt for himself, Oswald soon became an exile. Sticking to the shadows, he soon became invisible. Living day by day, he always seeked the validation of finding a true family, somewhere he can call home but not wanting to be hurt he never sought it out. Humams who caught glimpses of Oswald all pointed and whispered amongst themselves and not sticking around to be rejected once again he slinks back into the shadows.

It was a wet and windy, autumn day. Oswald drenched for the torrential downpour after his latest hunt, he returned to cave he called home. Getting comfortable amongst the various forest debris, he started to eat whilst listening to rain as it poured outside. Halfway through his meal he was interrupted as a cat sought shelter from the rains. The cat's fur clung to its body, droplets falling from the ends. 'W-w-who are you ??' stammered Oswald. Surprised the cat swung around trying to find to location of the voice. 'I'm Tobias' the cat said merrily. Oswald tentatively stepped from the shadows becoming visible in the dark cave. 'Why are you here' he growled. Tobias retorted 'Relax, I'm seeking shelter from this storm and then I'll be heading back to my clan'. Oswald's heart skipped a beat and his tone softened. 'You have a clan ??' he inquired. Tobias sat at the mouth of the cave, watching the rain cascade down the rocks and answered 'Yeah six strong with two little runts running about' Hesitantly Oswald joined Tobias at the mouth of the cave and the two cats sat in silence listening and watching as the rain poured down. Soon the rain started to slow and a few rays of sun peeked through the canopy of leaves that sheltered the forest. Tobias glanced sideways and asked Oswald 'If you'd like you're more than welcome to join me as I head back home' 'I don't know' Oswald said as he retreated into the safety of the caves. 'I'll make you a deal. Come with me and if you don't like my clan, I'll bring you back here' Tobias exclaimed. With negativity coursing through Oswald's mind he almost was hesitant at first but soon agreed to Tobias's deal. The cats soon left the cave and started the trek through the muddy and wet forest towards the clan. Not a word was converesed between the two cats and the occasional chirp or screech cut through the silence. Just as the sun started to set, the cats soon emerged in a small thicket. Oswald noticed the small clowder of cats as they enjoyed the warm outdoors. A cat with black and orange fur padded towards them. 'Tobias how was the exploration ' he questioned. 'Fantastic besides the rain. Oh and this is umm I didn't actually get your name' Tobias replied. 'U-umm my name's Oswald' Oswald stuttered. 'I'm Leviticus and I'm the leader of this clan. What an interesting coat you have' he gracefully replied. 'Its more of a curse than anything' he shot back. Unfazed by the reply Leviticus let out a soft chuckle 'Let me show you something' he replied. He turned around a beckoned for the two kits, and they raced over. He placed a paw of the near naked kit 'This here is Percival' he explained 'Doesnt have much fur but still gives us trouble' He proceeded to switch paws and placed it on the other kit 'This is Dhalia' he answered 'We are unsure of the orange patches but she always reminds us that she's unique. So Oswald no matter what your look like you'll always be accepted here' Oswald felt his heart swell but remained on guard because it was too good to be true. But what if Oswald thought, what if this was the place he was seeking his entire life.

Prompt: Daisy doesn't seem very unique, just a brown and white cat. She's very quiet and doesn't stand out much, usually just blending into the background. But her brown and white coat is actually very special, a combination of two different genetic codes blended together by a stroke of fate. If her coat is hiding that sort of secret, what else is this sweet wallflower hiding?

Prompt: Opie stared at the night sky, his expression showing his distress as he sat, keeping his gaze along the night sky. Earlier that day, Opie faced one of the most difficult things he has ever faced before. Learning he wasn't special. That he wasn't worth more than anyone else- much less even with them. Learning that his entire life and childhood had been a huge lie. A seed of desperation was planted in him when his own parents had to break the news to him, especially alongside the fact they were the ones who set him on a pedestal all his life, claiming he was special. Claiming he would possess the next kindling flame to help their kingdom prosper.

Now all his pride drained, there was nothing left to be proud of when even that was built on the fact he was a late bloomer. They told him he'd become a bigger cat one day. They told him he'd become full-grown later. But that wasn't all they told him, they told him that he'd have the power to control a flame whenever he so pleased. Opie clenched his teeth in frustration, his tail beginning to
lash, not only showing his anger towards all the overwhelming amount of lies but also towards the fact he was out beaten by some other cat, that never happened.

Unsheathing his claws, he got up and turned around, heading to his blacksmith's hut. "Fine then." He hissed to himself, quietly enough only he could hear. "I'll make my own powers."
