that largely depends on how your cat gets along with other animals. i personally
would try another cat (especially since there are so many cats & kittens up for
adoption currently) but you could also try a younger dog that is able to be socialized
with cats or an older dog who behaves well with cats. i would personally stay away
from smaller "prey" animals, as instinct can kick in even when you least expect it.

no matter which pet you choose, i would recommend looking up the best ways to
introduce your cat to new animals. when my mom & i brought home another cat to
our two, we had to keep them in separate rooms for a week before letting them
see each other face-to-face. during that time, we would feed the cats with their bowls
on either side of the door to get them used to each other's scents. it took a couple
rounds of hissing for them to be comfortable but now they're all good with each other c:[/size]

Rexu gets along super well with anything really, anytime someone would bring over their animal he got comfortable with them fairly quickly. He's a gentle and social cat that hasn't really had a problem with people or other animals before.

We were actually leaning towards getting another cat, but are pretty worried about if the new cat will dislike or try to dominante Rexu. We or I specifically feel like the personality of an older dog or a more laid back dog would fit better with him instead of another cat, since cats, especially ones who don't know each other well, tend to be very aggressive towards each other.

Though that being said we are no cat behavior experts or anything, I just don't want our baby getting bullied by another cat.

Adding something on here, we are especially worried about another cat, because Rexu's interaction with them seems way more tense then with any other animal we've introduced him to. He's fought with other cats before and that's not something we want to willingly put him into.

It is very hard to know how a cat will react to a new permanent companion (as opposed to a guest), as well as to predict what their relationship will look like. I'd say your safest bet would be to start with a kitten/puppy, but even then there's no guarantee that the younger animal won't end up more dominant - it just happens. Cats have relationships just like humans do, and they will need to build a bond and resolve any issues that might arise between them, just like a person would. Starting with a young animal would make it less likely for your cat to be bullied simply due to size and maturity, however there is no way to predict the temperament the new animal will grow into. Whereas starting with an older animal means you can be aware of their temperament, but you still can't predict what their interactions will look like. There really isn't a perfect answer when it comes to these things, at the end of the day in both versions the two animals will have to learn to coexist under new rules.

from personal experience, cats do seem to set up a sort of hierarchy once in
groups, so there could be some additional issues at first when introducing two
new ones. you could always try to avoid this by introducing a kitten or younger
cat, as it would be able to grow up with Rexu and know that he is its senior hopefully.

even after being good with each other for a good few years now, my two cats
that are brothers prefer to be super close with each other rather than our other
cat (we compensate by allowing that cat in rooms the brothers aren't allowed in).
sometimes my largest cat will get into fights with the one we had brought home,
but this doesn't happen often and is easy to split up (and never gets overtly violent,
no one ever bleeds, just some tufts of fur might get pulled out)

i think senior dogs could always be a good option, and then you're also giving a
home to a dog who may have had an unfortunate life! i know that some adoption
agencies will allow pets to have a sort of meet-n-greet opportunity to see if
they get along but i honestly am not sure if that applies to dog-to-cat interactions.

@Thalassic, @darling feathers

First off, thank you for your feedback in the situation, I greatly appreciate it! Second off, I think going the kitten route would be best for if we decide to give him a cat friend. The idea that Rexu being like the papa of a kitten is an adorable image in my head, and I feel like he'd do great at the role. An adopted kid if you will.

Another thing I want to ask about is if a female cat/dog/animal is better/more able to get along then a male cat/dog/animal. I ask this because I know with cats, males sometimes will fight for dominance over territory and such, and am curious if that is less likely with a female? From experience I have no idea, because most of the animals that pay Rexu a visit are indeed males, and he's fought with male cats before.

for cats, it could be helpful to get a female, but it all depends on both cats'
personalities! all of my cats are males, but they all generally have laidback
personalities & the cat we introduced cares more about people than other
      animals.

for dogs, i don't really think it would matter as much. my dog isn't a part of the
cats' hierarchy in my house. she just does her own thing & all of the cats just
adore her (she thinks they're annoying & take up all of her beds haha). she can
just kind of use her size to move the cats if she needs, so they've never gotten
in a fight with her or vice versa.

it's honestly just going to be different for every situation based on how the new
animal is introduced to Rexu & what that other animal's behavior/personality is like.

Alright, thank you for the feedback and help! For now we're just going to have to decide if we are interested in getting a kitten friend or senior dog friend, who knows, we might end up doing both.

Side note- I'd love to give an animal a home that has been up for adoption for a while, because I know some pets for one reason or another don't get adopted even after years of being there. That's exactly how we picked out Rexu as well, for him it was cryptosporidium, and because of that he was often looked over by adopters.

Tigger is my cat but lives with my mom (I moved out and my boyfriends cat and tigger didn’t get along, tiggy is also 13 years old now, lunar gets along with Sage as there both active and playful while tiggy just wants sleep)

Anywho, this is tigger at about 2-3 months old

Sage;

Judging by her size, do you think she’s around 2-3 months as well or older?

This is my fat old man now

It's difficult to tell from that angle/pose, but I'd guess older, maybe around 3-6. Young kittens really tend to be smaller than you'd expect, and she doesn't look like a 2 month old to me.

we are fostering a older cat called fred he's around 2 years old now I believe? anyway we rescued some kittens (2) off the street with no intention to keep them but we've fallen in love with them and have to decided to keep them, but our foster cat hates them. If we have him off the leash in the same room as them he'll end up attacking them. The kittens don't understand and think he's playing and just torment him, they play with his leash, his tail etc and that just triggers him. we have to keep him in the bedroom and he hates that, and then we have to keep the kittens in the other bedroom so he can come out and THEY hate that
is there a solution or can we just not foster him anymore
