- the mouthed response from auggie was enough to settle some of the anxious flame, and though reese appeared to be baffled about the whole debacle, he offered a five minutes in silent reply. he would grab astoria and give a little introduction and then the entire issue of the underworld would be wrapped up in a neat little bow. onwards and upwards.
that was what he hoped, at least. that was what he really wanted to happen. it seemed so simple that it was almost doomed to fail.
regardless of his unsettling amounts of doubt, he rapped his knuckle against the door of the thanatos cabin once it was within hand distance. “crow?” he spoke to the wooden slab. “s’orin. obviously. it’s breakfast, i thought… i mean, do you want anything? i could get you something if you don’t fancy coming out. i thought you could meet some people. say hello. if you wanted.” the reply came in form of silence. was that a no? “crow?” asleep, maybe. “i’m gonna open the door. if - if you want me to stay out, just sort of… shout something.” no such complaint came. his hand rested on the handle, and he felt the dread before he understood its reasoning. a prophecy of what he was to see inside:
nothing. well, not nothing. the harrington was crumpled on the bed, the only evidence she had been there in the first place. maybe that wasn’t evidence at all.
“astoria?” he asked the thin air, checking each corner for hiding places that didn’t exist. orin even went as far as to check under the beds, but came up with nothing. he wasn't sure if he was more panicked or confused. “crow, this isn’t funny, don’t - if you’re - you got me, you can come out now.” a bit of him still hoping that it was a joke, that she’d jump out from the shadows and scare the fear of the gods back into him, but as her arrival lagged with each passing second, it became more and more clear that she was missing.
”i suppose you won’t be needing me anymore,”
”i won’t be able to face it on my own,”
maybe she'd just gone for a walk. maybe she was hiding in the dark and waiting for the right moment to pop out. he sat on the bed, pulled the jacket onto his lap, and -
waiting again? the thought made him feel interminably ill. astoria was gone. she had made her exit. fine. he wasn't going to kick or scream or shout. it was fine. onwards and upwards.
orin put his jacket back on, tried to ignore that it didn't feel quite as right as it used to, and exited the thanatos cabin, shutting the door behind him.

- "people who don't want to talk are the ones who need to talk," conan pointed out, a turn of phrase that had been spouted by the twins' late mother. a brief nod at the thanks, a smile at the awkwardness of the pat. a thought: "here, if he won't talk about it, aldi's better at picking stuff up than i am. shake of a hand and he'll know it all."
"what?" aldous appeared surprised to have been mentioned again.
"i'm singing your praises, apache. d'you wanna do your magic?" a glance back at emmie. "if that's... you know, if that's something you think would help. can't hide it then, can he?"
everyone at the camp seemed incessant on dropping as many names that conan was not familiar with as possible, and reese was one to add to the roster of strangers. "maybe," plants were definitely something that he was more familiar with. "nah, i'd be a... i'd be a cheese plant. they taste nothing like cheese, by the way. don't let the name fool you." the question about his ego was a good one. he didn't think so. "no, my ego's just fine. being here's just proved how much better we are at everything." his tone was completely serious, but a grin cracked the facade. "no, i'm kidding. it's alright. it's just different, is all. weird to get used to. glad to have such a good guide."

- a high pitched trill emanated from clive's throat. “ohh, i'm in trouble!" he chirped. if the intent of the snippy remark was intimidation, it hadn't worked. “i've been talking this language for far longer than you 'ave. i think i'm the authority on this matter, thank you very much. slurred. i've never 'eard the like. talking about slurred when we got shakin' stevens over 'ere."
"mochyn cachu dynol," teilo muttered, only half-listening.
“'uman what?"
a stare was shared between the two of them. clive, clearly, had no idea why the contest had started, but was willing to hold out until he won. something had happened there. something strange had occurred, and teilo wasn't sure that he boasted enough mental cohesion to point it out. maybe he'd said something else. it wouldn't have been the first time. the conversation shifted before he got the chance to interrogate it.
"audra," he said, though little else stood out to him. "s'that way," a vague wave in the direction they had come from, which was entirely unhelpful. "y'can come back with us if we finish this alive. if not, there'll be no point in it, will there? we'll all be dead. there'll be no worry about fades and what-have-you."
a revelation about kingston. apparently. held off on, it seemed. "right, and are you gonna elaborate on that, or do you fancy a drumroll? why does nobody just say things? why do people have to announce that they've got news? it's like you're asking to get interrupted just say what -" a tap from clive.
“when he's stressed he likes to insult dead people. i've learnt that about him," smoothing over the blunder. and, as if teilo had the power of prophecy, a new face appeared through the windshield, pointed at him, said something in a demanding fashion. “d'you know her?"
"not a clue,"
“right. i'll sort it. you figure out this hull business." he made to step through the inner wall of the van, seemingly forgetting that he was corporeal, and simply slammed his face into the window. “door." and then it was opened, and clive was out to have a shout.

- after a brief blunder, clive was ready to do what he did best: ramble aimlessly in a vaguely aggressive fashion. the best course of action was to disorient the enemy, he found, and he had decided that rochelle was, as a matter of fact, the enemy. with borrowed emrys in hand, he could even venture to do what he had promised to do to teilo the night before and take this stranger's damned chin off for daring to interrupt their van time.
“listen, you!" he said, pointing an accusing finger at her as he slammed the door shut. “i don't know who you think you are. could be the queen of bloody shih-tzu for all i care, but you don't come in 'ere all lar-di-dar with your negative energies and start demanding things off my boy. he doesn't even know who you are! to think, the cheek on that. so go on, looby loo, start spewing about whatever the 'ell it is you want, or sod back to whatever 'ole you came from! i won't tell you again! i've got a watch that somehow turns into a very large and very intimidating weapon of war. if you come any closer to that van, i am going to have to figure out 'ow exactly it is you use it. and you don't want that, let me tell you." he rambled with just enough punch to make the threat palpable. “who are you, what do you want, and why do you think it's appropriate to barge in on what is clearly a sensitive moment? i mean, i'd say you must've born in a barn, but even jesus 'ad manners. shame on you. yeah. you should be ashamed. it's shocking, what you've just done. i can barely stand to look at you, i'm that peeved. best be something important."
