Both of the she-cats were facing the crowd below them, the cats of Tundraclan. Hollystar had looked shocked when Mantismoon demanded to give an announcement to the clan, and even more shocked when Flashsun joined Mantismoon on the large stone overlooking the camp. Wisteriaflight looked up at the two tortoiseshells. They had to convince at least some of the cats to fight with them, or else all would be lost. They had told him what happened, and a sinking feeling crept into his stomach as he realized Eclipsemoon most likely would not be partaking in the battle- the black-and-white tom had seemed agitated when Flashsun described him, most likely due to Duostar’s words manipulating him. He listened intently as Mantismoon started to speak, “Cats of Tundraclan, I know many of you see me as just a Knight- a new one at that, but for many moons, I’ve been haunted by the spirit of a cat many of you know-” Before she could continue, Mantismoon’s body started to shake, and Wisteriaflight stiffened. Here was part two of setting the plan into motion. Before any cat could go and help, Mantismoon stopped shaking, and her eyes blinked wide open, and Wisteriaflight closed his eyes. If everything went according to plan, Duostar would be gone once and for all. “Hello cats of Tundraclan!” Mantismoon repeated, but in a voice that was not her own, and eyes that did not belong to her surveyed the cats below her, “It seems Mantismoon is trying to get rid of me? Tough luck, because I won’t ever leave. My name is Duostar, past Marchioness of Tundraclan, and my only goal is to tear this clan apart.” Mantismoon laughed, her voice borderlining on blatant insanity. The cats started to yell and hiss. Honeydew curled around her kits, Anacondapath looked as if he were about to jump on the stone and beat Duostar’s spirit out of Mantismoon, and Hollystar looked as if she couldn’t stand on her own paws anymore. The camp was in chaos, as Duostar, still wearing Mantismoon’s body like a second pelt, slinked down the stone. Cockroachstar shoved his way to the front of the crowd, “Take your spirit, and get out of my daughter!” He snarled. Duostar only laughed, “I killed your first daughter, why not kill the other?” Before any Tundraclan cat, or Cockroachstar himself, could stop her, she took Mantismoon’s own paw and drew her claws over Mantismoon’s neck swiftly. In another moment, Mantismoon fell, blood spurting out of her neck wound, spilling onto the ground below. The spirit of Duostar animated beside her, giving one last smile at the cats, who stood in complete shock and terror, and disappeared.
Hollystar was curled around Mantismoon’s body. She was still alive, but Wisteriaflight grew increasingly worried about her as her breathing slowly became more shallow and her heartbeat slowed. He could see Hollystar licking the top of Mantismoon’s head, willing for her kit’s condition to improve. Wisteriaflight had left the Nursery to take care of her, but he feared he wouldn’t have to care for her for much longer. Wisteriaflight didn’t know how Hollystar would react to losing her other daughter, especially after losing Wildfirebite only a few moons prior. Mantismoon’s neck wound would leave a scar across her neck, and while Wisteriaflight, in a normal circumstance, would not think a single neck wound could kill a cat, Mantismoon’s wound was deep, and Wisteriaflight didn’t know if infection would creep in before he could do a thing. Cockroachstar had stayed with Mantismoon the night before, and was now asleep in Hollystar’s and his nest. Wisteriaflight sighed. How could the plan have gone so wrong? The night prior, Flashsun had figured that Duostar would possess Mantismoon, and when that happened, she would knock Mantismoon off, injuring the body so Duostar would have no choice but to leave her body due to the pain, and Flashsun would finish her off. What they didn’t foresee is Flashsun being too terrified to do anything due to the effect her mother had on her, and Duostar resorting to trying to kill Mantismoon with the young cat’s own claws. Sometimes, when both Swanpaw and either Hollystar or Cockroachstar had fallen asleep, Wisteriaflight could see a ghostly shape laying next to Mantismoon, his black-and-white pelt easily distinguishable despite the gloom and lack of light. Wisteriaflight always stared at her, his eyes somberful, and sometimes he could hear him whispering about how he should’ve been there, and if he was there then maybe Mantismoon wouldn’t have gotten hurt. Wisteriaflight tucked his head into his paws. This wasn’t good in the slightest.
Redwood quietly snuck out through the camp entrance. She was following Flashsun, who seemed agitated, and who quickly left camp a few moments beforehand. The brown she-cat was highly suspicious of her, and despite Mantismoon’s apparent friendship with Flashsun, Redwood decided to stalk after Flashsun. She knew she couldn’t trust a single thing the tortoiseshell stood for, and if that meant distrusting Mantismoon, Redwood was fine with that. Any supporter of Flashsun was an enemy of Redwood’s. Redwood’s pace slowed as she realized she could scent another cat. Redwood bristled slightly as she recognized the scent as Cedarshade’s. Another traitorous cat? She hissed softly to herself. Flashsun had stopped and began to talk with Cedarshade, “I’m scared. I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me, Cedarshade. You’ve helped me a lot, but I don’t know if I could ever repay you. The rest of the clan treats me as a disease or something that they have to avoid, but you’re different. You see the world not from their views, but from someone who can understand what I’ve been through.” Cedarshade nodded along, and rested her tail across Flashsun’s shoulder in a friendly gesture, “You can always trust me, Flashsun.”
She retracted her tail, her tone growing a bit more somber, “I just wish others could understand. Sure, you did bad things, but your mother manipulated you, and you learned the hard way what you did when you lost everything and everyone.” Flashsun stiffened, but nodded. Cedarshade gave a soft smile and padded off, towards camp, Redwood figured. Flashsun nodded, and before Redwood could confront her, she saw a shape appear behind Flashsun. Redwood felt the blood in her veins freeze. It was Duostar, and she leapt at Flashsun. Flashsun screeched as Duostar pummeled her to the ground. Redwood dashed out and tackled Duostar to the ground, easily overpowering her mother. Flashsun was bleeding from a torn lip and a wound across her foreleg, and she looked in horror as Duostar bit Redwood’s neck. “Run! Get help!” Redwood managed to scream, before throwing Duostar off. Flashsun noticed sickeningly that while Redwood had managed to throw Duostar off of her, Duostar still had Redwood’s neck fur in her jaw, and with Redwood throwing her off, managed to tear her throat. Flashsun raced away towards camp. Cedarshade stopped her, coming from the direction of camp, “I heard screams and I-” Flashsun ran away. She had to get help. She barged into camp, alerting Mikey and Pouncewheat, who were standing guard, “Get help! Redwood! Duostar attacked Redwood!” She panted. Cockroachstar rushed out and barked at his Earl, “Tsunamibite, grab Knights, Duostar is back!” Tsunamibite nodded and began to assemble a patrol as quickly as he could. Cedarshade managed to make it back to camp, and was trying to calm Flashsun down, but the tortoiseshell looked horrified. Hollystar raced out of the Healer’s Den, with Swanpaw right behind her. Crowcall dashed towards her, “Stay here, Hollystar!” Crowcall yelped. Hollystar looked worriedly around camp, but Swanpaw and Crowcall nudged her back into the den.Tsunamibite had gathered Lavapool, Hiraethsight, Duckleap, and Salamanderflame, and Cockroachstar joined them. The 6 cats rushed out of camp, and Flashsun, despite her terror and wounds. Managed to run after them, desperate to see how Redwood was managing. As they rushed nearer to the location, the screams got louder, and Flashsun was terrified to see what was happening.
Redwood’s brown fur was covered with glistening red blood. Duostar was heaving, and Flashsun noticed she was bleeding heavily from a stomach wound. Duostar looked quickly at the arriving patrol, and Flashsun saw an emotion she never thought she would see in her mother’s eyes- fear. Genuine fear. The tyrant scoffed at the patrol, the fear in her eyes immediately evaporating, “Do you really think that you can defeat me? You bringing so many cats proves you don’t think you can kill me. Let’s analyze these cats, Shall we? Tsunamibite and Salamanderflame, you too are much too worried about each other to try and fight me, since your mind is too busy thinking about your mate, Lavapool doesn’t have the heart to kill a single cat because she doesn’t want her niece and nephew to regard her as a killer, Hiraethsight has heard stories of me, and is terrified- he doesn’t want to die, Duckleap doesn’t want to die either, but because he wants to live long enough to see his kits in another clan live happily, and Cockroachstar is practically shaking in his fur! He is too scared for his daughter, and while he does want vengeance, he knows what I can do to those closest to him.” The entire patrol was stunned, and Flashsun yelped as she felt Duostar’s eyes lock with hers, “My dear daughter, you’re just too scared to attack me! You saw what I did to your brother and father, and you fear death.” Flashsun stood her ground, and hissed, “You may have been right about the others, but you’re wrong about me. I am ready to die, Duostar. I’m not scared of death, and I never have been.” With her final words, Flashsun lunged at Duostar, teeth bared and claws outstretched. Duostar snarled and Flashsun was able to grasp onto her back, her claws digging into her shoulder blades. Duostar thrashed around wildly, attempting to buck her daughter off of her, but Flashsun held on, her claws drawing blood. Duostar managed to unhook one of Flashsun’s paws, and slammed her against a tree trunk, managing to unhook Flashsun fully from her pelt, and letting her slide down the tree, Flashsun’s blood from her sustained wounds dripping down the bark as she slid down. Duostar looked at Flashsun’s body coldly and flicked her tail, before facing the rest of the patrol. Hiraethsight whimpered slightly. Duostar laughed, “All of you are so pathetic!” She rushed over to Redwood, who was still struggling to stand on her own four paws, and grasped the back of her neck with her jaws, and with a final glare at the patrol, who were too shocked to do anything in such a short amount of time, bit down on Redwood’s neck, which emitted a sickening crunch. Duostar had killed another one of her children, neither time did she ever feel an ounce of remorse. Cockroachstar snarled and rushed at Duostar, but she quickly sidestepped and Cockroachstar tripped over Redwood’s body. Duostar snickered at all of them, “I will destroy all of you, one by one, until none of you are left alive.” Tsunamibite stared in horror as Duostar looked at the rest of the patrol, blood dripping from her jaw. Before the tortoiseshell could make another move, he noticed a figure get up behind her. The figure was completely coated in an inky darkness, due to the moon being shrouded with clouds. The only thing Tsunamibite could make out was two golden eyes as they leapt towards Duostar. The clouds covering the moon dispersed, and the patrol could see Flashsun, one paw on her mother’s neck, snarling down at her. Duostar was splayed on the ground, and Flashsun could feel her mother’s heart beating under the layers of skin and tissue. “Well, look at you now. You really take after me- a murderer of one’s own family. Kill me and live with the fact you now have blood on your paws. I won’t mind, but I’m sure your conscience will.” Flashsun looked horrified, and drew her paw away from her mother. Duostar got up and shook out her pelt. Flashsun snarled, “Leave this clan alone, Duostar. If you try to interfere with any of us again, you will die, by my own paws.” Duostar sighed, “The fun is over, I suppose. I did as much as I could to ruin your clan, but I suppose everything good must end. Farewell, Tundraclan! May I meet you again, and may you not meet me again.” She gave out one last laugh, one that chilled Flashsun’s bones to their marrow, and vanished.
Cockroachstar and Salamanderflame were carrying Redwood’s body, and Falcon let out a yowl of grief and distress when he saw his daughter’s body. It was all a blur. Cockroachstar telling Hollystar what had happened, Cedarshade trying to calm Flashsun down, Hollystar thanking Flashsun for her involvement. It was all a blur, and it overwhelmed Flashsun, till she couldn’t feel her paws, only the throbbing of the wound she had hidden from the others on her stomach, and with one last breath, she collapsed in the middle of camp. Cedarshade yowled, and Wisteriaflight immediately began to drag her body to the Healer’s den, with Cedarshade helping. Mantismoon was still in her nest, having yet to have woken up. They gently laid Flashsun within a nest, and Wisteriaflight turned her over onto her stomach, and his eyes widened as he saw the large, deep claw marks crisscrossing her stomach, dried blood crusting around the edges. Swanpaw looked worriedly, “How did no one notice?” he murmured. Wisteriaflight sighed, “I imagine she hid it well, and I imagine she didn’t want help.” he whispered.
Flashsun’s eyes opened. Was she still alive? Flashsun hissed. Why didn’t they let her die? Hollystar was curled around Mantismoon’s body, but looked at Flashsun after she flicked her ears, “Oh, good! You’re awake. Everyone is dying to see you, especially Cedarshade-”Flashsun hissed, cutting her off, “Why didn’t you let me die!? Me dying would do this entire clan a favor,” She buried her head beneath her paws, “I don’t fear death. Just let me die.” Hollystar sighed and rose to her paws, “You may have made bad decisions in the past, but you redeemed yourself. Do I wish you would’ve killed Duostar? A part of me does, but another part respects your decision to not kill kin. Thank you, Flashsun, for what you have done these past few days.” Without another word, Hollystar left the den.
