i feel like a lot of people are shoving them into NFT groups. nobody is willing to trade them,,

I think a lot of people just didn't get extras of the rat litter from the event... well, because they were rats.
This makes them rarer to trade for now, imo, because the people that got them from trade in (or traded for them during the event) just traded tokens or other event pets for one of each outcome for their collection. Once they collected all the rats, they used their extra tokens for other pets, since "rats have bad demand", and they thought the other pets would be better fodder. That's just my thoughts on it...

^ this perfectly describes what I did back then.
I got four robo rats from that trade in, 2x light blue, 1x dark blue, 1x green and stopped using that trade-in once I got those outcomes. Swapped one light blue for the blue/gold outcome to complete the set.
Back then I didn't have many extra tokens, so I only used them to complete my own collection and a few minihoards.

Chiming in here to note that I actually did a lot of trade-ins for this litter during the event, because I hoarded the starry cats from the same trade-in.
In total, I traded in 38 times.

I got:
5 x blue-gold robo rat
14 x blue robo rat
4 x starry PPS cat
7 x "Z" starry adult cat
8 x starry adult cat

I received no green robot rats at all.

It was done on 2020-04-26. Initially I offered the dogs for just the rat, the rat's owner added the red dogs to their end because they felt I was overpaying and preferred this.

i thought my current green robot rat i have was one i traded tokens for. apparently its not... however this trade shows my token exchange for a different green robot rat. i got it first try and the blue robot rat second try. at some point i swapped the green robot rat during the event because who wants an unknown rarity rat anyways, right? heres my unfortunate event swap.

almost immediately after the rat's rarities were released i frantically found someone willing to trade their rat. here is the trade. I made that trade back in 2016 immediately after the event.

Blue: 3
Blue/gold: 5
Green: 3

It's in this moment that I realized I just accidentally lumped together my blue + blue+dark blue rats under one counter because I forgot they're two outcomes LOL

I traded tokens in 13 times, 4 of them were cats, 9 were rats. Out of those rats 2 were the green one. Looks like I got lucky back then, lol.

I still have one of them in my collection, the other one sat in my trading group for 4 years until I traded it away for 36 C$ in September 2020. Trade here. It may be a very rare rat, but it's still.. Just a rat.

The likelihood is that it is only just rare enough to place within the very rare bracket (hence why it has never been rereleased).

It has been rereleased though, I got one in December 2018! Unless I'm misunderstanding?

But it was also a pretty big trade so figuring out value was kinda a big ol' guess (and the rat had been gifted to me in the first place so I didn't really mind if the trade was imbalanced). I hear a lot of people say that the rat is probably more rare than most VRs off the list because it was VR from the start. Is this necessarily true? I feel like just because it was VR from the start doesn't necessarily mean anything. Could be as many of it in the game as the average VR or it could, in fact, be as rare as people hope it is.

Nah you're right! Being VR from the start doesn't necessarily mean that a pet is a "high-end" very rare. As a matter of fact, pets like this rat, which never changed rarity so far at all, can be kind of annoying to evaluate because they started off this way, haha.
Basically, one of the best ways we currently have of figuring out pets' rarities compared to others with the same tag is to check when their rarities changed.

Say you have two outcomes from one litter that both start out uncommon, but one of them turns rare after one year, the other after two years. We can now say with relative confidence that the first one is the rarer of the two.
Now, you can do this not only for pets of one litter, but across all years. A 2013 pet and a 2009 pet that turn rare to very rare on the same update are likely equally rare, but a 2013 pet that turns VR before a 2009 rare is a bit rarer.

The rat has never changed rarity, so we don't actually have any useful way of comparing how it holds up compared to other VRs. It could be a low-end very rare, it could sit comfortably in the middle, we just don't know.
At most, we can say that since we have never yet seen it move up or down in rarity, it probably isn't just barely on the edge of its rarity.
(There are some pets that have been notoriously "unstable" rarity-wise; the Mountain Zebra for example frequently switched between OMGSR and VR.)

But yeah basically? The only thing we really can extrapolate from the rat's ongoing VR tag so far is that it's not likely to be "just barely" a VR.
