Sonya danced happily down the streets, the sack on her shoulder filled with halloween candy. Plus, today was the only day of the year that she could be out and around in public. It was her favorite time of the year but it was always over far too soon.

"Hey kid! That's an amazing costume you've got, any tips so that I can have teeth like that?" She studied the boy who was suddenly standing next to her, she could easily say the same for him. If it wasn't halloween she might have believed that he really did have a cat's tail.

"Thanks, but that's a secret... Unless of course you tell me how you did your own costume." She said with a smirk.

The boy suddenly looked down at his tail and then back to her teeth, "Uh, sure. But only if you go first." He said with a nervous smile.

Sonya's smile disappeared, "No, you go should go first." She said, taking a step back.

"I asked first!" The boy protested in suprise.

Sonya sighed, "I can't tell you how my teeth are like this." She said sadly.

The boy frowned, "And I can't tell you how my tail is like this." he said, and with that they parted ways. The girl going to the right while he walked to the left, they never expected that they would see each other again.

The little girl walked cautiously into the class room, the first day of school, the first day of fourth grade. It didn't take a genius to realize how much she hated school, especially when they had a full year ahead of them. The normal children wispered as she took a seat in the corner, she softly bit her lip at the reminder of how diffrent she was.

The seats slowly began to fill up and she shut her eyes tightly as the wispers seemed to get louder, she could even hear her name from time to time. The chair to her right squeaked and she opened her eyes in suprise, there were fourty chairs and thiry five students, she hadn't expected anyone to be near her.

"Hey, you're that girl from halloween last year! Why are you still wearing those teeth?" The boy asked, suprise and curiosity lacing through his voice.

Sonya looked down at the floor, "It's not a costume." She said quietly before noticing the tail that the boy had. The thing flicked to the side and she stared at the boy with wide brown eyes.

"It's not? Good, becuase you won't freak out that my costume was real too." He said, smiling slightly at the little girl's expression.

"So that's why you wouldn't tell me!"

"Yeah, want to be friends? I hear that the teasing will only get tougher as you grow, we should both have someone to defend us." He offered and watched as the girl nodded, a smile appearing on the little girl's face.

"You came from murky circumstances. We're still not really sure of your origins. But you're part of our family, still. Mom and dad love you just as much as they love me. I may be their blood but blood isn't all that matters. Don't be so skittish and unsure of yourself. There's nothing to be wary of around here."

He was so young when they took him in, only a child no older than 6. She was only 8. But he fit in perfectly and their family finally felt complete. They grew up together, Hai & Kisuke, as brother and sister...almost. Nothing is every as simple as that. For every black and white, there is a gray. And they were about to discover that gray, as time went on. 'Their' parents knew it was inevitable. Childhood innocence can only last so long.

As they played together as siblings through the years, they never lost their familial love for each other. Hai & Kisuke were closer than blood. Their friends could all see it. Akata snickered and made a bet. Rio cocked his head curiously. Inari smirked behind their backs, like she knew something no one else did. Ichibi smiled sweetly and wondered how long it'd really drag on like this.

Nobody stays young forever. And at ages 22 and 20, things began to change. The others noticed it but chose not to say anything. They'd agreed to let things play out without interference.

"Do you ever wonder what it'd be like if we never met?" She sat upon a tree branch with her back against the trunk, arms folded behind her head and eyes focused skyward.

"Sometimes, why?" He leaned, sitting on the ground below, against the tree. Casting a curious glance up at her, Kisuke was intrigued.

"I cannot even fathom it. I'd be lost without you. We've know each other for way too long." Her eyes shifted with her head and her gaze caught his. She seemed like she had serious words for him. "Kisuke?"

"Yeah, Hai?" He didn't know what was coming. All he could do was sit and listen. She hopped down beside him and he stood up to his full height, now towering over her. 6'2 to 5'7.

"I love you." She firmly spoke, fearless. Hai had never been the shy type like Kisuke. She'd always preferred to be blunt when serious matters were at hand. Kisuke knew she didn't mean 'love' as in familial. No, when Hai was this astute, it went beyond family affections. The girl he'd known as his sister for so long had feelings for him.

I love you too, Hai." This time he was unafraid. His feelings for her were genuine and certainly did not feel like the familial type. Hai got up on her tiptoes and kissed him. He returned it without hesitation.

Akata groaned and handed a $5 over to Inari. The older girl simply gave a foxy grin and chuckled. "See, I told you." Inari shook his head good-naturedly at his friend and Rio stifled a laugh. Fate really had its way of surprising everyone. Hai & Kisuke weren't meant to be brother and sister. They never were.

A Predator and its Prey

The dragon stretched her powerful wings, her red scales bright beneath the sun. Ancient and tired, Jimena laid her neck out to bask in the light, with her tail curved around her. Her eyes closed for peaceful rest, her legs folded comfortably beneath her. There was a slight pinch against her neck, but all in all, today seemed perfect. That is, until she realized what exactly that small "pinch" was.

"Grr, you are mine red dinosaur!" a muffled growl sounded, "Feel my wraith! Haha!"

Dinosaur? What an absurd notion! Dinosaurs had been extinct for many millennia! While old, Jimena was no dinosaur. She lifted her head to see who could possible think of such a thing, only to find an odd little dog. It was a gentle brown, its soft coat suggesting it was still but a pup. It growled and pawed at Jimena, its fangs in her neck. The bite didn’t hurt, but it still was a bit strange.

“. . . What are you doing child?”
“I shall slay you dinosaur!”
“. . . I’m a dragon.”

The corgi stopped for a moment, silently pulling its fangs from the dragon’s neck. Deep chocolate eyes flickered towards calm and intensive yellow orbs, and immediately the pup’s ears bent submissively and its head tilted sheepishly.

“Hahaha. . . Grr?”

A swirl of perfume, a gentle brush of hands, a knowing smirk, and she was gone.

His feet pounded down the cobblestones, his breath puffing hotly in the air before him. Clutched in one sweaty hand was a slippery coldness; in the other, a crumpled, perfume-kissed note. The rain cascaded over him, slicking his hair to his forehead. A glance, quickly thrown behind him, revealed two dark shapes in close pursuit. He poured on his last burst of speed, feeling the puddles suck at his boots as he splashed through them. His arms pumped at his sides, and he gradually felt his fist loosen.
As he rounded the corner, passing through the light pooling under the streetlamp, he felt his hand open, seemingly of its own accord, and watched in horror as a gleaming flash of silver flew to the ground. It hit the ground with a clatter and was instantly swept into the river flowing through the gutter. He stood, rooted to the spot by shock and terror, and watched it disappear into the murky depths of the storm drain.
He bowed his head and unfolded the note, heedless of the water spilling down from the dark sky above. His eyes traced her words again, feeling the weight of defeat pressing upon him.

The key to her heart- gone. All is lost.
